First cover version I've heard in a while that feels like I want to hear it again - most covers I've heard seem to go in the direction that "If I cry even more tears while singing this than the previous person who covered it did, it means my version will be even better than theirs", whereas this one feels more grounded and real.
I’ve heard a lot of versions of this masterpiece but Eric’s rendition is the one that really does it for me, the raw, painful, grittiness that he imparts vocally as well as the simple yet biting guitar work makes me feel every emotion in the spectrum.
This was so much better in the stand live. He sang this as his opening at the BOK Center in Tulsa, OK. I was blown away at his concert. One of the best.
Eric Church in his own right, is a great Singer/Songwriter? performer. I've seen him twice live: the first was at the Love for Levon Tribute Concert at the now (closed and gone) Meadowlands Arena In New Jersey, in Oct. 2012. The 2nd time was on "The Outlaws" tour in 2015. I was so impressed with him in 2012, that I had to see him as a Headliner. He reminded me of some past outlaws: Kristofferson, , Cash, Nelson, Haggard, and Waylon; and some new outlaws of country, Singleton, and Zac Brown. Watching him perform this song by one of the true Poet Laureates of the Last five decades, performed Exactly 3 months and 1 day before the death of the Late Leonard Cohen, made me reflect on the fact that here was a sincere, humble world class performer, paying his respects to another great, humble, gentle class act performer of another generation, and genre of music. As I wiped my eyes, and checked out many more live covers, he played tributes to two other legends, who had inspired him in life, to become the man he is today: the late Merle Haggard ( who he immortalized in " Pledge Allegiance to the Hag", and to one of Country music's Poet Laureates, the now retired, Kris Kristofferson. Song writers usually talk about other great song writers, who preceded them, and inspired them. Eric Church picked some Giants to follow, and long may he run(paraphrase of Neil Young, another Giant) Thanks for the upload Taylor, and thanks for Your ability to pay respect to the Great Singe/Songwriters whose you've chosen to follow in, including Levon Helm, who was one of the first class acts you paid tribute to, Mr. Church. I admired the earlier Country Outlaws, and Now Your one of the few outlaws out there. Inspire a few more Eric. I'll try to catch you, if you play in Jersey again. Peace.
Thank you Taylor for uploading this video. great quality. I've played it over and over the last few days. The Thunder Road video is bad ass also. I'm looking forward to future Church videos from you! Hopefully you can catch some more great chief moments like this one!

As great as this video is, it was better live. Possibly the best 4 minutes of live music I have ever seen.
