How to Unlock a GM LAN29 Radio with a VCX Nano or MDI running Tech2Win Software
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 18 июл 2021
- Have you recently purchased or are considering purchasing a VCX Nano or cloned MDI module? If so, you will not be able to erase and reprogram the VIN of the "new" radio. The reason, you ask? The software included with the VCX Nano or cloned MDI has a version of Tech2Win that has eliminated the capability to program the proper VIN to a "new" radio.
Follow the video and I show that you can, in fact, reprogram radios after you roll back the firmware version of the Tech2Win software. This is mainly for GM LAN29 vehicles from 2006 to 2013 such as the Impala, Tahoe, Traverse, Silverado, Lucerne, and their corporate cousins.
Just a side note: If your vehicle model was first introduced AFTER 2010 (like the Cruze, Volt, Camaro, etc.) this trick WILL NOT WORK. The vehicle in this video is a 2015, but was first introduced in 2006. GM switched to what is referred to as the "Global A" architecture for its new vehicles starting in 2010. I would suggest you try this product:

One more thing I found out after posting this video: The original firmware version 33.004 that came with the VCX Nano is not deleted when you follow the procedure to roll back to 30.004. When you initialize the Tech2Win program, click on "North American" to run 33.004 (which I have to do for my newer Impalas, as 30.004 only goes to 2011.) To use 30.004, click on "GM NAO." They both co-exist without any other tweaks.
For instance, you want to program a new radio and new key fobs to a 2012 Impala. You will need to run "GM NAO" (30.004) on the Tech2Win to program the radio. After that you will have to exit out of Tech2Win, restart it, and run "North American" (33.004) to program the key fobs...
Do you know if the vcx nano will program seats with airbags from a 2009+ impala limited (2016) into a 2008? I replaced my 2008 cloth interior with 2016 impala limited leather seats with airbags in the side. Right now the service airbag light comes on because the seats are for 2009-2016. There is a yellow wire for the airbags on the new seats the old ones only have the black plug
@@BmajaEngineering It's not as simple as reprogramming the 2008's airbag module to accept the side airbags from the 2016. The modules are very very model specific and are next to impossible to reprogram after they've been initialized to a specific vehicle. You would need a single vehicle subscription to GM's Techline SPS to do any programming, but at that point you'd just be able to program a brand new module to your specific vehicle (so essentially you'd be spinning in circles.) You can use Tech2Win to read the airbag codes, and clear them, but if there were any "hard" codes set (from a collision for instance) you would have to send it out to be reset. My guess is this has something to do with the pressure sensor (or the "presence monitor") in the passenger seat. I'm willing to bet the wiring is different and the airbag module isn't seeing the proper signal from the passenger seat, thus setting the code.
I would take both the old and new seat bottoms apart and swap over the components from the old seat. While you're in there, scrap the factory seat heater pads and install an aftermarket set of seat heaters (it's impossible to get the stock seat heater controls to work with a car that came with cloth.)
@@CertifiedShadetree yea you are right the wiring is different, the passenger side seat won’t even move so I’ll have to splice the power and ground or run a wire to the fuse box for that, as far as the heated seats I was told I could give it power and ground run it to a switch and they would work. I was hoping to possibly get all the components modules etc from the donor car and get it to work but as you say it’s not easy to get the airbags programmed to my car even if I do get everything. Thank you for your help. I love the vids. I’m n he process of gettin this baby back on the road. I put a new 50k 3.5 liter engine in it just need to swap a tranny in it and I’ll be good. Be nice to get this air bag light off maybe I can cut some airbag wire to get it to stop sensing the seat airbags that the car didn’t come with
@@BmajaEngineering The stock heater pads run at a different voltage, so you'll just burn them out if you run straight power to them. That's why I say just go with an aftermarket kit. The pads aren't difficult at all to swap out, I just did a video on how to swap them out. The airbag system is pretty damn finicky - you'll get a warning message if you disconnect the indicator above the radio FFS!! You know, before tearing the seat apart, I'd just check the wires on the old seat's black plug and compare it to the new seat's plug. Might be a matter of changing a few wires around in the plug. The yellow airbag wires/plugs shouldn't have any effect on the system, since they're separate from the seat's main plug (and your car doesn't have anywhere for them to connect to.) Still putting my money on the passenger side seat sensor either being incompatible or wired differently.
@@CertifiedShadetree thanks I’ll let you know how it goes. I really want to find a my link unit soon and upgrade that as well but I’ll have to grab that vcx nano. Watching your videos are so helpful. I appreciate all the info and advice.
Talk to you soon, Brian.
I just found this video today while trying to unlock a 2014 Tahoe Nav radio. This video (along with another outlining how to roll back the Tech2Win software) saved me so much agony today. I programmed the radio via Techline Connect as I've done with other modules many times, and the programming completed but the radio was still locked. I thought I was out of luck until your video saved me today. Thanks a bunch and take care!
Glad to hear it! 🍻
2006 Impala SS now has the UGY headunit out of a 2013 Acadia. Loving it, thanks so much for your series!!
You're very welcome! 🍻
It worked perfectly! Thank you again!
AWESOME!! 😎
I was able to unlock a nav radio in an 06 Cadillac using MDI. Tech2win 30.004. Tried several times before I finally got the correct vehicle selection.
What model Cadillac? Curious what radio it has as well.
@@CertifiedShadetree not really sure about everything I selected. I know I went 06 Cadillac, Sts or stx, then it asked me for another sub model. There were 3 choices. I picked the first one. Then it went just like the monticarlo. Body, entertainment, navigation radio. Then I had 3 choices of which one was Vin relearn. I tried doing it as a monticarlo 4 or 5 times. It was a junkyard radio out of an 07 or 08 Cadillac.
Good to know. Maybe after all of this the main takeaway is you match Chevy to Chevy, Cadillac to Cadillac, etc..

Question? I watched your video on installing a MyLink in a Chevy Impala. Now with the VCX Nano do you still have to have the UG4 or UI6 radio or it don't matter now that you have this? Help me out bro.
The VCX Nano will unlock any stock radio, so it doesn't matter the option code. I've also used it to unlock the Impala "dot matrix" radio AND the "alarm clock" radio.
Thanks because i had a radio i bought from a guy on FB Marketplace and i found out it came out of a 2017 Chevy Traverse and it was a UHU coded radio. I was about to sell it back on Marketplace til i seen this video. Thanks i appreciate it bro.
@@dloc6198 Aww damn. That's what sucks about the UHU, you can't tell what it is by looking at it unless it's powered up. How much was he asking for it?
I put a '14 mylink with adapter harness in my '10 camaro. EPROM VIN has updated. The screen remains black. With this method make the screen turn on?
No. The 5th Gen Camaro is on the "Global A" architecture and would need to be connected through SPS to be properly programmed. Check out Dr.Shock's YT channel. He shows you how to program a Global A radio..
Thanks for the video, I’m just wondering why you put it as an 06 Monte Carlo? I recently bought a ui6 radio, and want to install in my 13 impala Ltz, do you recommend I take the same steps you did?
Yes. The 06 Monte LTZ is the only model in the software of the Tech 2 that has the "erase VIN" capability. Since the 06 Monte shares the LAN29 architecture with the Impala, Tahoe, Silverado, Escalade, Lucerne, etc. you are able to set the vehicle as such to program the radio. Now trying to program anything else on your 13 Impala as an 06 Monte won't work due to several other things being different. The radio programming is the same across the board..
@@CertifiedShadetreeCool man, thank you!
Best of luck to you! 🍻
@@CertifiedShadetree not true. I found the Vin relearn in one of the Cadillac models. The monticarlo trick did not work on the 06 caddy.
I have a 2006 Malibu with a stock radio from a junkyard. The dealer unlocked the radio but the steering wheel radio controls are all messed up (mute button lowers volume, for example) Could they have done it wrong?
All the dealer does is clear the VIN, so they couldn't have screwed up the radio. What exact vehicle did the radio come from? It's possible that if you got a radio from a different year Malibu or different model, the wiring pinouts could be different, or the steering wheel controls send out a different signal. If you matched the radio exactly to your car (year and model) I would suspect something fishy with the radio itself.
I want to add navigation on my 2014 Silverado with a 2.0 hmi . I purchased a used 2.5 hmi from a 2016 z71 Silverado. Will this work to clear the vin lock on the 2016 hmi
No it will not. Your vehicle has the "Global A" architecture, this is only for "LAN29" vehicles. Check the description for a link to a device that'll clear the VIN Lock on most Global A GM's..
Please help! just purchased a VCX NANO I am having trouble downloading the GDS2 software can you give me guidance? TIA

I have a 2008 Chevy Tahoe LT Touch Screen and it’s displays “Theft Locked” will this work?
Yes, exactly as shown.
Base cassette tape radio on a 2003 GMC Sierra. Will it work? and can this be done online?
With the VCX Nano you should be able to just set it to your 03 Sierra and go from there without rolling the software back. The only time you'd need to do any "online" programming is if you need to reprogram a BCM. And at that point you'd need a subscription to SPS/Techline.
Just got a U18 headunit for my 9c1 impala, gonna try and see how far I can get with the functionality on it lol
Everything should work except voice commands and audio during phone calls since the 9C1 doesn't have an OnStar box in the trunk. Although, and I haven't confirmed it yet, I've heard you can cut the end off of one of those cheap microphones and splice the wires onto the pins that slide into the harness. Pins 4 and 5 that you'd run to the OnStar box - hook the mic wires directly there.
@CertifiedShadetree I forgot to mention I have a whole body harness from an onstar equipt impala. Goes from junction box to to the trunk with every single plug including the antenna.
@@Docfrazier81 Well there ya go! Just need to connect pins 4 & 5 of the C1 to pins 6 & 12 of the OnStar box and you'll have voice commands! Forgot to mention, if you get an XM tuner box from the same vehicle as the radio you can add live weather and traffic to the nav screen (with a subscription, of course!)
@@CertifiedShadetree I think I did grab one of those from a caddy.

Do all the 9th generation stock Impala radios lock out if you disconnect the battery??
No. It will work just fine if you disconnect the battery. Your vehicle's VIN is stored in the memory, so it can only be used in your vehicle. If you try installing a radio from another vehicle you get the locked message.

Check the link to the video I listed in the description. You basically make a copy of the original 33.004 BIN file and rename the 30.004 in its place. Something like that 😁..
Will this Work on the 2017 Trax radio with sat radio?
No. I would give this a try: www.obdgenie.com/collections/gm-genies/products/gm-vin-clear-programmer?variant=31843513794633
Hi do you happen to know if this would work to unlock a radio for a 2009 Cadillac CTS-V? If it would not, do you happen to know what would?
Well not having a 2009 CTS-V, I am not able to set up my Tech2Win to verify (it hangs up after I get into vehicle selection ☹.) I would wager a guess if you rolled the firmware version back to 30.004 it would have that capability.

I have a 2012 Camaro and I am wanting to put in a 2013 or newer radio will this trick work?
Sadly, it will not. The 2010+ Camaro is a "Global A" vehicle, and the radio needs to be programmed either by the dealer or by cracking it open and erasing the VIN stored in the EEPROM chip. Check out Dr.Shock's channel - he shows you how to erase the VIN from a Cruze Global A radio, which will be the same as your Camaro..

Does this still work after the latest acdelco update? I have an obdx pro vx and im trying to add a backup camera to my factory nav 2008 sierra. I have tried using sps2 only
No it does not, which is the whole reason for this video. In the very last Tech2Win update (ever - v33.004) the capability was removed, hence the need to roll back from version 33.004 to version 30.004 to regain the capability..

Before opening T2W, have you first run the VX Manager program and verified the VCX Nano is communicating with the vehicle?
Yeah it’s weird. When I run the latest 33.004 I can read modules (oddly not all though I get the same error) but it does communicate. When I run the 30.004 it gives me that damn error. 🤣 Especially after the 2017 NFC title game!! 🤣
Another thing I thought of - I have had issues where I try and try to connect and keep getting the error message. I found that rebooting the computer and starting everything from scratch usually remedies the connection issue. I'll unplug the Nano and reinsert it for good measure. You could also check on the VX Manager if there are any updates available for the Nano's firmware. I did have to uninstall and reinstall the software at one point (although I can't remember exactly what I did to screw everything up that necessitated the reinstall..)
I keep telling myself when I get connection issues that this is what naturally occurs with a pirated chinese dealer-level scan tool!! 🤣
Okay after doing some further research, it appears that the mere fact that I cannot connect to SOME modules is highly indicative that I one of the modules (or wiring) is causing a short in the low-speed GM LAN bus. The trick is to isolate which module is causing the issue. There is a good video here where he shows how he uses a simple jumper harness ( all wires are linked together ) to slowly find which module is causing the issue.
