I'm pretty sure the Americans annex Indian Territory when they do the Mexican-American War. It also makes the western US their homeland. It's their way of creating a convenient way for the US to annex the region like they did IRL.
It's the Mexican cessation/frontier journal entries, but I think USA can also auto annex indian territory if they pass multiculti before the trail of tears ends
It's not a glitch, when I played the USA and when I made multi-culturalism as a law, I annexed the Indian territory, so the USA might have just made multi-culturalism a law. (Update) Yeah, the Indian Territory is just screwed in every instance.)

2:45 That's why I like the paradox games. You *have* to sit down and evaluate the situation given the tools you have and you will almost invariably make a decision that's morally wrong but strategically correct in some way and when you step back from the game you have that moment "holy fuck I'm a monster" and the complete thought process of why you made that choice to evaluate. In the end, if you have the self reflection capacity to have that moment, you end up a more empathetic and thoughtful person because you have been confronted with the necessity of evaluating those trains of thought and knowing where they lead.
I think that if you play as IT then they should have a flag to force the US to release the territory if controlled by a player in single player and they have decent standing. Otherwise it is literally out of your hands.. They could also move the territory to the location they moved the natives as well for trail of tears.
you say grand strategy games dehumanize those kinds of situations? well, that's exactly how governments think when they deal with any problem, it doesn't matter if john gets no bread for his family, the greater good becomes more important at least in crusader kings there are some character names and portraits but still, you have no emotional connection with the thousands of nameless man-at-arms or levies

i got the achievement for this in the last patch.... i got really lucky that america had just a massive confederacy pop up when i was fairly well established, then i just had to wait 5 years enough times for them to surreender enough land. i got annexed as a protectorate of the US, not a puppet, so it seems they will annex you regardless of what subject you are... i think i did something like, rerolled until france would protective, and the US surrendered to france once they were on my side, then, i took texas, and became a protectoratee of the US, just kept expanding into africa, by taking zulu and them, making a ton of gold mines, which basically propped up my growth and construction. then the US annexed mee so i went back, got my freedom and joined france's market. from there, it was just taking states off the US as much as i could, until a giant confederacy popped up and split the US into DC and the plains, so i just slowly took it off them, and became a massive world power (with a multibillion economy) almost all of this was done because of multiculturalism, and total seperation... i surprisingly had a massive french minority. but you need that texas port. theres no way to play the sloww game in this, if you dont have a port early, and the US is successfully expanding west, youre gonna have a bad time, you need to leave puppet status quickly, and get a port, you cant just chill as oklahhoma for 30 years.
I literally just attempted this! But failed when America decided to take Oklahoma directly in a diplomatic play against Mexico. I was doing ok too (had 4th highest GDP per capita at one point) but I don’t think I’m familiar enough with the mechanics to plan ahead and figure it out. Curious what you do.

it should be like a desicion event after the mexican war for the indian terrytory where you can choose betwen staying independetn beeing annexed or become a protectorate, AI beeing inclined to annexation but when someone is playing it has the option.
There are two ways the US can diplo-annex the Indian territory. The first way only works against the AI, the second *does* work against players. also your SOL was low because of the trail of tears modifier, which gives -6 SOL to all cherokee pops in Oklahoma

Knowing a bit of the history for why historical state boarders happened makes watching US games uncomfortable.
