Joe was originally a guitarist who became a drummer, because he could do it better (speed and strength phenomenal but timing changes not as nuanced) IMO. Jay is a drummer through and through. This is evident in his care with timing changes. Joe was perfect for Slipknot, and so is Jay.
RIP Joey, you will be missed.

The only reason jays drumming sounds “cleaner” has to do with two things. First, the fact that his kit is mic’d up and the heads he is using on his kit mainly the snare are different.

As a drummer myself I love both styles. Joey was the original and slipknot wouldnt be who it is now without him. Jay is an Incredible drummer for his age and I'm a massive fan of his style, love What he has bought to slipknot and in my opinion it was what was needed. He's changed the dynamic of the band for the good. Technically and artistically he is the next Joey already looking forward to see how he goes. The last 2 albums of his have been fuckin mint!

I would be curious to see Aquiles Priester play slipknot. Outside of Mike Mangini he was the best option for Dream Theater in place of Portnoy. He is a endless book on fills.
Can we please take into consideration of the sound quality between the two, old footage (1999-2006) sounds like it was recorded with a chalk board. Makes Joey sound less of quality compare to HD recorded sounds of today. Hence why Jay sounds cleaner/crisp, both great drummers btw, but I love Joeys speed,and on stage performance ( spinning drum solo and head banging while playing).
Joey is more of a endurance drummer. He gets into the tunnel and just lets loose, becomming the animal, achieving insane speed.
Jay is way more technical. The polyrythmic lines from unsainted would never have happened with joey. I love how slipknot gained so much more musical depth with Jay.
As a drummer I really love the classic songs, Wait and bleed, Duality, Before I Forget, People=Shit etc. All those classics can be learned quite easily. The hard part for most of them is building the endurance and the speed. But with the songs that Jay played, unsainted, not your kind etc. the drum parts are way harder, not because of speed but for complexity.
Joey drums hard, Jay drums smart. Both are in their own right just absolute geniusses on the drums. Love'em both.

He didnt get shafted. He had a neurodegenerative disorder in his legs that was preventing him from playing well, you can tell in a lot of 2013 clips. He left the band because they weren't playing at their best with him in it anymore and hes gone on interview saying he has no hard feelings for the decision made

The earlier years of Slipknot will always be the best. Iowa will always be the best time for Slipknot as a whole, in my opinion. That's the sole spirit of what Slipknot is and always should be. Since Joey left the band, I definitely have seen a massive decline in the band. They're just not the same band I became obsessed with and that actually saved my life. That being said, I have nothing against Jay. Both drummers are great, but I will always prefer Joey.

Zach Pohlman Okay I love Iowa but saying that it was the best time for them as a whole is pretty stupid, I think it was one of their best times music wise right next to WANYK. Corey has said that he drank a bottle of Jack before almost any show and smoked a lot of cigs. Most of the other members were on some pretty hard drugs too, especially Joey which is likely what caused his disease. I have nothing against Joey and I’m not saying he’s a bad drummer by any means but his form at times was a bit awkward and he wasn’t a very technical drummer but he had speed and put soul into his sound. Slipknot all together have gotten more mature and have tamed the beast that controlled them in their younger days.

As a drummer, Joey seemed to have degraded pretty quickly. His technique was great at first, his style was very straightforward and he had a decent amount of precision. Jay is much more technical, has fluid fills and drum patterns, and his style changes based on the song they play. Jay is the obvious winner, he is more technical, he is less straightforward and he played the songs Joey played, but in his own way. That's something that should be praised.

Joey is one of the small few og drummers that is super entertaining to watch. Great sound but as a fan he head banging with you while playing gives him my vote. Might not be as crisp as jay but i feel like joey is more playing while partying with you than playing for you while you party

from what I'm seeing idk much about music but Jay seems to be alot more rhythmic, he repeats movements with a rhythm to it over and over, almost taking a back seat to the song, where as Joey was just pure chaos, he was all over the damn place, all while rocking out head banging and shit, its genuinely insane to see how fast his arms were moving, Joey was the song

One good thing, that I could say about him, is that he was very creative with his parts(first three albums), and the first two albums were pure madness

For me it is like comparing Apples to Apples, they are both amazing in what they are capable of doing.
As a 15 year drummer myself overall both hit hard and are energetic. When it comes down to being in the pocket or clean playing jay takes the cake by a long shot. Joey takes innovation in terms of drum Riffs. But then again jay does that just not to the extent of Joey. Overall as a drummer I have to go with Jay based on technique and overall skill.
Joey in Vimic is super clean and technical now. He always was but the only really good audio clips of Joey in slipknot were in 2012-13 when his body was deteriorating

I have nothing against Jay but to me Joey WAS Slipknot. Imo the biggest reason I'd see them live was for him. I know Joey did it too but I feel that Jay is far more basic in his patterns especially during verses. Joey's unique style is what really got me into them and helped establish my love for drums. Joey just had this unique groove that was incredibly heavy and fit perfectly with the others. One of my top 10 drummers and why they ditched him the way they did is just beyond me.

I like both, but currently I like more Jay than Joey. He's doing an amazing work on the drums and he has improved a lot since his first shows with Slipknot. So if I had to choose only one of them, I would choose Jay.

Their both good but i think joey blows jay out of the water. He just seems more skilled and faster, his speed is flawless and he just performs it so well that you can hear every note and it isnt muddy.

Jay is definitely a more solid cleaner drummer. Joey wrote some sick drum lines but always plays sloppy and can’t hold a tempo. Plays way to fast and loses the pocket. Final =Jay is the better drummer

Not so much 🤦♂️ Joey was a naturally gifted percussionist but he lacked precision in tempo and sharpness in his strikes. Even on most of the studio albums (Iowa was his tightest) with the help of quantizing and other MP&E tricks the sound is very rushed and muddy. They’re better off with Jay who has a more comprehensive sounds and feel. Joey could better his skills by taking notes from tighter drummers like Vinnie Paul or Matt Grenier. #facts
Joey: Plays extremely fast with beats focusing heavily on rhythm, which then transcends into fills directly directed towards rhythm and the beat aswell. The fills radically change intensity often, making the drums switch between high and low moments frequently, which then keeps a constant high pressure in the song without feeling like untechnical intensity. Utilizing double base drums and a variety of rolls at ridiculous speed.
Jay: Focusing more on groove and melody, with fills to spontaneously change intensity from stalemates to create high areas. This creates more highlights in the drums. This results in overall rhythm being less interesting, with fills being the focus to lift the song.

I personally am loving the progression of Jay Weinberg. Hes got a funky, addictive playing style that blends metal and jazz...and its nuts. Hes a one of a kind...and is still so young who knows where his peak is

Joey is a natural, exceptional playing and ideas. Jay is technically OK, but his drumming is pretty boring and generic, no offense to his fans.
