  • It's Sunday Night! Welcome! Thanks for watching Probable Cause. The LIVE chat is open during the initial showing and closes once the video has completed.
    This short video contains all the General Aviation fatal accidents from June, plus a bit of new info on the plane crash that I was in on June 17. This video will be followed by a new LIVE video, where I tell the whole story of what happened that night, and what I wish (now) I had done different!
    What Dan Forgot! You have to be a subscriber to participate in the LIVE video that follows this. Subscribing is FREE! The LIVE feed will be interactive and I will try to take questions as able in the LIVE chat room.
    This channel takes a lot of work! I hope that it helps you stay alive!
    If you are able to offer support, we very much appreciate it. If not, that is OK too!
    I have no sponsors, no Patreon, no Ad Revenue, I pay all my own travel expenses for all speaking engagements.
    But most of all, learn and understand the concepts presented. I work on these videos and travel to locations as I am able. Help me if you can! If you liked this video and my effort, you can donate a very small amount ($1 or $2) direct to Dan for helping to travel make this aviation content possible, and for getting the DC-3 animal air lift mission flight ready. See the web site below for that. Please keep donations to my cause "small" and ONLY participate if I helped you, or if you appreciate the work I did to bring you this special aviation content, or especially if you learned something that can help you stay alive!
    All electronic transactions are safe and secure via the four mobile banking applications listed below. All electronic donation support is received 100% in full, with no fees or transaction percentages lost! Thank you! Dan Gryder
    NEW: the DTSB tax deductible Super Fund page is here!

Just a guess, football implying you were likely in your teens/ 20s when it happened (?) - typically a much better age for quicker recovery from physical impacts! . . . but per chance was is also a decade or 3 ago (?) ...meaning maybe modern options more readily put in pins and fertilizers that speed recovery ?

    In 1961 I took my 1st flight lesson. My instructor told me to always use the checklist, even though we were flying an Aeronica. 11BC. THAT LESSON SERVE ME WELL FOR THE NEXT60 years.

    • @erwinschmidt7265
      @erwinschmidt7265 4 дня назад +4

      Yeah Buddy on your Aeronica, as Dentist & me on upteenth Lunch at Detroit Metro, using static etc. fakin' 2nd radio that squawked not. We was dining, happy as bugs, when immaculate dressed dude strode up to us, ID'd self as FAA, & inquired about Aeronica, sayin' could only see 1 radio. Doc apologized, but told never to return to Metro w/o that 2nd radio. Doc S-tatic over not being fined, and next week when returned, we had TWO RADIOS, in his Brand New Skymaster, that had nearly cost us our lives. Doc had been givin' rides to our Buds out at Livingston Co. Airport, in his brand-new plane & I assume that tired the Ole Boy out. We set out for Metro, and probably my shortcoming, but Doc said, "She's a bit sluggish comparing to this morning, I wonder if it's the higher temps?" I asked, "Why does one of your tachs read ZERO? Doc shouted, no #2, start me up, Start Me Up, START ME UP!!! Engine was cold, but got the start, revving up, choke in, not gonna clear treeline, second wheels off, Buddy got un-commanded wheels up, as I wanted to live! With both engines maxed out, Doc babied 'er up & outta the woods exclaiming, "Geeesh, we almost didn't make it...Wheels Up". I just set there lookin' at 'em, so he said, "What"!! I said, "Doc, if hadn't picked your gear up second off runway, we'd both be dead!! He went thru a dozen, "Oh my's", then told me not to say a word about this, or he'd have hell to pay! Doc landed at Metro perfect, for havin' a new airplane, I tied 'er down, & it was to the Restaurant we went, but FAA Dude had taken our traditional table. Doc glared at him just tryin' to poke us, but FAA Dude waved us over to him. He said, SIT DOWN!!! We sat, w/Doc groveling about having 2 radios now and such...but FAA Dude cut him off, asking, "Are you aware there's a video floatin' around out there, with a brand new Cesena Skymaster departing Livingston Co. Airport, starting takeoff with only #1 engine running, finally starting #2, but so low at treeline, as gear came up, belly cleared forest by Zero feet, have you heard anything about that?" Doc said, "Well, I guess we have now, but it was The Kid, it was The Kid that noticed no #2, & started it, and it was The Kid that said we wasn't gonna make it & gave us uncommanded wheels up as left runway, I swear to God Sir, it was him, not me, pointing at me! Everybody in Restaurant laughin' at Doc, throwin' his tantrum, so when finished, FAA Dude said, so, Sir, are you sayin,"If you'll give FAA/NTSB full rights for use of today's video out in Livingston Co., you & The Kid will show up for FAA's free Private Pilot Refresher course in evenings, twice per week over 8 week period, so we don't have any more close calls, or would you prefer I jerk your ticket right here & now? Doc acquiesced, & I got an extra 16 burgers & fries!

    I'm glad Glen, Dan and their passenger are recovering. In this video, the tailwheel lock handle is filmed in the up or RELEASED position in flight. Handle up Dan, unfortunately is tailwheel UNLOCKED on the Lockheed 12A. When the tailwheel lock handle with the silver knob is pushed down, it detents towards the captain, and locks in at the bottom. The spring feel when operating the handle comes from the spring on the tailwheel locking segment (clearly) shown in Glen's video of him resealing his tailwheel unit on his workbench. By Lockheed design, the locking segment (not a pin) is spring loaded to the unlocked position. When the handle is pushed down the cable moves forward, pulling the segment arm and spring forward, and the chunky locking segment engages in a cut-out, locking the tail wheel straight. Glen's Lockheed / Beech comparison cockpit tour video also shows the handle up which makes sense in the hangar. Handle up is unlocked. Additionally, Glen's Lockheed has pilot's and co-pilot brakes as the airplane is modified to use Beech-18/ Goodyear parts. Beech-18 brakes can be challenging to bleed due to the Goodyear brake shuttle valve on both left and right brake calipers. The shuttle valves are required for pilot and or co-pilot brake dual pressure inputs. With a possible spongy right brake on the captain's side, the tailwheel lock if engaged, would have helped keep it straight, at least the designer Kelly Johnson thought it might.

    Welcome back Dan...thought we mighta lost ya!! FINALLY, someone I can relate to!!! In '67@17, sht weather in Mich, so went on our cycles trail riden'. I had chose poorly, as picked that, over getting overdo haircut. Had heada hair so thick, could barely get helmet on. You mentioned hard-headed, & can see I had same condition + was German, all to be known as hard-headed. Returning, couldn't clear creek, so I led back on newly paved MDOT I-96 Access Road @45, when all of a sudden in pitch blackness, it disappeared. Last second leap of faith, nearly cleared gap, slammed opposing pavement face-first, tumbling down road when heard/felt heavy clunks! Right away quick mind said, "We made it, picked up misfire, so reached out lt hand for clutch, & pvmt ate it!! There surely were 6 clunks, but those were my head slamming pvmt, so Plan C was stand up like a man, but that only ground my huntin' boots down to slicks, & finally smushing face into grass shoulder! State Coppers policin' accident, lost their brand-new Cruiser in crevasse, as thought I was fulla sht!! 2 hrs late to Hosp, Rookie St. Copper had figured out how I got mangled. Perched on back of seat w/80cc Yamaha, last second leap had only taken ctr of front wheel to top edge of pvmt break, sling-shotting dumazz on back bouncing down pvmt at 90, instead of 45! Ole Doc May examined decimated fullface helmet, w/ 6 huge smashes in it, & leading edge worn completely off. He determined each impact shoulda killed me, but being Baylor wood lap-strap design, I survived. Sr. St. Copper asked Doc, "What woulda happened if had one of them new LEXON Helmets?" Doc rolled his eyes back & turned back to my reassembly!! Worst thing about it was, w/both shoulders broke, & had to rely on my "Buddies" for lift-off, & placement of books in/out slings between classes too. It turned out, only my Girl Buddies would lend a hand, as guys wouldn't help guys do menial sht, oh but that wouldn't stop them from cramming wastepaper in the slings!! I trust you'll have better luck these days, and Support Crew will see you back to your ole self! Heal up soon Buddy!!! (P.S. Docs only fee, was to be gifted remains of my helmet for high-powered Conference, & together with inventions he came up with to save Patient w/no neck muscles whatsoever, he became world famous, so was named Director of the Hospital!) C'mon Dan...that's funny, right?? No?? Well, PROBABLE CAUSE of pavement failure was!! MDOT Rookie Project Engineer, jerked out creek's old huge metal culvert, in favor of twin little ones yielding more Sight Distance, BUT ON LOW SPEED, SHORT STRETCH OF ROAD, WHERE SIGHT-DISTANCE NEVER AN ISSUE, but only one to lose face over the deal was me!! Now, tell me that didn't make ya chuckle, Buddy!! Get well soon!!!

    Watched your live video. Lots of great info. The stars had to align for you and your friends to get out of that plane alive. God was looking out for all of you. Water truck nearby, EMT guy strong enough to get you out, etc. I couldn't have done it for sure.

    I'm not a subscriber, so I didn't see the live video, but I wonder if anyone mentioned shoulder harnesses. When I purchased my 66 M20C Mooney, it did not have shoulder harnesses. One of the first things I did after I purchased it, was to add shoulder harnesses to the front seats. I didn't see them in the Lockheed, or if they are present, they weren't used ,which might have prevented some of your facial injuries. I'm glad y'all survived and pray for a speedy, full recovery for all of you.
