2011 Vivaro Trafic Primastar 2.0 dci, not starting fault caused by immobiliser transponder fault,

  • I’ve seen this fault a few times now, so I thought I’d do a quick video describing the fault and an easy step to help diagnose it.
    This was a 2011 Vauxhall Vivaro 2.0 Dci, the customer complained of an increasing difficulty in starting the engine, with a continuous turning over fault, until it eventually would fire up. Up until the fault develop into an altogether non-start fault.
    First thing I checked was the fuel level and for fuel contamination. Then I checked for fault codes of which there were no relevant codes using a generic scan tool.
    I removed the cowling around the steering wheel, carefully removed the transponder ring, I took the board out of the key and held the transposed chip to the inside of the ring, after a few attempts the van started and ran fine, once I found the ‘sweet spot’ I could get it to start near enough every time.
    The fault was rectified by hiring a local Auto locksmith who has the correct equipment to code a new key.

    You are amazing, thank you so much for this video. Van was sitting outside for weeks and previously with the mechanics for more than two weeks, nobody was able to work out what the issue is but after watching your video I tried this and it started straight away. 👍👍👍

    My immobiliser light never flashes or comes on. I didn't think that was correct? I have a crank and no start fault. Do they normally illuminate and blink when key is out of ignition?
    Im thinking it's not the transponder in this case but maybe the bcm? Thank you for uploading your video. Very helpful.

    My 2.5 is doing a similar thing.. my stop light and the red dot 🔴 won’t go out and it will just turn over.. or the red dot will go out and will still just turn over till the stop light goes out. Then when playing around enough it will go out and start but then juudder and cut out down the road or will cut out after about 10 seconds.. or will run for a while then start the issue again. Would you say this could be the same issue or the barrel itself?

    I have a 2016 vivaro, im having problems like this when starting it up everyday... I have changed the mass air flow sensor and air temp sensor and its costing lots at the garages. How do I check the transponder unit on my van as its slightly newer, will it be the same way as the video?
