Finding the 13 Broadmoor sirens. Siren A - Bracknell Station

- Our siren hunt begins in Bracknell - 1 of 13 sirens (I've labeled them A to M)
BTW - apologies for keep calling them "air-raid sirens". These are ESCAPE SIRENS.
Broadmoor currently have 13 escape sirens located in the neighbouring towns surrounding a secure hospital in the UK.
Me and Chay went out to find them all - it was a very interesting bank holiday Monday lol! Chay was a bit apprehensive while waiting for the first siren to sound, but loved it afterwards :)
He liked it enough to stay with me whilst tracked them all down.
It was a good day as we did other things like play football in the parks, McDonalds and see the sirens of course!
It was a mixed bag - some viewable from the street, some hidden so much that you'd never know they were there (unless it went off!), some in council depots, compounds, parks and believe it or not - in the middle of housing estates metres from houses! (would scare the living daylights out of residents if they went off at 3am!)
Some are in secure places with no access at all.
The sirens are tested at 10am each Monday.
I have recorded 6 of them in action which have already been posted on youtube. See the links at the beginning of the movie.
HOW THEY WORK:
The Klaxon CS8 siren.
A 415volt 3 phase motor spins two rotors on either side. One rotor is for the high tone and the other for the low tone (the one with most holes is the HIGH tone).
During the escape siren, the airflow is cut alternately to each rotor by a shutter on each end producing the distinctive high-low tones. I believe these are known as CODED SHUTTERS - hence the model name Klaxon "CS"8.
Both shutters are opened together for the all clear tone. You can just make out the high and low frequencies being produced together if you listen.
There is an even closer view on the on the other side of the railway line. Drive around the corner from the station onto Market Street and then go around the roundabout onto Bagshot Road (A3095). Follow it to the next roundabout, then take the LAST EXIT on to the A303. Once there, take the second right on "Old Bracknell Lane W", and take the first right. follow the road then until you reach the end. There should be a Car Park on the left, which you need to follow to the very end, at which point you should be right next to the siren.
I miss this system of sirens. It's not every day you hear a CS8.. or any siren for that matter doing that Hi-Lo tone. If you're still interested in sirens and ever have the time, you should go visit the Carstairs Village siren. It seems to be doing Pulse (both shutters open and close with 3 second intervals) which the CS8s in Broadmoor originally did when they were first installed.
I can confirm that this siren is still working, as today I heard it blaring during my exam when my classroom had the window open
I used to work as a gas fitter for BDC & the siren is actually in the council yard @ old Bracknell lane.
4:55 chay lol screaming like a sissy made me grin a lil bit when u saild ''gonna be loud'' then chay screaming
Wow! I saw Honeywell! Are they popular where u are? Cool video! I have been watching all of ur vids! They are awesome!
Hey thanks very much! Honeywell are a very big company in the UK and deal with all different industries, including mine in security systems. I've not dealt with them much myself though.
This siren has been removed, confirmed in March 2018. Sad to see things come toppling down.
Brilliant timing! Update video just uploaded here: ruclips.net/video/Nr7hFzhSrKU/видео.html
Thats sad 😢
did you guys wear ear protection when the siren went off
For us, it would be a bit like going to a firework display with ear protection on - the experience would be ruined!
It depends on how far you are away from it. For example, if this were an issue, then the sirens wouldn't be allowed to be activated, as every member of the public near to the siren would need ear protection for health and safety purposes.
We don't wear ear protection.
I have found your 'missing' broadmoor siren!(the one by morrisons) it is visible through a gap in the trees and is the station siren. I will get you a picture asap
Can we go home ;-;
dont worry kid i feel u
Siren a happens to be my favorite because of the way it sounds
Quite a fast build up on that one.
Which siren is your favorite?
Rip 1952-2018
The first one , near the train station, is behind Morrisons. It's in the council yard !
yep! Please see new video which shows the location a little nearer: ruclips.net/video/ZCsOPqMjJo8/видео.html
Where it all began...
yep, the original tour with a very young mrchay!
Weird interest :-) - but I like it! Nice editing, very entertaining - made me watch a video about sirens!
I love how you can drive on the wrong side of the road and not even be drunk!
This is taken in England, which if you had a education, you would know they are opposite to American
Precisely why I was poking fun at English/Western differences, which if YOU were educated, you would be very well aware of this. I'm also quite certain that this man does not take to people insulting each other in the commentary sections of his videos.
I don't think Matthew, that even Einstein would realise that. So you are the one needing extra education. Maybe you should sign up for broad moor and be so dumb of thinking escaping is a joke. This is a joke.
+Super Trini Gamer Hmmm, wish there was a button on youtube called "end this thread" LOL :D
mrmattandmrchay
LOL
And cool that you replied! Because I like the quality and these sirens are interesting.
What year where they built in
+Snapple63547 squid System was installed 1952, then they added a few more sirens in the 60s.
I think its been removed as it had to be cut off electric as it was struck by lightning, never goes off no more
NateTHATgameR_ Interesting, thanks for that info! STILL not working?...it's been about 3-4 months now!
The siren behind safeway is there, can see it on Google Earth, its well behind safeway. As that used to be a housing estate that would make sense.
Cool, this is good information that I can easily check it out - could you please zoom into it on google maps, then copy and paste the URL as a reply so that I can see where it is? I can then go and take a look. Many thanks for this info.

SFXGroup Many thanks for this link, but for some reason I cannot use your link as the satellite view doesn't come up (the map view does). If I load from google maps uk then I can see the area. I've looked around and not found anything. The only thing slightly resembling a siren tower is to the top left of morrisons, it's white, but this is just a sign advertising Morrisons.
I don't think there is one here for this reason - the siren at Bracknell station is only yards away. If you were to walk along the train tracks from the bracknell station siren, to the roundabout shown on your link, it would take about a minute - they wouldn't put two sirens that close to each other. I'll send you my email, perhaps you could send me a screenshot of the area you are referring to? If it looks like a location then i'll go and check it out next time I'm there.
SFXGroup THAT'S A BLURRY PLACE ON A GOOGLE MAP!!
Here's how close it is to Siren A: vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/broadmoor-hospital-sirens/images/9/90/FakeSirenSafeway.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/640?cb=20170122071640
