Weathering a HO Scale Bulkhead Flat Car

  • Several weeks ago I was asked how I went about weathering a bulk head flat car, so I decided to pick up another car, although this one from Walthers (60' Pullman Standard Bulkhead Flat Car) has the timber planked bulk heads and this is the model of choice, for this video.
I will say I do use an airbrush, although the same effect can be achieved with a brush.
The paints I chose are from the Scale Model Supplies (SMS) range of airbrush paints (no thinning required) and these go on with such ease. Not so good for paint brush use.
The other products I use are weathering powders and isopropyl alcohol.
The video runs for 28 minutes, but it shows the techniques I use to achieve the results.
Although I use a run of the mill Walthers car, this same technique can be applied to other manufacturers such as Rapido, Athearn, Atlas or Scale Trains.
If you have any questions, please ask !
    Cheers, Gary.

      G'day MilPlanes1,
Thank you for your kind words. I will say I did study a few photos of bulk head flat cars before I proceeded with this model, although discovering photos of this style of car is hard. Then again, timber is timber and steel is steel and we all have an idea om the behavior of these products over time, ie rust and decay !
      Cheers, Gary.

      G'day Gormo,
Thanks mate for your kind words. Always interesting to record the procedures over a couple of days and to see the outcome of the video and how it will turn out. At times it is easy to completely miss recording a small section of the process in a delayed video. Overall I am happy to read that you though it was informative.
      Cheers, Gary.

Definitely improves the overall look of the car by volumes. Nice work Gary. 👍Are you going to show your process of doing the trucks and couplers.

    • @Gaz3801
      @Gaz3801  6 месяцев назад +1

      G'day Colin,
The trucks were simply airbrushed with the Railroad tie brown first, followed by a little of the black/orange rust weathering powders. This is also the same process for the couplers. When I purchase another bulk head, I will cover this.
      Cheers, Gary.

      G'day Steve,
Thank you kindly. These videos do take a bit of time to piece together as the weathering is completed over a few days. I'm glad you liked it.
      Cheers, Gary.

really well done. As you know, I tend to use an airbrush for my weathering but might have a go this way@@Gaz3801
