I really love the sentiment that this was done because the team felt that CGI has hit it's plateau as far as "realism" goes and now it's time to go back and put more emphasis on stylized animation. Spider-Verse dashed out and others are looking to keep pace and I am all for it.
Dreamworks really love the redemptive villain plotline, don't they? Understandable when you consider how successful 'Shrek' was. What in hindsight seemed simply a middle finger from the makers towards their former employer at Disney actually became a pop culture phenomenon in its own right, as well as a much talked about piece of revisionism in the fantasy genre. The irony!
Man, I slept on the hype for this one something fierce. I saw a trailer for this and thought "Ugh, dreamworks is at it again." and now all my most trusted reviewers are singing its praises. It seems like twas I that needed to not just the book by its cover, ironic.
Saw this the other day! I never even knew about the books but the plot twists had me amused and at the edge of my seat 😂 It even had a fair amount of emotion and the character animations themselves were satisfying.
I can honestly say that this film wasn't really what I thought it would be. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. Just that it could have been done better. In the film we don't really learn much of the main characters, other than they're villains simply because they feel like they have to be. Now that's an interesting story, but only Wolf and Snake explain why they choose to be the bad guys (and it's very limited), while we don't get any story from the other three. The other characters don't really have a lot of development either. Plus, it was also very cartoonish (and quite childish at times), and I really have to add...the story was quite predictable. Another thing is how there are some animals with human features, yet there are other animals that resemble actual animals - it just doesn't make any sense. And finally, everything happened too quickly - it was also like the movie was trying to get the story over with; so the movie definitely needed to be longer. What I think would of helped was if we had more backstory to each of the main characters (and not just the gang). Maybe some flashbacks at their childhoods, and growing up, and what eventually lead them to turn to a life of crime...and of course form as a group. As well as including more story to the others: what made Marmalade choose to act good but secretly be bad; why Luggins is so obsessed with The Bad Guys; and more on Diane and her life as a criminal before deciding to turn over a new leaf. Another missed opportunity...was Wolf and Diane. I mean, the chemistry between them is so obvious, but nothing is done about it. Hardly any flirting, and no kiss scene. Maybe if Diane gave Wolf a few winks or kiss blowing during her time as The Crimson Paw, or the gang teasing Wolf about his obvious crush on the vixens. I just wish there was a lot more done between these two. Come on, it was directed by a Frenchman - where's the romance?!
sam rockwell narrarted something i seriously loved on the hstory channel about the american about the battle of gettysburg i love sam rockwell he seriously is underrated
Mr Shark and his disguise gimmick sounds very similar to the character Sam Smith from 'Attack of the Killer Tomatoes'. Sam Smith is such an excellent master of disguise that another character genuinely mistakes him for Adolf Hitler, in spite of Smith being African American. They literally repeat the same joke in the sequel, only with Smith as Gaddafi.
It looks and sounds pretty interesting, though I'm annoyed about Awkwafina being in it... I also think it's extremely weird when there are anthro-animal characters in a mostly human-dominated setting like this.
i liked your tgwtg videos. Just found you back, I cant believe that you are still doing filmreviews as a hobby after all this time. i have a lot of videos to watch on your channel. Funny how time flies, still remember you in kickassia, with a lot of more hair.
Interesting review. Reading between the lines and picking up on the very subliminal notes, I get the impression you kinda liked the movie. ;) Just one thing: It's Awkwafina as in "awkward" and not Akwafina as in "Aquafresh."
finally got around to watching this on a plane trip. It was great but one thing i noticed was that a lot of this felt like Lupin the Third crossed with Pulp Fiction. But man, it was fun

Also, Awkwafina as Ms. Tarantula was herself in _Ocean’s 8_ so that’s something to note.

I'm very surprised nobody has referenced Castle of Cagliostro, I'm certain there is some influence in the bad guys.
I saw this movie yesterday (in 3D) and I never once noticed Diane’s eyebrow piercing…🙁

As a serious collector of Aloha shirts, I love that fox button up!

We all know you are a good guy, Matt, don't front.

Oh my crap, Matt Buck is BALDING!!
From the trailers I've seen it reminded me alot of Baby Driver as well.
Hi Mathew, do you think the filmmakers saw the car insurance ads with Harvey Keitel playing a Mr Winston Wolf and that was another inspiration?
Well, you've convinced me to watch this.
