  • Join me for a few Peaceful Moments on a Bike & Barge Vacation in The Netherlands.
After a lunch stop in Bruinisse, the carried along towards today's destination of Zuirikzee. Along the way we made a stop at The Flood Museum in Ouwerkerk.
The museum commemorates the events of February 1st 1953 which were the deadly floods which took many lives. It is a very sobering and sad place to visit but very necessary. After the floods, the Delta Works were begun which are a series of surge protectors in the area to prevent a repeat of the tragedy of 1953. In the videos for day 5 we ride over the Oosterscheldekering which is a huge surge barrier.
After the museum we continue on to meet up with the barge in Zuirikzee.
In September 2024 I went on a Cycle Tours Bike & Barge vacation on barge Wending between Amsterdam in The Netherlands and Bruges in Belgium. The way such a vacation works is the guests eat and sleep on the barge then each morning making a packed lunch and then setting off on our bikes riding about 50km stopping for a coffee break and a lunch break. Mid to late afternoon the group would meet up with the barge which has sailed to a meeting point where we would have Happy Hour and then have dinner on board.
Along the way we stopped in Gouda, Dordrecht, Zuirikzee, Hanswwert, Antwerp and Ghent. The original route changed a little due to the weather.
The 20+ guests were looked after by a crew of four: Captain Arnaud, assistant Myrte, chef Emile and our guide Adri. All four of them were amazing and made sure everyone had a good time. On videos which end at the end of the day I will include pictures of the onboard dinner.
I highly recommend such a trip if you like gently cycling through lovely countryside. Such a vacation in The Netherlands and Belgium is especially appealing as it is mostly flat - the only problem facing the cyclist each day is the wind! But if the wind is behind you then it is great.
This was filmed in September 2024.

There is no music with this one - just the sounds of what was around
