Take high school seriously enough to where you see it as a beam for your future endeavors; if you plan on being an academic or going to a good school, spend more time studying and doing your work than not. Don’t think you don’t have to study, and don’t be comfortable just because teachers seem lenient or unconcerned. If you aren’t that concerned about your academics, don’t study and do work at school on time. Don’t just get on your phone to distract yourself. Pay attention and take notes. Realize that drama is corny and won’t matter in 20 years unless it literally seems like a plot of Pretty Little Liars and someone might end up dead, which is unlikely. Don’t spend time gossiping, and actually care about your friends. You’re going to get caught up in if anything really matters, how people perceive you, and if your path is really what you want, but BFFR and just take the obvious routes. You’re already over complicating things. The most you’ll really be concerned about the first year is fitting in, seeming like an adult or like you’re not just a kid, and looking/being lost. None of that really matters, yet are all part of growing up. Tl;dr: just tailor your academic life to what your end goals are, you don’t have to figure it all out the first year, but try to get good grades if you decide you do later want to get in a good college. High school is just middle school with just more responsibilities focused on your adult life, rather than your future kid life like how it was in middle school. It’s only as deep as you make it fr. School will be easier if you have friends that don’t yap to you about drama or don’t really seem to care about you, and dating, imo, should be as conservative as possible cuz you’re still a kid and shouldn’t be jumping off the walls romantically and sexually.
Basically, don’t be scared guys. There’s very little to worry about, and 90% of problems is perceived because you already have a picture of high school in your head. I guess I’m making it seem a little deep, but high school isn’t deep, it’s the feelings of being in it that are. Which is valid, but they don’t have to define your experience. You get used to it all after like a year, if even. If you’re teased about being young and later stressed about being old enough to have a lot of responsibilities impacting your future life more directly, than know it’s all only temporary. Just pay attention in class and don’t try to live like it’s Mean Girls or some other teen drama or comedy. Embrace that you’re a kid and that you’ll make mistakes, you can have fun as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. Crap from your teacher or administrators or upperclassmen shouldn’t bother you or terrify you unless you’re actually in trouble, but do try to be the bigger person and respectful.
You also don’t need to hyperfixate on makeup, hair, and your clothes. Trends are annoying to follow and you don’t want to feel like a fish out of water when you don’t think what you’re doing works. Just don’t look or smell dirty, don’t try to look like an adult, and don’t look like you just came out of Claire’s or Justice. Just be comfortable yet groomed. Wake up at least an hour before your transportation is ready, and at least try to have breakfast. *Talk to upperclassmen like they don’t hate you, be respectful yet sweet so they won’t be annoyed by you. Upperclassman feel important when you try and treat them like a mentor, just as long as you don’t go too far and act like they should know all the answers. Be curious, not yapping.
