Yay Saudi money!
Great to see something interesting and new from IFSC. The format needs a bit of refinement, but I think it allows the athletes to show their true athletic potential, not just their route reading abilities. This could have the potential to push the climbing and routesetting even further and showcase other great climbers who don't thrive in the normal comp format. Glad ifsc is willing to try new things
Never heard of the city Neom, until now but from what I've discovered from reading about it online sounds horrible. Saudi Arabia has very violently forced native people of the are to move away before constructing this ''megaproject'' city on their lands. I dont think IFSC should collaborate with harmful projects like this.
SURE this isn't a paid post by some of their enemies. Funded through shell companies to a final European company which has outsourced it to Asians. Great margins, probably a group of ex intelligence founders. Good margins eh. Needs more subtlety tho.
Saying Ritsu is 17 is one thing. Saying he was Born in 2006 hits a little different though.
The format they’re using is so cool. Gives the climbers time to recover and decide on a good beta before giving it another go.
It halves the number of possible tries.
@@dakiblabla No they get 2 separated 2 minute blocks I think. 4 minutes total still.
@@deciYes, I know. The fact that the interval is cut in two removes the (crucial) attempts that would have extended over the 2min mark.
@dakiblabla I'd argue the better rested athlete will have a much better attempt in the first min of the 2nd interval than the last 2 mins of a 4min period. This 2 x 2 min intervals isnt perfect, but it does have its own interesting strategies and viewing tension
@@dakiblabla half? exaggeration.
Seems like a different format but they don’t seem to explain it! Video just starts already into the stream. Seems like they get 2minutes to do the problem but get to watch each other climb the problems (and/or have pre knowledge and beta).
Very interesting…goes much quicker which is nice but its a strange rapid fire format that feels a bit tiring 😅
The event is in the middle of the desert with everyone sleeping in tents. 😳 Onlookers are limited and had to get bussed in. The athletes in semi are a very weird mishmash of levels...Feels like when the golf league got another overseas league going 😬.
What the heck kind of event is this? 😂
This is what happens when oil billionaires attempt to fabricate tourist-attracting infrastructure overnight, probably with what is basically slave labor. Everything just feels slightly... off?
Seems like a „The saudis payed a lot of money“ kind of event
Actually I think they get 2 minutes. Then they sit around while everyone else tries (and they can watch), then they get another 2 minutes to try again if they didn't send the first time.
I'm confused about the purpose of this comp.
Really? $
So we are selling out like the fifa now? No offense towards the athlets but the IFSC is realy working towards a reputation of all the shity organizations that are only after the money.
Looking forwards to the next world champion chips in Pyongyang...
As someone who's been climbing for 12 years, only recently started watching IFSC lead and boulder. What did the IFSC do to make you feel like they're selling out only for the money? Do you not like the new format?
@@1uc123 This pointless comp in the middle of the desert, obviously mainly paid for by the saudis
@@1uc123 Just that Saudi-Arabia is not the best country in terms of human rights
@@CrookedGrandmawhat does it have to do with IFSC?
Isn't just a sports organization?
@@mojixcoder Saudi-Arabia are trying to improve their public image, and most likely has paid the IFSC a lot of money to host this event here. Look up the term 'sportswashing'. So the IFSC has a moral choice to accept that offer or not. But I also understand they might simply need the money.
Coachella for climbing
medji never actually put his foot on that 3rd boulder problem with the big blue half globes and iron cross stlye finish..i am not sure if anyone else noticed that..i wonder how often stuff like that goes without being noticed..having his foot on or off of that start wouldnt dictate if he could still climb the boulder but i know the judges can be super strict sometimes about that stuff so im shocked they didnt flag him down..
Do you have a timestamp?
I gather you mean that he didn't start properly?
At 34:04 you can see him tap his left foot on the bottom of the starting volume.
I'm shocked at your comment
Aside from the goofy format with no explanation... it's really strange having a whole round of bouldering just to eliminate 2 competitors.
I like the format with the break but I agree, all that to eliminate two competitors was silly.
Wow that backdrop looks incredible...
Edit: He literally makes a comment about it right after I typed that lmao
Boulders seem to favor taller climbers
13:06 what kind of insane tension does he need to execute this?
ew saudi arabia
Wow NEOM is actually a thing?
Its incredibly dumb but I think its under construction
@@horsesfalling I'm watching through the recording rn. Sounded like they made all the staffs slept in tents 😅😅😅

Wouldn’t it be amazing if they actually used the wall behind the wall? Figure out a way of labelling real rock walls with “these holds only”, etc to create unique routes for the comp out of real rock
Actually the first comps were like this, back in the 80ies. They didn't have artificial walls.
It's not a good idea. Makes it almost impossible to score in practice.
I think the talibans paid enough IFCS would organise a comp! It's all for the benefit of the sport, right?
29:25 I'm guessing the Japanese climbing association said you can go, and get paid, but you are not representing our country 👍
As soon as my broken toe heals I am going straight to the bouldering gym.
This is crazy.... in the background, there is an amazing crag, and these competitors are climbing on an artificial wall...
Matt mentioned that at least the organizers are organizing an outdoor climbing event in the next few days with some of the climbers! Looks like some sick offwidth trad lines when they panned in!
did u even listen the commentators, they mentioned it’s too chalky and will break
