I felt empty after watching this movie. I literally felt robbed of my time. Those are 2 hours of my life wasted. I wasn't even entertained. I think the movie grabs your attention in the first 15 minutes, and then the sunk cost fallacy kicks in, and you're in it until the end. Hoping that you will be rewarded for sticking with it until the end. But you won't be.

I left a review for my friends on FB that read
"I've taken a whole day to digest and think about, Leave The World Behind the movie on Netflix.
Conclusion, it is 2 hours and 21 minutes of my life that I will NEVER get back.
The movie is agonizingly slow, plodding from one useless and unbelievable point to another.
I don't know which character was the worst, Julia Roberts' always angry woman or the Myha'la Herrold's overty racist character. Ethan Hawk's completely spinless character. Kevin Bacon will probably go into hiding after accepting a part in this movie and is only in the movie because the son (a total dick)... SPOILER, had his teeth "fall" out (this was a gnarly scene). Mahershala Ali who finally gets to play a good guy was the only character who wasn't totally annoying.
There was no rhyme or reason, point or even a specific direction this film followed.
Julia Roberts may not have damaged her career image but it sure wasn't helped by this film... screaming at deer... really.
The only one who got a "happy ending" was the otherwise forgettable character, the daughter, Rosie.
I would say if you have a choice between watching this movie and a root canal, hit up your dentist, now."

I feel like everyone has missed the point of this ending. Or are choosing to ignore it. Makes me feel like this guy didn't even watch the movie and copied someone else's review. The characters aren't supposed to be likable. I feel like that's obvious and intentional. The acting was very high grade for an apocalyptic type of movie. The setting felt very immersive. Its dreadully realistic. The dialogue wasn't corny, all the writing was fantastic. It takes place within the Mr. Robot universe. Everything that's happening makes a lot of sense and how it's connected. I haven't read a criticism of this film that was valid. They are just stupid

the message of the whole film is consumerism has overtaken us, we care more about our phones and entertainment than the real world and the well-being of our families. At the end, we become Rose, desperate to watch the last episode instead of focusing on the outside world. Rose read the alert message saying that there radiation in the air, get to shelter. But once she seen the dvd's, she completely forgot about saving her family from exposure. It's devastating watching her sit there with a smile on her face when everyone else is dying.
The director knew exactly what he was doing. Genius film.

    • @DavidFinni
      @DavidFinni 9 месяцев назад

Maybe deep down.. that message is rubbing people the wrong way. People want to ignore that thats how our culture is. That what Rose did is inside the viewer also. So many remakes and sequels these days.. I love how this movie made you think. A lot of questions with few answers, but that's what's great about it. I'm glad the rotten tomatoes score is going up at least on the critic front, at 75 now. I first saw it around 55 percent or so on there, and I was so confused. I expected much higher. The audience score however, is currently lower than some of the worst netflix originals.. maybe people don't appreciate good acting? Obviously a decent amount of people just don't get it, I didn't get the Barbie movie so each their own.@@marklawd91

Nothing is happening, it’s about paranoia and how each character (and people in general) react to being suddenly cut off from media/ communication and faced with what we can assume is the collapse of American society. I just finished the movie and aside from blowing out my speakers from that F-king terrible noise, I thought it was thought provoking and eerie in a “how safe are we really?” kind of way.

I've watched this movie yesterday. In the first 20 minutes I was hoping everyone would die a painfull death. I can't recall characters more anoying than those in this f'ing movie!
My partner is autistic and we believe that the girl obssessed with Friends was supposed to be autistic too. She heard the sirens before anyone else (sensory acuity) had an hyperfocused personality (Friends, dears, the ship...) and she had what we call the "Hollywood autistic stare", the only way movies know how to imply autism without saying. And she survives because of her quirks (wich is another obvious trope in those movies).

What is there really to spoil? Very little actually happens because unless there's some sort of giant transport vehicle moving at high velocity toward someone or deer crowding around people, almost nothing actually happens in this movie. The moment when George and that annoying racist chick (honestly it's an accurate description of both women in this movie) show up presented some genuine suspense because nobody has any idea who each other are, but beyond that first night, there isn't really that much natural tension that isn't contrived even though the situation itself is a perfect source of drama all on its own. Most of the suspense for a huge chunk in the middle of the movie comes entirely from the music playing than from anything that's actually happening on screen. It's never a good sign when you find yourself more interested in what was going on off screen than what's happening right in front of you.

In elementary school writing we learn “show not tell”, which means your story should show what it intends to be about through action, dialogue, setting, etc, instead of explicitly saying it. This movie clearly didn’t get the memo that your viewer should be able to take away the theme and lesson without a main character having to wrap it all up in the end with “information he knew about but didn’t want to share in case he was wrong”.
There was nothing deep about this movie. It was incredibly surface level in every single way. It is infuriating that this is considered top-notch these days. The public deserves better.

    • @surfjax23
      @surfjax23 9 месяцев назад +7

I’ve seen a lot of comments talking about how “deep” this movie is and how it “really makes you think” so it’s very sobering to see others with the same opinion. I didn’t find any depth at all in the film. It’s disappointing since the premise of the movie leaves room for so much to work with but the execution was awful. The deep topics people bring up are extremely basic like how it shows everyone is too reliant on technology. Okay? What other movies are people watching if this is the bar for a thought provoking movie? It’s absurd.

The people claiming that the movie is "deep" are just outing themselves as shallow and ignorant (or they're lying for some reason). The concept would have been better as a series but the unlikeable characters make that basically impossible.

I really had to force myself to watch the whole thing, and I did make it to the end. But without any sense of satisfaction. Time spent watching a bad movie is not the same as time lost. It makes us appreciate more; the good movies. The final explanation was very shallow and way too speculative. The characters were not true even to themselves. Each person had a potential, but none were fully realized. The story elements left a lot of holes and open ends. Two big thumbs down.

Movie is horrible. Makes no sense. So technology fails and the world fall apart in a couple of days? Might I remind whoever wrote this that there are someone us alive when there were no cell phones, No GPS (I went to flight school in the 80s and the best we had were VOR stations). No G1000 displays, all steam gauges. Low end planes did not have auto pilots. Cars were all old school, no fancy electronics, distributor cap no on board computer. My Suzuki Samurai didn't come with a radio. I had to install one after market. I remember using something called a map for land navigation in the military and my wife always had the map and was the navigator. TV was analog with rabbit ears, no cable and we had NBC, CBS, ABC, WOR, WPIX and PBS (NYC). AM/FM analog radio of the air. No VHS, DVD. Everything was hard wired, no digital switching and nothing was connect to one another. TV were Black and white and worked on tubes. Then U turned them on they took a little while to heat up and come on. In college I used a manual typewriter to do my papers. No word processors. Research was done by going to the library and check out a thing called a book.
My point is we lived in the 60s and 70s without the technology we have today and still went about or daily lives. It is so stupid to think that in a few decades we have become so dependent on technology that if it failed the would would instantly fall apart. And FYI, even on newer fancy airplanes with all the G1000 modern glass cockpits, U still have old traditional steam gauges as backup in a emergence. If my autopilot started to misbehave, I would simple pull the mechanical circuit breaker and shutdown the autopilot or any other computer system. If U want a movie on what happens on an aircraft when the world goes to crap, I highly recommend Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks. A 100% better movie and a true story. Kevin Bacon is in that one also. Don't waste ur time with Leave the Wold Behind. A waste of some very talented actors. I am a fan of all of them. Only reason I tuned in.

Encouraged understanding and made parts of the world that were deserted and forgotten about accessible. It has provided medicine, food, water and sustainable solutions for these necessities to parts of the world where people died of hunger, lack of medicine, and drinking water. THANK YOU! (8 minutes in now) I was trying to remember what specific movie this reminded me of last night. It was Twister. I was thinking that maybe Volcano, because of all the forced racism commentary, but it was Twister. Maybe a combination of the two.

Thank you for validating my thoughts. I was so frustrated, I felt like I did not get it.
It's like Netflix asked an AI to write a script not too good, not too bad, but just enough to keep people watching for 2+ hours, or just to see the train wreck.
If it wasn't for Julia Roberts I would have stopped the movie after 10 minutes. When I saw her looking at the camera, I immediately lowered my expectations, just maybe I can enjoy this.
    I was just stupid.
The stupid deer had no point. People flirting weirdly just to run the clock. Making stupid promises, not watching over their own kids just so that stupid things can happen.
Even Kevin Bacon, being a prepper, and after a lot of stupid dialog and time consuming tension, he just takes the money! What is he going to do with money?
After the movie ended I had to watch the first episode of The Last of Us just to forget about this bad movie.

Things to Google for this movie:
QR code and lake Shawnee amusement park
Scott v sandford ( the names of the families)
Fort Mose and Point Comfort (the hwy signs when they turn off to go to house)
The year 1619 (the radio station in the car)
White lion ship (the beached freighter)
They live next to the Huxley's referring to Aldos Huxley
At the end Rose finds safety in the house of the Thorns
Tons of Easter eggs and symbolism in this movie. It might make it more interesting for you.

I wouldn't even bother to watch it, and you say it stinks so for sure I wouldn't watch it. Julia Roberts is still hot as hell, but I am not going to watch a movie just for that. Forget it.

😂😂😂😂😂 you are so on point on all of these man so disappointing. All these movies focus on driving box office number by overhyping the trailers. Almost feels like the make trailers first then build non sensical movies around it. So annoyed by everyone who thinks this was a brilliant movie...ughh

Indeed-- even 1979's The China Syndrome from Columbia Pictures, w/Fonda, Douglas and Lemmon, was more than 25K times better, IMO.

After the end, I looked for a place to rant and warn others.
This movie reminded me of M Night Shamalan and suspenseful and kept expecting something, BUT NOTHING HAPPENS ITS RIDICULOUS. Also, they had to make sure to say some woke crap, "YOU CANT TRUST WHITE PEOPLE." Why throw that in your crappy movie? The ending was literally the daughter getting to see the last episode of Friends.

The only amazing thing about this film is the size of Julia Robert's nostrils. I'm not kidding......they're HUGE! I'm surprised they all didn't climb in for safety.

True. She still looks pretty damn good though. I liked her best in “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” She was sooo hot then.

Is this movie actually a cancelled series? Because that's the impression I get from it being divided into parts 1-5. It had good buildup, but no payoff/conclusion.

Yeah, I didn't care for this either. They were going for some racial metaphor and it was lost on me here as Hawke's character was nice the entire time and they do kind of imply (badly) that Robert's character might be a tad racist, but she gets over it so quick it really does not land. They clearly wanted this to be some racial metaphor about when crap hits the fan people get tribal again. Kevin Bacon's character is small as a prepper type of guy that actually has stuff the other's need, but even he does not refuse at first because of race as the boy sick is white and Hawke's character is there with Ali's character. They all seem to be just initially selfish and not racist, which I actually think is kind of prudent since they never tell anyone what is happening.
With the weird animal behavior, they really needed to tell people what was going on and who is doing it, but instead make the bad decision to not do that so it is a mystery. The kids behaviors just go no where. One loses teeth but never told why. The boy is obviously liking Ali's daughter but she is kind of reverse racist, but nothing happens in this subplot and it is dropped. The 13 year old likes Friends and um "?". In fact, Ali's character is also so nice and accommodating I just do not get what the story is here. It is like they wanted to do some deep message about getting along and not being tribal and hateful, but all the characters are so nice it does not line up at all.
It was like a bad M. Night movie with a bunch of interesting ideas at first that go no where at all because the characters do not seem to know what is happening and they all get over their distrust so quickly the event no longer matters as there are no stakes.
