"All this little japanese anime girl bullshit, is bullshit. These little anime girls are lying to you about how good you should feel about yourself." George Weidman, 2014. laughed my ass off.
I could see VR getting huge in workout gyms. You attach the VR to a Treadmill and play games "like run from the zombies". The treadmill will adjust your speed for when you're getting chases and stuff. I'd go to the gym to play that.
+Quiptipt Latest news some kid died of dehydration, he was on the final boss, it took him 3.4 days straight running on a threadmill, he collapsed 2 minutes short of beating the final boss and died.
damn, this could actually work. It's even an elegant solution to the problem of locomotion in vr. The only problem I see is that it's probably not very healthy to look behind you all the time while running. I assume it would be about chasing something rather than being chased.
Your dedication, humor, and thoughtful dialogue have all come together to produce what is undoubtedly one of my favorite youtube channels. The quality of content on this channel is so high I've turned off my adblock - for the first time in years - in order to allow my views to count towards revenue for such a dedicated and well produced channel. Thank you Super Bunnyhop for earning my subscription the old fashioned way.
Best "game" for working out is to play for the numbers, just like MMOs. Being able push more weight, more times. Being able to run faster and longer. Tracking your improvement, building your strength.
While you're making good points, the most difficult part of working out tends to be sticking with it in the beginning when you don't see results yet but the first day's boost of motivation is over and games like these may be helpful to overcome that first stumbling block before the exercise becomes rewarding in and of itself.
Niantic doesn't even fucking understand that they could have solved America's obesity problem with sustained quick updates to Pokemon Go. Keep those fatties playing! They are walking miles to play this, don't let it die off until we've all lost a few pounds!
The best work out games that werent work out games were the DDR games. They encouraged high level play and once you got there it was also quitr the work out. But the work out was a secondary reward. But the true reward was a good old arcade grade and high score. But thanks to all the market flooding from guitar hero. Music games like DDR may never see light in the west again
Going to point out on top of that, some of the later DDR games had a dedicated work out mode where the main difference was based on your performance, height and weight, it estimated your calories burned and could keep a record of it. I know the Wii version of the game had this.
Running for 30 Minutes?! You're in quite a good shape to begin with mate! Most people have problems with 5 minutes of running and i mean RUNNING not jogging. For some reason I can cycle for several hours at a good pace and good heart rate but give me 10 minutes of running and I'm winded, sweaty and my legs are sore...
+foxman105 I can't jog for more than 1 minute, but I could sit on a bicycle for several days. Cycling isn't as stressful to your body, it's smooth and doesn't murder your legs, hip or spine.
Totaly depends on how fast u cycling...simply becuse you cyckle at 15-20km/h dose not meen its good workout..you really need to feel it in your legs..when i go cycling for 60min i barely can stand after becuse i focus properly..also getting a bike with more then 1 gear is a good idea...
The comedy value on this one is off the charts. George gasping and panting from a run while complaining about the balance of the accompanying workout game is so brilliant I actually laughed out loud. And the headband with the regular, slightly vexed facial expression? This made my evening.
It always comes down to the game itself personally for having a lot of us get up and move. For me, I've been a strong supporter for games like Just Dance and Dance Masters since it's actual dancing. I love to do the movements for some actual dances, while at the same time, notice more on how much I can burn within a session of 20-40 mins. All in all, it comes down to the game for either having the right balance and knowing where you're going/what you're doing, to having the game be engaging.
I think the reason these games exist might be because working out and getting fit, to a lot of people, simply ISN'T rewarding enough on its own. It depends on the individual person, but the gap between working out hard and feeling more fit can be a major turnoff. So in the end, while the true goal is to get fit, I can definitely see how tackling small, video-gamey goals along the way would feel easier with small, video gamey rewards thrown in. Too bad the actual workout amounts aren't really well thought out, but that's another issue...
i think this also has to do with the fact that fat people's dopamine reward system is fucked up before they realise they need to work out so to get out of this horrible cycle of eating and sadness a person needs to repair their dopamine system and work out simultaneously
"But what I did do, what I can't believe I actually did do, for the sake of this review and research, was follow this thing's instructions to the end of the story." Don't lie, you did it because you enjoyed it. I'm onto you.
That you need cardio to burn fat is incorrect, resistance moves like situps help to build muscle which has a higher metabolic rate so it burns fat too. Btw situps are pretty bad for your back
yep. situps use calories. and a calorie deficit consumes fat stores. my old physical trainer use to say resistance training burns more calories than aerobic since muscles take a longer time to repair and grow i don't know about all that .
It's funny that you suggest the use of podcasts during workout and that MattVisual is a part of this video, because I've been using Dad and Sons as my workout material. Thanks for the great content!

That's what I do! While on bike outside of town, I listen to podcasts, vlogs, etc. You and TotalBiscuit are among my favourites.
I just recently tried the Wii Fit thing, because my girlfriend wanted to buy it. And I must say... it's actually quite some fun, and really got me up my lazy bum and actually move a bit. Without it, I really wouldn't have done anything and now I actually do some kind of small workout every day. I guess it can be quite some motivation for some people and that's really nice. Of course everyone should search for just the right fit from all these games. That Moe thing... dear lord. I wouldn't want to workout with this stuff. If mp3s of your favourite Podcast work the best for you, so be it, very good. These days we really have quite an array of possibilities to choose from, how and with what or who we want to workout. That's nice.
The end of the video is really how people should see exercise. I treat it as a 'game' where I always try to beat my old high score. I also do cardio on a stationary bike and I can watch a bunch of TV shows while I do it so it isn't boring at all.
When I was in college, I saved the slow, non-reflex intensive DS games I owned (like Phoenix Wright and Advance Wars) for when I was on the treadmill. I was going to play these things anyway and doing it on the treadmill was a good way to enjoy them while moving around a bit.
To be fair on the Zombie game, interval sprints for 1 minute, even if going from walking to a jog, burns many more calories than maintaining the same pace. So hey, credit for decent design on that one despite flawed balance.
For the first time in my life, I've started getting in shape this year with a home gym and everything and it's psychologically grueling to do day in day out. I've tried a half-dozen different incentive systems to encourage me that really only work when I'm in the mood for them to. And I"m glad podcasts work for you, because I tried listening to video lectures while lifting, but my brain just shuts down to anything outside of counting reps That zombie game actually sounds sort of brilliant to me, (though obviously it's just as limited in its input as the "Sit up, Pervert" game). Creating a secondary measurement that reflects the work you're doing is pretty much the whole point of RPGs, but after five months of work, being twenty pounds lighter with noticeable muscle definition just isn't as rewarding to my twisted gamer brain as seeing a STR +1 on a stat screen. Even so, great video as always. If you ever figure out how to make an actually effective push-up Skinner box that doesn't rely on moe anime girls, please, do tell. :)
Podcasts while running? That's a great tip. I usually listened music and the rhythm of the music usually distracted the rhythm of the running and breathing. Not that I'd exercise anymore.
I used to be on a collegiate cycling team and a collegiate cross country team. I don't really know why, but I always had a way better experience playing a video game after practice. Either I subconsciously thought of the video game as my reward after a workout, or it was just the dopamine overload.
That... That made a lot of sense. I feel like you'd have an especially easy time digesting and enjoying a story or podcast you like if you had something to put your hands into while you listen to it. I tend to not be able to sit still unless I'm doing something while listening to another something. Playing a game, browsing the internet, or even biking, really help me to keep focused on whatever it is I'm listening to. Now if only I didn't sweat... Then I wouldn't ruin my rly expensive headphones.
Great Video as always. While ago I heard of a Game Called Run an Empire. It wasn't exactly a fitness game but more of a game you could do while jogging or biking. Basically it tracked you via GPS and every time you did a lap of an area you would gain 1 point of control over it, the more laps the more control you had. if you ran in other peoples areas they could gain control over it. It had its obvious issues but seemed fun.
I found that indoor climbing is a lot of fun all by itself right from the beginning, I don't need any extra motivation to do it actually. I suggest everyone tries it :)
Just a minor critique, but I think you guys can appreciate this kind of detail: When using several cameras, make an effort to talk to both of them, and then cut to the second camera when you're talking into it. I'd also make the camera angles more different, so you have more to gain, visually, from the second camera. It feels weird when the camera angle changes, and you're still looking into the first camera, looking off to the side and talking to what looks to be a wall, showing me the whites of your eyes.
Awesome idea for a video. Also I've noticed that your video's quality has been really going up, good work dude, I 'm really enjoying your more journalistic style over watching some bullshit ad-libbing over a livestream being considered a "review". Hooray for smart New Media!
What I need is an RPG status window for myself. That would work in my case. Something like I have 155 STR and 96 VIT. Something for INT and CHA would be nice too. A display for a LUK value would be awesome too.
Not sure what to think about the VR fitness, because unless you're on something like a treadmill i doubt that can end well with the cords and wasn't it when showing oculus rift at conventions then it was recommended sitting so you wouldn't get kind if dizzy since you're sitting but brain might think you're running or something to that effect.
Am... Am I the only one who looked at mayu in that visual novel game and even before seeing the name thinking she looked like Shiina Mayuri... I can't be the only one...
I had a friend who found it really difficult to work out. So I recommended this app to him (can't recall the name), and he got in shape within 6 months. The trick was that it was set up to deduct $100 per month if he didn't work out. So yeah, if you take it seriously the idea of loss aversion can really work well it seems. For anyone else, I'd always recommend swimming. I find that I can swim for much longer periods than I can run.
One game which I am succesfully using to lose weight is Stepmania (a Dance Dance Revolution clone), of course I am using it combined with a diet I guess it works because I think of it more of a game than a proper workout and being able to beat hard songs really encourage me to keep playing. Plus, it's a convenient activity that you con do without leaving your house, especially if it's raining and you can't do things outdoors
As someone who has lifted weights on and off since the age of 11. The only thing that has motivated me to keep exercising has been powerlifting. The means are directly related to the ends, whereas with bodybuilding you might have a bad day wjere you dont look as good or bad lighting etc. Fat loss is all diet, it really cant feasibly be done any other way.
I really enjoyed Wii Fit U, and played for about a month. I think the main problems for me are my routine and the room/floor, cuz I don't have much space... But it's pretty enjoyable and rewarding, specially the minigames and yoga. I recommend it :)
I have a silly question that is driving me nuts. When the VERY brief clip of Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum plays(about 1:50), what is that piece of music accompanying it? I know it somehow, and its source is dangling in that just-out-of-reach part of my brain that causes you to fixate on something so trivial. Worse yet, since all I have to work with is a couple of notes of a song to find my answer, I have those notes playing on repeat inside my head. For some reason I thought I had heard the song on a Cyriak video, but I rewatched most of his stuff hunting for it and got nowhere. Somebody please help me. Thanks.
Superhero Workout made it to one of those aggregate sites. . .it might of been IFLS. It got me curious but then I learned that it uses motion sensors via the selfie-cam and I only have an iPhone4. . .so I doubt its ability to track me when I prop it atop my furniture.
I think in order to enjoy Zombies Run you have to be willing to roleplay a bit, I found that if you pretend you're really being chased and try not to game the system too much it's a really fun way to work out. As long as you understand that you should have no problem. I play a lot of pen and paper RPG's with my friends, so the idea that the game would be more fun if I didn't try my hardest to beat it came naturally to me though.
Playing skyrim while watching this, and right after the moevation girl said "Thank you for doing this with me!" I heard from the other side, "Shut up back there!"
The biggest problem with working out is beating the inertia, which these games do by giving you a objective. So your better option is to set up a solid objective that actually requires the result of the workout. Instead of losing weight or getting a bigger butt, train for a marathon, try to be a amateur rugby player or try a fighting class.
This might have been mentioned elsewhere, but I was never under the impression that the pokewalker was intended to get us to exercise. It was more of an extension of the core game that helped facilitate the fantasy of carrying your very own pokemon around with you. You clip the pokeball like design onto your belt just like they do in the anime for example. This is boosted further by the fact that the games they were released with has your top party pokemon follow you around in game too. Small point, yet I felt I should mention it as you focused on it twice without vocal acknowledgement. Unless of course there is some sort of interview out there where they say otherwise?
You brought up mobile games while completely ignoring the merits of games with attachments. Workout games can work. Look at DDR which I can't find anywhere in your video. You can progress through the game, get better, and burn a heck of a lot of calories. It's a fun activity with multiple difficulties, and it is what you make it, you can throw in dance moves if you want. Other dance games force you to get your body involved by watching your movements with a camera. It sounds like you're shoving the whole idea off as a bad one near the end of the video and I can't say I really agree with that.
Sad thing is, that running thing _could_ have been interesting had they made it visual instead. Think about it, a running sim where you can choose to be chased by zombies, or dinosaurs, or a giant tidal wave, or whatever you choose to keep it fresh and fun! Can you imagine having an oculus rift on and experiencing that?
Someone tell George that's not how you do situps. You don't lean your head forward like that, it forces the forward motion (which should all be propelled by the torso) and messes up your neck.
"All this little japanese anime girl bullshit, is bullshit. These little anime girls are lying to you about how good you should feel about yourself."

I agree
I do 10 push ups every time I die in dark souls
You must be huge.
your welcome
What if you become so good in Dark Souls that you become fat because of that ? eh ? EH ?
the four kings and cliffs will keep me active. that and 5 more push ups every hour of game play
If you want to be fit, do 10 push ups every time you bone or assassinate a relative in Crusader Kings 2.

Actually jogging, interspersed with sprinting intervals, is great for cardiovascular health.

With VR they just need to make a workout game that rewards the player with hentai.
Kinky Sketch wouldn't developers for those games have to compete with games that already ARE hentai, in that case?
I love working out and running, Can't wait for VR games based on exercise :-)
This is such a fun video. I'd love to see a follow up?
I like the zombie one. It's very original.
It's certainly a very effective association. Run so Zombies don't kill you makes total sense.
Sit up so anime girls like you? I don't get that one...
dorsk188 People are into some *weird* stuff man....
***** Hey, don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with liking anime girls (within reason), but I just don't get the association with sit ups.
dorsk188 It seems basic if silly to me: work out so girls think you look good
dorsk188 i was actually more weirded out by the zombie thing. Anime shit doesn't phase you after a while.

sprinting in intervals is called intervals, it's an actual type of training runners undergo! :D
So are hills! Dashing up hills may seem hard but they get you fit faster once you can deal with it.
And now we have Pokemon Go, the most effective workout game known to man.
Niantic doesn't even fucking understand that they could have solved America's obesity problem with sustained quick updates to Pokemon Go. Keep those fatties playing! They are walking miles to play this, don't let it die off until we've all lost a few pounds!
Oops it died off.
Yep.
It was a fun 2 weeks.
@@100billionsubscriberswithn4 Surprisingly a few of my friends still play it, but it is mostly dead compared to what it was
As soon as you said "Moevation" I started crying with laughter. This app cannot be real.
I'm still waiting on a fitness based MMO..
You need more carbs if you're gonna tank that ogre berserker.
Fuck that if you wanna get fit we need Physical Souls. Although rolling may have some unforseen consequences.
I actually really like this idea...
It already exists. It's called "Real Life".
there is one now!
Cardio treadmill+ Metal Gear Rising
+Mishal Banker I think you meant, RULES OF NATURE BA BA BUM!
The Polyester Pimp I listen to the MGR soundtrack while I'm on the treadmill.

I guess it works because I think of it more of a game than a proper workout and being able to beat hard songs really encourage me to keep playing. Plus, it's a convenient activity that you con do without leaving your house, especially if it's raining and you can't do things outdoors
Nice vid. I love to see vids related to casual gaming.
Your videos are so good, im so glad Totalbiscuit brought me here !
The sit-up scene was pure gold.
Dude, you should have talked about Rhythm games, like DDR and Pump it Up. Those style of games really worked out for me. And they are fun as hell.
I think I'm gonna go get Moévated now after watching this video.
2:04 Finally, I've watched dozens of these video just to figure out what that one photo on the wall is, Space Ghost.
What's the song at 1:53?
Song at 1:53?
I think in order to enjoy Zombies Run you have to be willing to roleplay a bit, I found that if you pretend you're really being chased and try not to game the system too much it's a really fun way to work out. As long as you understand that you should have no problem. I play a lot of pen and paper RPG's with my friends, so the idea that the game would be more fun if I didn't try my hardest to beat it came naturally to me though.
I love your videos on weird obscure games.
That zombie thing would be interesting. Some scared britbongs interspliced between J-pop and "Sunshine lollypops and rainbows everything"
The hypest workouts on RUclips
Weird plug for the Super Best Friendcast.
It's okay, I love them too.
Props for Perturbator!
Playing skyrim while watching this, and right after the moevation girl said "Thank you for doing this with me!" I heard from the other side, "Shut up back there!"
3 words. Dance. Dance. Revolution.
The biggest problem with working out is beating the inertia, which these games do by giving you a objective. So your better option is to set up a solid objective that actually requires the result of the workout. Instead of losing weight or getting a bigger butt, train for a marathon, try to be a amateur rugby player or try a fighting class.
dude i laughed so hard thanks for making this video!
EDIT: holy shit you listen to friendcast too?? that's amazing man...
oh what, I also listen to the SBFC while running
This might have been mentioned elsewhere, but I was never under the impression that the pokewalker was intended to get us to exercise. It was more of an extension of the core game that helped facilitate the fantasy of carrying your very own pokemon around with you. You clip the pokeball like design onto your belt just like they do in the anime for example. This is boosted further by the fact that the games they were released with has your top party pokemon follow you around in game too.
Small point, yet I felt I should mention it as you focused on it twice without vocal acknowledgement. Unless of course there is some sort of interview out there where they say otherwise?
8:45 was that Matt the Visual? I'd recognize that wholesome laugh anywhere, especially in a video about fitness waifus
Gotta love Thursday.
"Sempai is MY boyfriend."
Lmao what the hell.
YE BOI THE SUPER BEST FRIEND CAST RULES!
Nice video also i didnt know you like the best friends zaibatsu
Sad thing is, that running thing _could_ have been interesting had they made it visual instead. Think about it, a running sim where you can choose to be chased by zombies, or dinosaurs, or a giant tidal wave, or whatever you choose to keep it fresh and fun! Can you imagine having an oculus rift on and experiencing that?
Amelia Bee the problem there is that you'd have to run while looking at the screen which is very uncomfortable

Super Best Friendcast is your favorite podcast too? Great taste!
Someone tell George that's not how you do situps.
You don't lean your head forward like that, it forces the forward motion (which should all be propelled by the torso) and messes up your neck.
