I think for the context of Ashiok it makes sense that she is the only Planeswalker in the set. 2 should be a standard, even if they have to repeat one from a set they just did
I like the change a lot. Maybe I'm a magic Boomer though, started playing as an 8 yo during the Onslaught block and I never liked how planeswalkers changed the flow of the game. Walkers with little impact doesn't bother me, but the teferis, ugins, okos and karns really warp the board state negatively imo.
What I wanna know is where has Garruk been? He promised the king & queen he’d keep an eye on their children but there was no indications of what he was doing during MoM or if even still has his spark
I think the last we heard, he was actively avoiding following them to Arcavios because Liliana was there, but literally nothing that I know of since then.
Wouldn't Eriette be based on the Evil Queen from Snow White rather than Sleeping Beauty? I don't recall apples being a big part of the Sleeping Beauty story, but it was how Snow ended up in her eternal sleep. Also fun fact, Ruby is actually not our first red riding hood reference. Scorned Villager was another take on that character back in Dark Ascension, but in that version of the story, she was both Red and the big, bad wolf.
I think I'm okay with 1 planeswalkers per set. I wouldn't bark at them throwing in another one here or there but I think they frequently became the story and now the set has a chance to really explore. I run a DND campaign that takes my friends through mtg locations (they don't play mtg) and now I'm really hoping we're going to get a really deep dive into eldraine
I think variance of the numbers between sets seems like a great thing. Some sets may only need one Planeswalker to help push the story forward and allow for other characters to be the "heroes" of the story. On the other hand some places may require 2 or 3 in order to further explore how the great pruning has affected those who are still left. This also allows space for recurring characters who are exploring via the omenpaths, which has a lot of potential for lore.
I’m personally a huge fan of planeswalkers in general, and I often like the head to head confrontation between multiple walkers so I’m a little bummed by only 1 per set, but I’m a big fan of the omenpaths
I think that will last for only a few sets. People thought we'd go without Planeswalkers at all for a good amount of time, yet we only had one full set with zero walkers, now they've already returned (and that set wasn't even Standard legal). I don't think Wizards is going to go too long with the 1 walker per set thing, as they're one of the most popular things in the game.
Big excite! Can't wait to get the story for the set and the new LORE! And to answer your question about planeswalkers. I want it to just feel natural. If a story has 2 well written planeswalkers then 2 . If they do 3 well written PWs then 3. But I feel like 1 might get a little um? Idk maybe disappointing when the there favorite character doesn't appear in a card. But also I personally love planeswalkers sooo I'm always down to have another war of the spark again 😂
We still dont know the original plane from where the "First Sliver" is. So that's still out there. Keep in mind that Volrath took the sliver queen from that still Unkwon plane. Hope to see more of their lore.
I love planeswalkers personally, though I also love the idea of only one per set at least in standard. There is always the new commander cards/nonstandard legal cards that come in every standard set where I assume other planeswalker cards could be placed. So I am really going to enjoy watching how the story, lore and the game itself molds to this new style moving forward.
Hi, I love this video and I am SUPER excited for this set! Eldraine is my favorite plane! However, I have to make the nitpickiest of corrections. Eriette is NOT the Sleeping Beauty spin. Talion is (fae lord who put a sleeping curse on Eldraine). Eriette is the Snow White spin. That was according to tge MTG preview panel. I am sorry to be so nitpicky. I just really love this plane.
What I wanna know is where has Garruk been? He promised the king & queen he’d keep an eye on their children but there was no indications of what he 😊was doing during MoM or if even still has his spark
If I had a nickel for each time eldraine was the next story set after the end of a major plotline I would have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice
I'm still plugging that Ashiok is Dyfed after she participated in dark ritual to bind human Yawgmoth to old Phyrexia's world soul. However they are probably just gonna make her a morgan lay fey type.
Also, one planeswalker per set seems fine by me. Sure we might not see some of the established ones showing up and getting story development as much, but on the other hand, they seemed to do too many "here's the planeswlker with the set mechanic in mind" and then we never see those characters again. They probably thought it was a waste to spend time creating and developing these characters only for them to be tossed aside. Both Calix and Oko are recent examples of this.
The Afterlife of Eldraine might as well be the wilds itself (well kind of) since the wilds are basicly the otherworld from celtic mythology it could be that all who die on the plane appear as ghosts in the wilds Also I´m wondering if the magic Artifacts of each court are still in tact because at least the High King could be easily brought back with the cauldron since he already proved his worthyness to it and I´m also a bit disappointet that Oko doesn´t return since he simply left in Throne of Eldraine and where never seen again
I am so glad planeswalker cards are getting limited. I started playing before Lorwynn (Odysey was my first) and I liked the old kind of weak planeswalkers we got in Lorwyn/Alara. Hated the power creep of them by Zendikar and how often I had to play against superfriend decks. MAgic to me is two(or more in a multiplayer game) planeswalkers battling with a collection of spells. Planeswalkers don't even have cards that card specifically target them until I think return to Ravnica. They should only be played in games with decks made after Lorwynn. It really hurt my vorthos experiance playing the game and I hope this means I personally have more fun in the future.
I love Ashiok they are such a baddie they went to New Phyrexia after learning about those terrifying creatures from Elspeth and decided to go there and just kick Elesh Norn's butt.
I love planeswalkers, as I've been vocal about Ajani in thr past. I like the planeswalker limit as it again reinforces the impact and consequences March of the Machine had.
There are still plenty of planeswalkers out there and many who just need to find a spark. Im excited to see whats going on in eldraine as i have a vested interest in the plane. I am grieving for the loss of king kenrith and his queen and rankle. I have an eldraine decklist on my "channel" and i cant wait to see the new additions henceforth.
i feel that the new rule is not a bad thing, this allow to have multiple planeswalker on a story arc without making 10 cards for the same planeswalker, how many, take The Gate Watch for example, how many cards Chandra has? how many cards jace has? because theya re protagonists they show up in almost every story and get a lot of cards for that, with the new rule, that will not happen anymore, Chandra will not get 20+ planewasker cards, she get 1, you can have a character showing in multiple sets and still only having 1 card, this allow balance
Happy that planeswalkers have been reduced. But I can't wait to see what they do with Ashiok pulling Phyrexian Nightmares out on the denizens of Eldraine.
Personally I think they shouldnt limit themselves to how many walkers a set should have in order to have more creative storytelling Like one set could have 6 while another could have 0, not including universes beyond sets
I still think Eldraine is the focus of a possible return of the Phyrexians a lot of years from now in MTG history. The Phyrexians trapped here where the ones of Urabrask, the ones that in theory defied Elish Norn, so it makes no sense for them to be linked to Norn's oil strain and be dependant by her and New Phyrexian... those could be alive and operative at the bottom of that pit, they simply can't escape (for now)
I'm just glad WOTC is moving past the Gatewatch as the main characters driving the story. Ever since War of the Spark ended up being extremely underwhelming character death-wise, I'm excited about the potential in this new multiverse with limited Planeswalkers. Hoping for more plane-hopping characters that can grow into their own stories now that the Gatewatch-Bolas-Phyrexia storylines seem mostly concluded, at least for now.
Ashiok as Maleficent is glorious! The first witch is a take on SnowWhite, not Sleeping Beauty, BTW. I like the idea of having fewer PW, honestly: the lore suggest that the igniting of a spark is something extremely rare and, while it's true that most PW cards were versions of already seen characters, the sheer number of PW cards constantly getting published kinda took from that idea. "X is something unique and extraordinary" kinda loses its meaning when you get 5 new X-type cards with each new set. To paraphrase Syndrome "when everybody is special, then no one is".
@@channeling764 Let me tell you, I'm old enough to remember when the first kamigawa block came out... it was a shock! From fifth dawn with just Raksha to the bajillion in the first set was mindblowing.
Planeswalkers are a type of card and it's like saying we were only gonna get 1 creature a set. War of the Spark said that there were dozens of walkers we haven't met now they're walking that back to well you get 1 cause they basically don't exist anymore
Though I have my reservations on the writing after seeing the conclusion to March of the Machine, I feel that having less planeswalkers helps reinforce the idea that they were supposed to be something unique, special, and is a welcome slowing down after the attempted heights of the previous narrative arc. MTG was becoming both constrained by its design, and bloated due to the recurring cast. Planeswalkers are the sole beings capable of travelling the eternities with a degree of control. By contrast, Omen paths are significantly more interesting because it poses both a limit (be it portals are unreliable, or sure to become locations to be fought for) and a narrative freedom; no longer is it the one in thousands travelling the multiverse, or some regular folk with some incredibly high tier artifact.
I just had an idea what if we had a planeswalker that had an Adventure side to it and if u cast its Adventure side first then it enters with additional loyalty counters or something idk. And maybe instead of 3 abilities it would just be 2 to make things a bit more fair and reasonable
I’m a little worried about the “Omenpath Arc” as they dubbed it in a livestream. The game’s cards has already been struggling to hold onto its identity thanks to secret lairs and all the showcase variants. I’m worried that with creature types ending up in planes they don’t belong “the Jack and the bean stalk veldalkien” will start to erode the identity of the planes themselves. I don’t know just a thought
One planeswalker a set feels like a gimmick that will most likely be short lived. I wish wotc would simply depower the planes walkers by making them uncommon that like they did in war of the spark and exclude all plus loyalty abilities. If the planeswalker has a passive then its a passive that adds loyal like "whenever you draw your second a turn, add a loyalty counter," etc.
I'm so glad they will just make one planes walker per set. It makes them feel more rare and powerful again. I hope they tone down legendaries too as its just a silly legend sallad at this point.
I think merely having one per set is cutting back a smidgen too far. An occasional 2 or 3 would be welcome. I do understand designing unique mechanics for planeswalkers is very hard to do, but I feel the option ought to be open. (Assuming there are more than 3 or 4 planeswalkers remaining--They still haven't shown a definitive list of who's who sparked/spark-less.
Should be at least 2 a set but it feels certain planeswalkers were overused so im hoping this may be a good thing? So far im happy. Always thought Ashiok was interesting.
Is it just me.....or does Kellen look alot like Kytheon? Like Young Kytheon, hero of akros? Looking back at some art they kinda have the same build and color scheme. Reguardless I am looking forward to the story and set coming out soon :)
I'm pretty pumped for this. The Phyrexians were my favorite antagonists in the story, and the way they met their end was perfect. I think it'll be fun to see which Planeswalkers kept their sparks, and which didn't.
That kid doesn't look interesting to build a story. Wish we didn't waste this moment on one of the worst planes in the multiverse 😒 they also better explain this mess with the twins. Royalty isn't hereditary on Eldraine leaving Will with no true claim to the throne With this marking the (temporary) end of multiverse stories we don't need many planeswalkers in each set anymore. Plane contained stories don't need much more than locals
1 planeswalker per set just means more slots for proper rares/mythics. A game win. But... they probably aren't going to properly utilize this in any real way.
I do not like the 1 planewalker a set idea, less yes, 1 was unnecessary. However I look forward to seeing what they can design with focus on 1 prime walker per set
They were throwing way too many PWs into sets for years now (I especially noticed it post planeswalks being ruled as legal commaders); but I would have gone with two PWs per set. One is too likely to be in a color combo I won't play.
Less Planeswalkers is great so we can finally have smaller scale stories with legendary creatures again without the bloody Gatewatch getting in the way.
This story seems interesting, but I don't like the one Planeswalker per set rule. Planeswalkers are one of my favourite parts of MTG and to see them reduced to one a set is sad for me
I'd rather they not be monocolored, but as long as we get decent legendaries in the other colors, I'm fine with having one great Planeswalker instead of one good, one bad, and two unplayable ones.
I'm ok with one planswalker per set but no so much with millions of legendary characters since it feel like baiting commander players especially fav walkers losing their sparks but that's how I feel
Not a fan of there only being 1 walker per set, I'm trying to not be upset but i had my hopes up for Eldraine and it just like I'm getting nothing that i wanted from not only this set but future upcoming sets as well. I wanted Garruk, i wanted Oko, not some random no name legends that are native to this plane, And yea everyone's story has to start somewhere but just because you slap someone in front of my face and tell me they are important doesn't mean I'm going to care. I will admit to only caring about a Specific handful of non walker characters in lore, but I wouldn't say that is my fault. Wizards has spent so long focusing primarily on Planeswalkers why would they not be the thing most players are invested in? And now a bunch were killed off/De-Sparked/MIA and I'm suddenly supposed to care about other characters more? I'm realizing that I am getting more upset the longer I type about it. I just had expectations that were not only unfulfilled but the reverse of what I wanted appears to be the new direction going forward. Wizards had much work to do int the story going forward but considering the strength of the previous writers I don't honestly expect it to be worth it.
Planeswalkers aren't good in EDH, meaning why would Wizards waste a mythic slot on a card that wont see play in commander. Commander is driving the prices and the decision making at wotc.
@@kylewidmar3177 No. It's part of their identity. A person is more than jus a gender/sex. And in how many placees of the world today, are people still being killed for things like being an albino? Just saying it's 2023 doesn't mean anything without applying it the person you're upset with. Where does Aether Hub live? That really changes whether it was malicious, accidental slip up, societal norm done carelessly, or just plain ignorance because as I said, it really only gets mentioned a couple times and not on cards(due to trying to keep china happy).
1 planeswalker per set? I'm ok with it. Forces them to put focus on the legendary creatures of the set and keep the story centered on them instead of the planeswalker.
If they had said “most sets going forward will only feature one planeswalker each” then I’d be happy cuz I think they were too integral to standard in recent yrs n take up most of the mythic slots in sets. But they said “there WILL only be one planeswalker per set” n I think that self imposed limitation is gonna stifle their story creativity. Y can’t two of the remaining planeswalkers run into each other r since many r alrdy friends they could just be travelling together. Like by saying that we won’t get more than one per set it means no more planeswalker vs planeswalker fights ever again. Like I get toning things down but don’t lock urselves in a box to do so, come on, WOTC, learn from ur mistakes n stop speaking in absolutes
I dont like this new direction for magic. I am a huge Planeswalker fan. Like, I actively wemt out of my way to collect them. So, this is a bummer for me. As for Kellan? I could care less. By a mileshot. Hes not interesting to me. He seems like a waste of time. I wouldve rather have Rowan be the main character and her decent into madness/villainy in more detail. Kellan just robbed Rowan of a story in my opinion.
Lol not to be that guy, but how are the twins parents black and white but they both have Caucasian appearance? It be those little things that throws me off stuff like this, it ain’t making sense 😂 cool cards tho
I would much prefer 2, or 3 in certain sets, but I can understand having some sets where we don't even have a single Planeswalker.
I think for the context of Ashiok it makes sense that she is the only Planeswalker in the set. 2 should be a standard, even if they have to repeat one from a set they just did

Reguardless I am looking forward to the story and set coming out soon :)
So Omen-Paths are just new Planeswalkers...
Has oko just been forgotten?
Last I checked he isn't dead but correct me if I'm wrong
I'm pretty pumped for this. The Phyrexians were my favorite antagonists in the story, and the way they met their end was perfect. I think it'll be fun to see which Planeswalkers kept their sparks, and which didn't.
No more oko?😅
That kid doesn't look interesting to build a story. Wish we didn't waste this moment on one of the worst planes in the multiverse 😒 they also better explain this mess with the twins. Royalty isn't hereditary on Eldraine leaving Will with no true claim to the throne
With this marking the (temporary) end of multiverse stories we don't need many planeswalkers in each set anymore. Plane contained stories don't need much more than locals
I think they are going to limit legendarys for "reprint equity"
Talion is most likely based on the Faerie King Oberon
1 planeswalker per set just means more slots for proper rares/mythics. A game win. But... they probably aren't going to properly utilize this in any real way.
I do not like the 1 planewalker a set idea, less yes, 1 was unnecessary. However I look forward to seeing what they can design with focus on 1 prime walker per set
They were throwing way too many PWs into sets for years now (I especially noticed it post planeswalks being ruled as legal commaders); but I would have gone with two PWs per set. One is too likely to be in a color combo I won't play.
i love superfriends decks i am sad they are starving me of new planeswalkers
Less Planeswalkers is great so we can finally have smaller scale stories with legendary creatures again without the bloody Gatewatch getting in the way.
We really not going to mention the simic prince of mtg
🎉
This story seems interesting, but I don't like the one Planeswalker per set rule. Planeswalkers are one of my favourite parts of MTG and to see them reduced to one a set is sad for me
Where is my love Oko!?
I'd rather they not be monocolored, but as long as we get decent legendaries in the other colors, I'm fine with having one great Planeswalker instead of one good, one bad, and two unplayable ones.
Seen nothing for Mardu Knight support
Lol anyone else notice he keeps sayin “fairfolk” the Fae-folk are displeased with this.
It's because in MtG, they're called Fairys, not faerie.
I'm pretty sure the first Witch is a reference to Snow White not Sleeping Beauty.
I'm ok with one planswalker per set but no so much with millions of legendary characters since it feel like baiting commander players especially fav walkers losing their sparks but that's how I feel
I'm OK with the whole one planeswalker per especially to show who kept their spark but aftermath ruined it
I'm not really much of a fan of plainswalkers as a mechanic so im ok with 1 per set
I BET he’s the son of Nicol Bolas
Wizards had much work to do int the story going forward but considering the strength of the previous writers I don't honestly expect it to be worth it.
isnt ashiok only one thing? the plural language is confusing
Planeswalkers aren't good in EDH, meaning why would Wizards waste a mythic slot on a card that wont see play in commander. Commander is driving the prices and the decision making at wotc.
Where the F is Garruk?!?!
Ashipk is not a her, they them. Not difficult dude... "one of HER nightmare creatures" 3:24
It's really only mentioned once or twice in lore. I can understand the slip up being unintentional.
@@kyleellis1825 it's ONLY their identity, and it's ONLY 2023.
He used "their" for Ashiok otherwise, so it seems like a slip up to me, not like he doesn't know their pronouns.
1 planeswalker per set? I'm ok with it. Forces them to put focus on the legendary creatures of the set and keep the story centered on them instead of the planeswalker.
I do not like one planeswalker in a set. I like having a few walkers a set.
Oko
First!
Always the speedy one
@@AetherHub I try my best
Bruh why can't we just go back to Alara
2. one good one bad would be better imo
Called Ashiok “her” once. Cancelled.
Personally, I’m not a fan of just one planeswalker per set/story:
Will Rowan is so lame. Couldn’t imagine disliking a character more than Jace but here I am.
I do not like the great pruning nor the only one walker a set.
