After the flop of The Marvels, Marvel Studios has come out with some of the best content that the MCU has seen since Endgame, with Loki Season 2. Tom Hiddleston returns as the popular Loki and has delivered perhaps the best MCU show to date. Marvel has had a pretty rough couple of years, but it seems a Disney Plus series has come to the rescue to counter the worst Marvel movie opening with The Marvels. We dive deep in this MArvel Video Essay, into why Loki is the best MCU show yet.

The Loom as a McGuffin was weak, and the explanation (it’s a failsafe) felt forced and lame. They hinted many things (OB’s memory was not erased, OB’s lab’s look = TVA lab’s look, Loki’s time slipping was fixed and then not fixed, Victor Timely = future Quantumania Kang or not , etc.) which they left haning w/o explaining or carrying forward.

What made this show different from other Marvel shows is that how Loki struggled to do things right but couldn't succeed. It was not about winning from a bad guy or something, it was just his struggle that, in the end, he couldn't overcome. He did absolutely everything that he could but still couldn't change anything and had to accept the thing in order to do the greater good. He just sacrificed himself to let others live.
    Great character development.

Late to the party but another brilliant video @movieoverload
I wonder if the brilliant production of the Loki series, particularly season 2, had anything to do with the fact that Tom Hiddleston was an executive producer. Apart from the combined effort of a team of creative and technical designers, sometimes when an actor wants to contribute behind the scenes aside from acting demonstrates the level of commitment Hiddleston wanted to give Loki the showcase of not only character growth but also cinematic dimensions in storytelling and world building. I could even recommend the Loki series to anyone who has not watched much Marvel content. This stand alone series has been glorious treat to watch. Well done to everyone who worked on the series!!

Anyways, apart from that, Loki s2 was great, one of the better stuff, Loki is one of my top five favorite Marvel characters.
Imma rate the season a 9/10. Victor’s next choices are questionable, but overall, good season 👍
Honestly cannot decide which season is better s1 or s2 bc they’re both good. Better than pretty much most of the Multiverse saga projects, only bc of Tom Hiddleston himself, who is perfect as Loki.

I think it's the best stuff they could do to save this MCU. Finally, REAL writers, a beautiful, inspired setting (retro-scifi lover's delight), great soundtrack, great actor performance... yes, many problems, particularly in the use of powers (as ever) and some episode's timing, but the emotional power and the quality of the script make me forgive that. I'm not sure if hoping for a 3rd season: the conclusion was sad, but extremely coherent and satisfying, with things closing in a symbolic circle; it would be a pity to ruin everything just for profict. I wish they really learned.

This ‘new version’ of Loki is all over the place in terms of appearance and personality. One minute he’s a panting, pathetic mouse (S2E1) a badass (S2E2) a simp (Most of S1, S2E3), a blank passive piece of cardboard (S1E6, S2E4) and just ‘too human.’ I miss the smart ass, magic using fun and *MISCHIEVOUS* Loki! He can be a ‘hero’ and still retain *some* of his personality traits that we all loved from the movies. In S1E1 he was still identifiable as Loki but then he gradually just turned into a mix of ‘Tom/Loki pretending to be one or the other.’ It’s weird. Who’s fault is this? The writers? Directors? Producers? *TOM?!* He knows this character so well and spent so much time, effort and passion in crafting and playing him I don’t think he’d ‘want’ to ruin what he claimed to be part of his own ‘glorious purpose.’ I believe in his passion I do. But it didn’t show on-screen very much apart from a few of the emotional scenes. Otherwise he was boring. I *KNOW* he’s a good actor and we got a glimpse of the ‘real’ Loki in the opening of S2E2 but then they (Disney?) made him put the brakes on and change direction again. Don’t let them make Loki boring, Tom *PLEEEASE!* He was so cool. Let him be *COOL!* 😩😫

I get what you're saying. I absolutely loved Loki as a villain; he was witty, mischievous, and his arrogance was charming in a way. The traits that made me love him were somewhat lost during his character development in the series. I understand that the series wanted to explore the "what makes a Loki a Loki" thing by 1) totally removing him out of his element 2) introducing other versions of Loki as variants 3) and re-evaluating what his glorious purpose is. Don't get me wrong, I loved how Loki realized his wrongs, turned himself around, and ultimately sacrificed himself for his friends (I ugly cried during the finale). I understand why he acted differently in the series, but I missed some of his old personality that made me like him from the beginning.
Now that Loki has reached full redemption (at least imo), I'd love to see a series/movie in the future where he's granted a second chance to actually live again and somehow not be stuck in Yggdrasil forever. I want more than anything to see Loki reunite with Thor, regain his mischievous and sassy self (of course without being evil), and don his ornate green/gold costumes like before. (Side note: I understand that his latest costume was supposed to be humble, but I wish it felt at least slightly more elaborate like his previous costumes now that he's reached god-tier mode).

Also, Loki's powers go from time slipping to freezing time and then all the way up to being able to birth and give life to infinite timelines? That is such a huge leap and was just dumb.
I still don't understand Kang's plan here with having Loki awaken his time powers. What was he trying to accomplish? He had everything with the TVA and the Sacred timeline. Plot is just too convoluted for its own good.
Also Loki just happened to leave the torture machine in the cell and no one bothered to remove that machine while they left the prisoners alone in the cell? Like that is just insane. Or like Sylvie just doesn't kill Ravonna and instead strands her there just for her to comeback. The General's death would have been more meaningful if they gave her any character development. They should have killed off Casey or someone else from the gang to get us more emotionally involved.

He served more as a watcher who makes sure his variants don't come back to start another war.

I WISH it was good but it made Loki a desperate clown unrelated to his own backstory, it didn't explore his character, but pushed the tell and not show that most Marvel projects suffer from. It said nothing about his relationship to Asgard, his real heritage and recent deal with Thanos, just made him go through the same worn out "Loki is bad, Loki sacrifices himself for atonement to prove he's changed," he's done it about four times now.
The worst offence was the amount of sympathy it gives towards the TVA, a fascist organisation designed to do nothing but kill trillions for one sacred timeline because it's stopping the one baddie that runs the place. There's literal gas chambers in use and Mobius is a friendly murderer because he's played by Owen Wilson. Its bargaining to call it the best, trying to give something a token award because it was "attempting to tell a story" but it's sordid in isolation when compared to other meaningful stories out there, and its unconnected to the multiverse lore it sets up for Marvel as none of the projects can come together in agreement for what that is.
If I had to go with one decent MCU show it would be Moon Knight since it's a stand alone series and it achieved the goal of telling a story of self acceptance it wanted to do from episode one.

... I mean, they literally speak about the TVA in the second season as you described it. They want to change it, but there are problems they need to tackle. I personally would have liked it if they explored different factions inside the TVA at the beginning of season 2.

@@Neropol14 How exactly can you change the TVA though, it's designed to kill people and strip freewill, that's always been its function. Why would anyone want to keep the namesake and try to defend it.
Every single person within the TVA have held the belief that murdering for an infinite amount of time was a good thing. It would have been better to completely dismantle it and never allow that amount of unregulated power ever again. Instead the TVA gets glorified for its deeds of ending many universes to save basically just one and continue to hold power. None of the agents hold any true remorse for murder because the fantasy world building justifies it.
Loki sacrifices himself for the TVA because they're his friends and magic gives an easy solution. The writing is determined to get us to side with the genocidal organisation and think they're more complicated, but we really shouldn't be doing that.

Well, he was learning not to be so arrogant in season 1, but I did like the few moments of fun he had (like when he interrogated the guy alone) I also love that he used his magic way more than in any other MCU appearance in this one. I always missed the magical element in the movies. So in episode three when he goes all magic I went "finally!!" I do like him arrogant and mischievous, it might have been nice they kept some of that, the flair did come back a bit during the time loop, but yeah, they focused a lot on the redemption aspect, I guess.

Same! This ‘Loki’ (Noki) is just another character. Nothing ‘Loki’ about him. This show is slow, silly and drab af besides that! Nothing much ‘Marvel’ about it. There are some legitimately clever things in it but it didn’t do the character any favours for fans who liked him best in the films.

Saying that it's the best MCU show is not saying much lmao it's pretty bad. I can't even get through the first episode, it's really boring and something about Loki being the hero is really weird. They didn't really give a decent enough character arc for him to suddenly be all out a nice normal guy. I watched some of the final episode and it also did a bad job in pulling me in. The Marvel universe needs to be put down for a long time before revisiting, there are great stories that already exist in the comic universe but for some reason Disney cannot just refuses to make faithful retellings of already loved stories. Loki as a show is fine if you're sick at home and can't be bothered to find something better to watch, besides that it's rough to sit through.

"Loki being the hero is really weird" he played the "hero" role in Thor the Dark World in avenging his mother's death at Malekith's hands, in Thor Ragnarök, he helped Thor in leaving Sakar and defeating Hela by reviving Surtr, and of course in Infinity War, Loki sacrifice to save Thor from Thanos and the Black Order

Loki is the second best for sure.
Falcon/WS is by far the best Disnazi+ show, tho. It's criminally underrated, but everyone sucks the WS movies dick. It's literally that, but a show, with a better villain. Y'all crazy.

I like falcon and winter soldier too. Very underrated but still big with flaws I think. And I definitely would say Loki is better imo. But falcon and winter soldier I would put second best it was definitely better than Wandavision and Hawkeye which were the only either two decent shows they made. The rest has mostly been mid/shit completely
