This is cool. I need to study German, Spanish, Javanese, Japanese, and French. This is due to interests in philosophy, history, and philology, all of which I aim to do for graduate school in the future. This stuff makes sense to me because I wouldn’t have to subscribe to a service just to learn how to translate texts from the ground up. This is so helpful. I wish LingQ was free, especially since I’m from the Global South and a minimum wage job here would not be able to sustain online services that help me and my interests and hobbies. Happy to see LWT exists, happy to have come across this video.

Thanks for making the video. I've been using LWT on and off for a few years now and think it deserves more attention. The 'complicated' set up is no more difficult than following some basic instructions if locally hosting, although it may seem intimidating at first. The best advantage of LWT is it is very easy to mass make and export anki cards from your texts and terms. Cheers.

I have been using Learning with Texts for a long time. It has been a very effective tool for me. There are some cons that made me move on to another software however:
    - Homonyms : if there are multiple words in the language you are studying, that are spelled exactly the same way, you cannot save the 2 words with a separate meaning/translation.
    - Declensions/conjugations : when a verb is conjugated or when a noun/adjective is declined, its form is different to the root form of the noun/verb you have saved in LWT, so I had to edit the texts I was reading, to include the unconjugated verbs and undeclined nouns/adjectives next to their variation if I wanted to save only the root form and not the multiple variations of the exact same word separately. It took way more time.
    - Bad optimization and bugs : I have tried using it with multiple servers, both online and offline (xampp, wamp...) and everytime I noticed huge latencies, especially when the database was filled with many texts and words. I also had issues with database corruption, and issues when exporting/importing a backup of the database into LWT which made me lose a lot of progress at some point. I guess I had too many texts and the app can't handle that much.
    - all the words you did not save previously are marked as "unknown" when you add a new text. It pushes you to translate every single word to have no unknown (blue) words left, even if you can guess some word's meaning from context or if it's a word you already know but declined/conjugated, which is not necessary.
    - it's not pratical because of the whole local server part, and having it on an online server is not really useful for people who want to use it remotely with their phone for example, as the smartphone version of LWT doesn't work well.
As an alternative, I use Onenote. I have a notebook called "languages", with multiple categories (texts, books...) for each language I learn.
I just copy paste the text I want to read in a text box. then, I create another text box on the right from the text. I highlight the unknown words I need and write the translation on the side with it's root form. I can search the word in a search bar within the whole notebook and find example of usage in context immediately.
I no longer use spaced repetition apps as it doesn't really work for me and I find it pretty boring, and I don't have to learn by heart every single word I see, the ones I need stand out and I remember them in context, but if you write the unknown word and the translation in a single next box separated with a sign like ":", it's possible to copy paste to excel, split columns, remove potential duplicate values, and build a vocabulary list that way. It's also very easy to save/backup (by exporting to a .onepkg file). It can also be sync in realtime with the cloud, and you can use it on your phone.

This is extremely helpful, and I deeply appreciate the detail you kindly provide, especially about Excel lists. I have been thinking about Onenote over past few weeks as an alternative to Evernote, and I think this is my topping point. Many thanks.

I predict that the language learning community will grow more than ever, thanks to the abundance of resources, both free and paid. This growth is fueled by the increasing number of people choosing to learn a new language for work, study, or simply out of curiosity and interest-just like me! As more and more individuals embark on the language-learning journey, English and Spanish remain the most studied languages, with an insane amount of resources available.
Looking ahead, in the next year or even just a few months, essential AI and language models for natural language processing are expected to introduce more functionalities. These will be related to translation and may even allow users to switch the language to their own or the one they prefer.
      Best regards! Saludos!

after learning the fundamentals of the target language, you should force yourself to read an advanced book, only with the help of a dictionary or translation if you don't have any idea what that word might mean, or is the meaning is implied later in the sentence. in some point, your brain feels like it got constipated, that's when you understand it is working.
at least this is pretty much how i learned english. now i can listen or read something with little to no trouble.
but due to low practice of speaking and writing skills that comes with this method, you kinda only be able to receive information in that language, so if you're interested in reading books or poetry etc. in a foreign language, it's for you.

What a great video. 👍 Also, that's a really helpful tool.
I don't know if someone already mentioned it and this video is 2 months old already, but your audio isn't properly synced to your audio. That's an issue everyone faces, that's why there is the "cut!" and "action" board closing. There, you can then look up the audio spike from the snap and synce it to the board snapping visually.
You probably don't need that, just an anecdote of how some are trying to make the edit and processing of the files easier.
Probably, you could just look at your lip movements and gauge by that.
And it wasn't that bad either. So it's not something that has to be immediately fixed if you have other priorities.

Amazing video! Thank you for your efforts and for introducing this tool. I was looking for something similar so this came at the right time. Do you by any chance have a list of websites/sources that I can get texts from? My level is currently around B1. Much appreciated!

LingQ seems really good the first few chapters but when you take a look at some of the intermediate materials it's all very low quality, machine translated material. It's not curated or translated by a human and there are a lot of errors in there. I don't think it's worth the price at all

Seems really useful but probably requires a lot of effort at first. Shame a lot of my Japanese resources are not copy and paste friendly, but I'll try to look into it over the summer vacation with French and see how it goes. Thanks for sharing

I ran into a problem when I first used it recently, and it was that when I was using Linguee (for German), my computer (specifically the ip address) got blocked for having "requested" too much. If you run into this problem, it can be easily circumvented by a VPN. I used Windscribe VPN (Free) and it worked again.

That's great! I stopped using Linguee as a dictionary because of this problem. I'm gonna try using it with a VPN. Thanks!

Very usefull, anyway I wanted to ask you if there was the possibility to mark full sentence and not only the singol word.
And then Is it possible import a video and to have the relative transcript?

Hey, very nice video! Quick question:
Do I need to manually insert all texts there? How did you manage to enter the whole first chapter of The Hunger Games?

    • @is4ndroide
      @is4ndroide  Год назад +1

Yes, you have to add each text manually, so I just got a copy of the ebook and copied and pasted the text from the chapter.

excellent tutorial, a very useful tool, i'll definitely use it cause i cant afford LingQ.
i have a question, you see, i'm learning English and as you know, in English exist phrasal Verbs that they're compounded with two separated words, so, is there a way to highlight a sentence, phrasal verb, o more than just one separate word?.

for separable verbs, I usually just make a new term with the infinitive
