I love him. He’s depressed as hell, but trying to have fun. These songs he wrote carried him and his band did too, he was trying. Shame on any shame people toss around. This video has helped me a lot
Never posted a comment on RUclips, but I felt like I had to for this clip. T.H. is absolutely correct, I was there as well and the show - at least for MEC standards, never got off the ground. After seeing him back in the States several times during the switchover to MEC, I was really looking forward to this show with great anticipation. As an American living in Copenhagen at the time, I sensed the band was simply homesick. End of August, Malmo was bleak, the weather was almost Novemberish outside. Not really sure if this film picks it up, but much of the problem stemmed from the poor vibe between the crowd and band. It started with the opening band, can't remember the name, but they were this sort of cowpunk outfit with a deep satirical streak, dressed up as a bunch of "hayseeds". Not sure if the crowd really got it, but Jason Molina loved it, after the end of every song yelling something like " Awwww shittttt" in amazement, urging them on, giving them support which was not coming from the crowd. From that point, there was quite a few tense asides between the band and crowd and the show never took off. It felt MEC wanted to be anywhere but at the venue. Yea, maybe JM was doing a Neil Young Impression circa Tonight's the Night with the sunglasses, but there was little passion or bravura to it, quite unlike his earlier performances I was lucky to witness. Looking back at it now, can't help feelin sad about that evening. But still, Jason Molina took the baton from Townes Van Zandt and still stands as one of the best American songwriters. Thank you kindly.
Seems that most of you don’t know Molina’s life, you don’t realize this is one of the last performances before he had to quit and started going in and out of hospitals and rehab, shortly after this he was vomiting up blood and hes a few years from death in this video. He is clearly intoxicated, as a matter of fact he spent this entire tour “drinking, passing out, waking up and drinking, then passing out again.” As stated by a band mate. If you want to hear his voice in his younger years then go listen to a different video. This is for us hardcore fans who want to see his last moments, drunk and embarrassing or not. This man was mentally ill and he self medicated with alcohol, he died because he could no longer afford medical bills and was forced to stop treatment, causing the fatal relapse. Show some fucking respect here and do your research. Peace.
You are a jerk. Not everyone knows Jason's demise like you. People struggle & it doesn't show Immediately. Many alcoholics like me try to cover it up. You should stop being such a perfect person & try jiving more with the Electric Magnolia life..
I really enjoy pretty much all of Molina's catalog across Songs:Ohia and MEC, but Jason Groth joining the fold was really the missing cog that took them to the next level. I honestly think he's as much a part of the MEC sound as Molina, and his tone is fantastic here as well. Jason was having a tough night vocally, but that lead guitar tone is taking up the slack.
That's comparable to Townes Van Zandt. an absolute genius who left our realm all too soon and Instead of praise and accolades, died broke, and quietly.
Got drunk and had nowhere else to go. I'm not kidding.I already talked to everybody tonight who's supposed to be in love with me. I came to this song like a magnet I never met this guy but he is a major force in my love and my love my life I was trying to save my life my life speech-to-text ain't always the right way to go saw that made pretty good lyric right say my lover my life which way do we go? Pretty dark right ? It is.... Save My Love or My Life ... I would never thought of this without Jason.... I'm going to send this song to my next dead chick. They tried but they couldn't handle it. Being married to me is such a chore. But you got killed in the end. Not by me. What up more. Keep trying anyhow I just keep trying to just keep working. Just keep working. All the seasons come and go. No water flow or it does not flow. I know a new season is coming in. I need it bad. Jason my friend. Told me that the new season is going to come in whispering whispering to me I know she's looking at me from right around the corner she's pretty shy but she's pretty cute.
As you say, it looks to me like a Telecaster Deluxe. I used to have one in the late '70s - two humbuckers, big-head Strat-style neck, Gibson-like controls. Fabulous guitar, especially the neck. Wish I still had it! It appears this guy has replaced the large Fender humbuckers pickups with Gibson-type pickups.
The band sounds great. So does Molina. He may have had some monitoring issues. But so what? Is this how some judge art, whether the singer is pitch perfect on every note? If that's what you are listening for you are missing the point.
David Comdico He's definitely inebriated, but he doesn't sound too bad. I find it sad to watch, though, knowing this was pretty much where his career derailed
@@andrewptobhe’s completely drunk. That the muscles still work at that point is psychologically, not genius. The genius is that could still do it this good in that state. The songs were that much a part of him. But so was his disease
Gotta say, musically they are intriguing but vocally very weak..maybe an acquired taste. He is not a Neil Young type vocalist, he is just can't sing in tune ... what am I missing here.
+Tricko it sounds like he was having problems with his voice which can happen when you drink a lot and tour a lot.... just look at some of his other live performances (especially solo) and you'll see the same songs sung perfectly.
+Tricko in fact, was in 2009 when the band stopped all shows because of molina's issues... you can look other videos, like "recording Josephine" and gonna see the diference.
You’re missing any and all knowledge of Jason molinas functional artistic capacity and the toll disease took upon him, as well as the cognizance of how great he is even nonfunctional d/t alcohol. Read more about music, maybe you’ll get it then
@@pcblahblah94 you are spot on. even as his issues plagued him, he never lost his ability to amaze and impress. I had rather listen to Jason having a bad night than anything else.
I agree, Tricko, his singing is pretty rough here. But Ive been listening to him for so many years I hear through it. I havent listened to this concert before and Im thankful I found it:) This man has an amazing back catalog, I hope you didnt give up because of this one rough show!

Im 62.. just found out about Jason and I am enthralled!!!
hell yeah Randall!! always great seeing others find his work. amazing songwriter
I just found out about your mom and am also enthralled, even though she's barely kicking
I'm 52 but everything else you said. He's incredible.
Congrats
Yes, me too I'm 61.5 just discovered Jason 💔 WTF
Every moment of every day youre missed, Jason.
Wonderful gig..
Thank you so much. A fantastic talent, lost way too soon. Beautiful to watch. Tragic to know that his last live performance was just months later.
Jason West Maybe things happen at the right time for the right reason. Nonetheless, RIP.

Kid!? Weirdo.

it's strange how carries over so well. it sounds so good! its crispy. sounds awesome.
They sound great. I think maybe you were projecting a feeling that MEC did not share.
they sucked at this gig, if you can´t hear that, you suck aswell.
I totally agree, Jason is all over the place with his voice and his timing is off. The band sounds good though, but all togjter not as good as before.
The on-stage audio level problems didn't help though. He never got comfortable from the off.

Great upload thank you this was the era I first discovered his music

Oh god, I do miss this guy...
Phantastic concert, I feel so sad cause I never saw the band.
InConcert RüCo me too :(

it is excellent to be good show and enjoyment for everyone who watch!! Terrific!! olympic champion!
it is mind blowing. from the very start. fucking wow
It's hard to believe he/they didn't become a huge international act, but instead, he died broke and desperate. Talent doesn't always = success.
rob napz :(

yes, and unfortunately his alcoholism was uncontrollable and ultimately got the best of him, way too young.
@@georgemoore8832 Very apt comparison!
He's Like Van Gogh. An truly beautiful human being. Seems we can't cope with them.
I love this band.
woah this is mind-blowing
I'd give anything to have met Mr. Molina. What a wonderful musician. His music touches me so much.
9:00 great lead
This is quite stunning.

Pete on drums!
JMo was drunk as hell there. Sad to see it, this was one of his last live performances. Still, as good as ever. Band was so tight.
It's the last video recorded iirc
I think his voice is fucking perfect.
Love this !
molina looks like the blind guy that larry david helps move in CURB with those shades on
rip.
ah sweetness
This show has now been posted in 1080p directly from the original files. ruclips.net/video/O_S6nzXeLFE/видео.html
good stuff. who is the lead guitar player?
Jason Groth
💜
What kind of guitar is the guitarist playing? Man I loved these guys, so sad.
+Jeff Dono some kind of Tele Deluxe. dude only plays that guitar in every band he's in.
Telecaster body, Strat neck, Pick-up switch way up top (ala Les Paul), Humbucker in the bridge & also neck position

Jeff James lo
I really love jason molina, but I do feel like he was not performing his best here. His band was on point though.
He seemed drunk to me.

Porn stache was badass. Sealed the deal. I was just too late.
JASON EVANS-GROTH!!!! that's right yall
jason evans-groth is the north star of MEC cmon
Jason looks frustrated and trying to move the show along/babysit.
I can't help thinking if Jason had had a slightly more sensitive guitar player to go along with him things might have been different.
Beautiful show from the grenade-attack capitol of Europe
his voice kinda sucks the whole set...
Cool comment
