Speed Queen Gas Dryer Error Codes & Problems.

  • A video I wish I didn't have to record, but it was inevitable. Three times now, the dryer has been giving an error code of "Er, CO".
    I have a feeling why this has been happening, and I feel it can be made to not happen. I will explain it in the video.
    This error code (among others) will NOT be found in the owners manual. At the end of the video I will show an image of the chart which actually shows all possible codes. You can reference this as much as you want.

    How long is the actual duct? If it is more than 10 feet or has more than 180 of bends, you will need a booster fan. If this was a mechanical control dryer, it will most likely cause other problems.

    • @Sharkie626
      @Sharkie626  6 лет назад

      The duct is very short. It's connected right behind the dryer, and goes right outside the wall to the right side of the dryer. The duct only has one 90 degree bend as far as I know. I'm assuming there's no bends in the back wall before it goes outside. That being said, maybe I'll ask the guy just to check it when he's doing the work on the dryer. A little reassurance can be a good thing.

    [in Russian accent that sounds nothing at all like JayKay18] I do experiment for you! Currently, ours is drying a load of towels on auto/high heat with a temperature sensor at the control board. You got me curious how hot they actually get during operation. I know these boards are rated for 90c and 120c, depending on the revision code of the board (194f and 248f, respectively,) as SQ has used that same mounting location for decades for their controllers. (not to mention circuit boards on ovens, ranges, under the hoods of cars, etc.) I ran the dryer for a few minutes with the cover off and my hand on the controller (carefully of course,) before I put the temperature sensor in and close it back up, and I never even felt heat at all, just the movement of cool air. This, of course, is using a run of about 9'ish feet of aluminum dryer vent with no restriction on the outside. I'm wondering if you just got a bad board in your unit.

    • @Sharkie626
      @Sharkie626  6 лет назад

      Oh great! Glad you of all commented, since you and Spats were the first ones I saw with these laundry machines and I was wondering if you encountered any similar issues.
      Wow they are rated that high?? I sure wasn’t expecting that and I actually didn’t know just how long the boards were placed in that location. But I had completely forgot about boards in ovens and ranges as you said. I had figured they just had some thick insulation or something. Nice work with the temperature sensor. You guys know a lot more about electrical work than I do. The duct here is nice and short, and the outside vent is one of the things I also checked. So I think I checked all the simple stuff that I could have.
      It could simply just be a bad board like you said. It would be rather good if it’s just that, as I do know that happens sometimes. The washer on the other hand hasn’t missed a beat. I do miss having a warm rinse, but with the results it gives me, I can’t really complain.

    • @HarleyBadger
      @HarleyBadger 6 лет назад

      I hear ya! I finished filming, I ended up running the load for 30 minutes with the temp sensor inside, and I literally put my hand almost in the burner to demonstrate LOL... Once Apple agrees to let me successfully copy the video files over, I'll edit and send you the link later on. With the cover closed, the temperature at the control board reached 94F. I opened the cover and let it keep running, and used my infrared thermometer around the controller, got readings of 78 to 94 degrees with it. I also stuck an actual probe thermometer into the heart of the controller (and oops, forgot and left it inside!) and also got 94 degrees, fortunately less than half the temp required to cause any damage. Oh and I figured out the lower panel, it's actually in direct contact with the plenum that the lint filter sits in, that's why the lower panel gets really hot. The metal inside around the controller is actually legit cool to the touch at all times.

    • @Sharkie626
      @Sharkie626  6 лет назад

      Cool! Look forward to the link!
      Wow only 94? I really need to buy myself an infrared thermometer or something. Yeah the panel is right by that lint filter housing, so that is indeed part of it. But yeah if that all holds true, then it could just be a bad board.
      I guess we shall see what happens once the work is done!

    Hi there I have that same dryer only the electric version I also dry towels on high heat never an issue. May I ask a question, does your exhaust have any restrictions? Mine exhausts out the wall adjacent to the dryer. I’m sure you are using the shortest connection to exhaust the hot air and not soft tubing. Just thought I would share my views.

    • @Sharkie626
      @Sharkie626  6 лет назад

      I think the electric dryers will be more forgiving, because the heating coils are in the back of the dryer inside the duct, and not at the bottom near the front like the gas burner is.
      The exhaust was one of the first things I checked. I checked the lint filter, the area past the netting and the outside exhaust vent. All nice and clear. The exhaust duct is nice and short compared to the other house, so that will make it much easier to clean out, should it ever need it.

    I have the 9 series too. MY dryer has a different issue. If I use sensing on heavy-duty the dryer will count down to the 10 minute time and it will stick there and the sense still says the clothes are wet and they are well dry and HOT. I think I am out of warranty. dryer shows no error codes

    One feature Kenmore gas dryers had in the 1960's was a variable burner. How it worked was when the cycling thermostat cycled, instead of turning the burner off it literally turned down the burner like you would turn down a gas stove burner. The higher end Kenmore electric dryers did something similar, but there was two heating elements, and how it worked was when the cycling thermostat cycled, it would turn off one heating element, and the other heating element would stay on. If you were to select the low heat setting, it would just turn on one heating element. Dryers back then actually had a true low heat setting.

    • @Sharkie626
      @Sharkie626  6 лет назад

      That's an interesting way of going about it. Nowadays cycling thermostats have a little heater coil in them that will make it think the dryer is hotter than it actually is, and that's now the different temperatures work. Not a bad design though, the 1990 Whirlpool dryer hasn't had a problem with it for over 20 years now.
      I'm not a fan of variable gas valves (especially these days). It just means more electronics. Same reason why I am glad we have the furnaces and air conditioners that we do. They are strictly on or off. No variable gas valves or speeds.

    • @seana806
      @seana806 6 лет назад

      Those Kenmore gas dryers in the 1960's had a variable gas valve, but it was mechanical. The electric versions just had two heating element that one was either on, or both were on. One interesting thing about my Lady Kenmore portable dryer is you can hear the high limit thermostat click on and off, and I always clean the lint filter after each load, and there is a cycling thermostat near the blower. It drys just fine, but I find it strange how the high limit thermostat basically cycles, and the cycling thermostat really doesn't do anything at all.

    • @Sharkie626
      @Sharkie626  6 лет назад

      That is kinda weird indeed.

    • @seana806
      @seana806 6 лет назад

      I find it strange how the high limit thermostat basically cycles. Maybe someone at some point replaced the thermostats at some point, and did not put the thermostats in the correct places? Or maybe the cycling thermostat is only used for the permanent press cycle? I've used the permanent press cycle before, and there were a couple of damp spots on my clothes, and I dried them for about 60 minutes. Could be for the permanent press cycle.

      The burner btu since it is so close to the circuit board should be 18,000 btus, not 22,000 btus. The Maytag Halo Of Heat gas dryers had a 18,000 btu burner since it was close to the dryer drum/seal.

  • @mrb627

    Don't think it's a design problem with the board placement. Remember, that area underneath the cylinder is operating in a vacuum. I would be surprised if it approached 100 degrees at best. I suspect a bad connection in a wiring harness or a bad board altogether.

    • @Sharkie626
      @Sharkie626  6 лет назад

      Another user made a video for me and showed how hot his dryer got down there, and it was only 94 degrees, to my surprise. Replacement boards are already in the works, so we shall see how things go when that happens.

    I've said it before, and I'll say it again: This seals the deal. I REFUSE to own a machine with electronic controls. Error codes are the same as the dreaded Check Engine light. A huge annoyance that's only going to cost money.
    Mechanical controls, no worries. There are no error codes, it just won't work. Then you whip out that nifty paper, follow the wiring diagram, and test the components with a multimeter, which only takes a couple of minutes. The Buick has no computer, doesn't need a computer, and doesn't want one either, yet it runs just peachy keen now doesn't it. It doesn't have an oil light, it has a gauge. It will not alert you to low oil pressure, that's MY responsibility to monitor, and I monitor that gauge every time I glance at the dashboard to check my speed. I'll also glance at the temperature gauge, fuel gauge, and ammeter. It serves as "vital signs" of the car, and oil pressure of course is the most important. Just like heart rate/rhythm of a person is when they're on the 'scope, but they also measure body temperature, blood pressure, etc. We don't have any computers in us, nor error codes, though sometimes we can diagnose ourselves. Often we do so incorrectly. In fact, with all this hype about everything being digical today, the bottom line is that there is no point. We are analog beings. Sound, whether it's that of a TV program, or maybe some music you want to listen to, doesn't matter how digical high "deaf" (I see what I did there) it is, that digical must be converted to analog for us to enjoy it. Otherwise you'll just hear a series of ones and zeroes, and that doesn't sound much like music to me, though with the likes of today's music it might actually be better!
    Water + Circuit Board = Bad News? I've heard an equation like that before...if I only could remember where it was and who said it...

    • @Sharkie626
      @Sharkie626  6 лет назад +3

      Great fine that's all good, now where is my appliance USB to hook up my phone??
      But yeah. I do remember telling ya about my skepticism while I was still on LI and at your place. And when I made the video of showing the inside, that board placement just made me even more skeptical.
      But, as usual, this wasn't my decision. So, I'm just going to have to wait it out and see what this guy comes up with. Maybe it will actually make it trouble free for many years to come, maybe it won't. All I can do is hope for the best. I'm going to guess the washer has some kind of chart too in the control panel. But hopefully I won't be needing it.

    We have a newer gas dryer like the one shown, the first problems was it would trip the circuit breakers three times, we called the tech. they came out and where unable to replicate it so they left. Then it started to work again until today, now it won't come on at all, like the plug is dead but it is not. So now the dryer is dead and door mechanism seems to be working correctly.
