  • In this video I have a look at a 2005 Lincoln Town Car that was dropped off with a complaint of overheating. The lady told me it started running hot when she was pulling a long hill. After letting the car sit for a while she was able to drive it to my shop. Sounds like a fan issue to me. Let's find out. -Enjoy!

500k+ on this Ex L of mine. Used for limo service and Uber since 2007. Still runs and looks good but, that wiring issue is chronic with Town Cars. The fan plug burns and causes the failure. I just ordered a new plug from Parts Geek. In the meantime I ripped the guts out of the control module and fashioned a manual switch to control the fan.

For the cut/strip/crimp pliers, search for "Vaco strip crimp". That should link to several other makes and styles. Vaco, Xcelite, Proto and other US firms have been making various styles for more than half a century, copied by many foreign firms into products sometimes of questionable quality. For the "DeOxIt", you can safely substitute a blast of WD-40 or a blob of petrolatum. The aim on new connections is to stop later oxidation, not reduce existing oxidation as there should be virtually none existing.
That Lincoln is a stout old girl.

One of tricks we did at the phone company on taping up wires is to start with the sticky side out and on the second pass we would flip to sticky side down. The the tape would two things, hold together tighter and if you had to remove it just cut it would peal off leaving no sticky black adhesive.
    Great video and fast troubleshooting.

When I was a kid, my Father always did parts business at NAPA. I don’t remember him having to deal with junk parts, but that was then and this is now. (Thank you China!)
It might be useful - especially for wanna be DIYers like myself - what other folks consider “rebranded junk”, that’s sold by major parts dealers.

The last of the simple to fix, reliable, American V8 sedans. I have one, I restored it as a hobby, and I love it. Parts are everywhere and cheap (the driver's door control module is a pain in the a$$, though). It's a joy to cruise the interstates with. Need a fuel pump/alternator/water pump....$100. Brake pads and rotors.....$250. The AC system is accessible under the hood....no tearing the dash out!!! The 4.6L 2 valve is stupid reliable, simple and cheap.
Look at the access space in front of the engine. The fan connector didn't require removing the heads and dropping the fuel tank to gain access.
My highest recommendation for car guys.

Glad she didn't Chernobyl the engine! Those are the last good modern cars still on the road - gotta keep 'em rollin'! And for the record, I'd have done the exact same fix! Probably better than the factory replacement anyway.
Just finished general maintenance on a '03 Crown Vic - got deja-vu here, except yours has more fancy plastic in the interior, lol. Mine is a cream puff - 62k miles, and zero rust anywhere. Well taken care of vehicle. Neighbor owned it, and sold it to one of my customers (she asked me what cars are good these days, after her last vehicle spent more time in my shop than on the road, so I told her she can't go wrong with a big ol' RWD FoMoCo product). Had just 32k on it a few years back when he sold it to her. So far just been leaks due to age vs. miles, and plastic interior parts breaking, oh, and of course, front end components, thanks to our crappy roads combined with 21st Century parts quality.
Lunch is over. Gotta go weld some galvanized steel to an old log splitter. Hope I can find my gas mask. Hey, it's snowing! 😁

Never put the window down because "up" might not work. Bad switch, bad connector, broken wire, motor turns one way but not the other, etc. Even with manual-crank windows - the regulator in my '65 Mustang broke a gear tooth, and still worked fine for "down" with gravity pulling on that big honkin' giant slab of glass, but "up" was another story - you had to physically lift the glass with one hand while cranking with the other.
