For the sketch Carve, to remove border, create a close vector of the image without the border. Then instead of model Boundary, select "select Vector". That should remove boundary. Great demo, still going through it.
You must be in the 3d view to remove the border. If you go to Making Jewelry tray with Sketch Carving about 6 minutes and 15 seconds, it is covered there.
