Just heard it live on BBC… I cannot even begin to express… it was even more stupendous than Verbier… I don’t know how he makes the piano sound the way it does only when he plays it, somehow every time feels new, it’s like an invitation from him, saying “come and sit next to the piano” and takes you on a total and natural immersion into a brand new experience…every second I was sooooo wishing we can all view it and not just hear it. .. the BBC host was also elated with excitement, the orchestra leader elaborated his playing emits total confidence and comfort and how new elements were introduced, how he enjoyed working with him. Yunchan is truly a gift to the world. Message to those who haven’t discovered classical music yet: I wish you will discover it soon with this incredible artist; it will enrich your life. Congratulations, Yunchan, for an unforgettable debut at the Proms. Thank you for posting this rehearsal clip, might play it in a loop without sound and turn on replay audio on BBC 😂

I was in the audience tonight. His musicianship cannot be faulted, but he looked bored and not wanting to be there. He struggles to look at the audience when taking applause, his bows were as short as possible, he races on and off the stage. The Bach encore has been repeated many times by him already. Maybe he was just tired, as it was the exact same performance he did at Verbier a day or two ago. Whether you like it or not, nowadays classical performers need to have media- and audience- presence (e.g. Ray Chen) but Yunchan, despite having performed all over the world at top venues over the past three years, does not. Sad to say, but I wonder if we’ll still be hearing about him in a decade’s time?
I deeply appreciate your concern for Yun chan Lim. But I think that he will be one of the greatest pianists in the world in this century. His performance raises up my spirit. That 's all I want. I think that all aspect of his action needs not to be perfect, it is his personality. Hope to look at him with a warm look.😊
@@keving331 I appreciate where you’re coming from and understand your perspective as an audience member and thoughts about his future. If he were a typical “star of the moment” it would be natural to expect him to fully embrace the incoming attention and accolades. I find myself yearning for him to take the applause longer and show more of his graceful smile. But I think it’s just who he is. Yunchan is different and certainly not typical. He is unique and special 🙂 but doesn’t live in a bubble either. He is actually very self-aware about this aspect (feeling a bit uncomfortable to make him scurry off the stage), and has admitted to feeling awkward receiving all the applause after a performance because (I’m paraphrasing what was said in an interview) he feels he’s not one to deserves it. He’s known for his humility and selflessness. To him, it’s about the music. His performance is a presentation of the music and composer, not of himself. I believe it’s part of the reason why he gets so immersed in the pieces he plays. This is genuine and sincere. There’s no showmanship or over-expression. which is consistent with taking short and quick bows. But I too wish to see him stay on stage a little longer so that people can show their appreciation for what they just heard… I hope someday he’ll know what great joy the audience gets from applauding and standing for the performer as well as from the music itself. His encore choices are not look-at-me show-off pieces but seem to be thoughtfully chosen to fit the overall performance..here after the imperial, commanding Beethoven 5, a soft poetic melodic Bach fits in beautifully (and he doesn’t just play it, even though he has played it before, I really enjoyed hearing its nuances I had not heard before); also I wouldn’t be surprised if Beethoven’s deep respect for Bach didn’t play a role in his choice. IMHO ☺️. My only regret is that my wish for a second encore didn’t come true. In regards to his social media presence and career path, he is also very aware of the industry and mindful of how the focus can quickly shift when the next big winner of a major competition emerges. But he stays true to himself. His natural motivation for playing music is not fame and fortune, but his love for and devotion to music, which are profound and he wants to share it. Foreseeing his consistent presence in hectic tour schedules for the next 10 (consecutive) years may actually be optimistic as he has expressed his wish to take a break at some point to work on complete works of Beethoven and Mozart Sonatas. I think he has said even if he lived multiple lifetimes, there won’t be enough time to study all the music he wants to add to his repertoire. The staggering demand for him right now comes at a tricky part of his life, being so young. His immense hunger for continued development as an artist is undeniable, and deciding what he will focus on and perhaps sacrifice (public career vs. musical development), and when to do so, I imagine would not be easy and it’ll be up to him. As for whether the audience somehow loses sight of him and pivots their attention to the next new shiny object, it’ll be up to them. No matter what, he will always be devoted to his music, and his true followers will always be devoted to the incredible artist that he is and will stand by him. He is just too precious for us not to.
