I just picked up my first banjo two days ago and have been racking my head through books trying to figure out how to read and play my first instrument. This video clicked something in my head and I was able to play my first rift thanks to you! Your simple breakdown on the finger positioning is great!
Thanks Jim! I just bought my first banjo yesterday and started working on this pattern. I feel like I've got a pretty good handle on it and love the banjo already
I wish there were more guys like you, which is right down to the point. Most only want to talk for, say, 15 mins and then a one - or two minute deal like you just gave. I think a lot of beginners like myself are thirsty for the "jumping right in" video like you just gave. I generally will start looking elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that most of the theory guys are giving out great information, but for the beginners, keep it simple and dive right in. For that reason only I will definitely be subscribing to your channel. Thank you, sir, for what you do...
I was a professional drummer for 30 years, but I always picked a little guitar. I just picked up my first banjo and it’s coming along naturally. Thanks for this video
I got a really nice banjo for my 21st birthday because I really wanted to learn. Here I am 27, grabbing my banjo off the wall for the 2nd time in 6 years, trying to tune it.
Well, after years and years of loving the sound of the banjo, I'm getting one from my wife for Christmas! Given I'm paying for it, I of course saw it delivered today and I've now got to painfully wait until the 25th! Have to say Jim I'm loving your channel and the way you explain things. Subscribed and can't wait to go on my journey and follow your tutorials!!
Been playing bass and rhythm guitar fior 25 years, but banjo is a different beast I just picked up. Your calm, friendly demeanor is perfect. Once I get comfortable with this first roll. I'm in for all your lessons. Liked and subscribed!
THANK YOU I just took this thing out of the box two days ago that was the most useful thing I have seen so far! Although I'm going to play the banjo my way anyway I want to learn how other people other folks play with it 😊
I turn 35 tomorrow and have never played an instrument. Now that I'm living in the countryside, it only feels right that I should learn to play the banjo. My brain hurts now- I'm not used to this, but it's a good start. Thanks!
I would like to play a banjo but I had an injury to my left wrist. So I am trying a dulcimer. But I can tell that you would be an excellent teacher. ❤ from West Virginia
Awesome bud. I've never picked a banjo up till last week I've figured out foggy mt break down the guitar rhythm on it mabe you can show me how to row on it. Great video 2thumbs up thank you for sharing...😊
Bro please please please keep making content, I have an 800 dollar banjo that I've had for ten years and never learned to play, but I'll make you a promise, if you keep posting content I'll write you a song.
I picked up the three finger roll style of picking when I was 6 or 7, and in my young mind, the thumb string was made to be played by the thumb, and by the same reasoning, the thumb was meant to play the thumb string. I never drop my thumb down into what I call the playing part of the keyboard.
@@JimPankey I've been dragging my thumb on the thumb string, and letting my index and middle fingers handle the bottom four for at least 60 years, so I guess I'll leave the exploring to the young folks.
I've always wanted to play a Banjo, New Subscriber and we hit the bell 😊 is there a special sort for a beginner?? Watching from Cradle Mountain Tasmania Australia here😊 Cheers 🍺🍻KC 🇦🇺🇦🇺🤝😎✌👍
Bought a banjo two days ago... after faffing with tuning i was ready to have a go... you were my first actual lesson and this was my first actual pattern... thank you. I do need a shorter thumb pick tho... its so long I keep getting it caught but it was like a standard size. I do have a question.. when you're not using it do you leave your bridge in place or do you loosen and retune every time?
thinking of getting a banjo, you think I should? I am a beginner to instruments in general besides like the digeridoo lol but I have wanted to learn the banjo but unsure if it would be too difficult
Feels more natural and much easier to use my index finger on strings 3 and 2 and my thumb on 5 and middle finger on 1. Is there a reason why I need to use my thumb on string 3 Jim? Thanks.
I've been practicing rolls for a little bit. What is the goal? Will I eventually naturally be able to switch between rolls. Should I do one roll for the entirety of a song? Should I learn a song suggested rolls through tabs. I'm confused how to use the rolls I learn! 😭🤦♂️
Hi there! I just got a banjo for christmas, and i wanted to get some banjo picks and a strap is there any brand or site you could recomend? P.S. Have a nice day!
First off, thank you so much for being so generous to help us newbies!Been following your lessons since I started playing almost 3 ,years ago.I have a question, is it better to learn/practice 1 song at a time till it's near perfect or is it more beneficial to learn a few at once ?
Even now, I tend to focus more on skills. I’ve never been one to really memorize much of anything. You’ll have to decide what your goal is, but I figure like this: if it’s your goal to memorize then, yes, it might be better to work on one until you’ve got it. If you’re more interested in figuring out tunes improvisationally, then might be fun to work on multiple tunes, but focusing on concepts.

It's going good but not ready to post a video just yet. Have a couple kinks to work out. Struggling a little with chording smoothly.
This was right on time, i’m gonna pick up my banjo again - Thanks Jim!

Picked up my first banjo this afternoon. After 2 hours I can almost play this with an alternating roll style I added just for fun. Thanks Jim!
Have fun!

It’s a sign that you need a banjo. 😅
I just got a banjo and dude go get a banjo it’s so much fun even if you’re horrible like me

Good to know which fingers go in which string.
Well, it’s not as simple as that. Fingers can hit different strings. None have a particular assignment.

www.bryanhooper.com for your strap.

Im thinking of buying a banjo instead of en electric guitar, where do you guys suggest looking for a banjo?
Alternating roll. Forward roll coming next.

Is 6 strings hard to learn and what is the difference?
A six string banjo is typically played like a guitar.
@@JimPankey ah okay. That's not for me😁 thank you
What does the little g and big G mean?
It’s a common way of indicating tuning for the banjo. The little g represents the fifth string and it’s an octave higher than the third string.
@JimPankey ohh thank you 💓🫡
I'm Autistic, was wondering on the neck strings, do I press my fingers lightly or firmly on those strings?
Just firmly enough to sound the note clearly
Can you play banjaw in my singing monsters?
