People are generally familiar with Norse culture in a sort of Hollywood Comic Book fashion. But of course, the REAL Scandinavian heritage has a historical depth, and the REAL myths, legends, and sagas are grand in scope and filled with epic adventures.
The Norse were great game-players, and when the Vikings went exploring, seeking trade and establishing colonies, they brought their table-top games with them to new lands and peoples. Most of these were called “tafl” games - the word “tafl” literally meaning “table.”
Tablut is probably the most popular of these games. It's an asymmetrical strategy game in which one player is controlling a king and his guards, and the other player commands a larger force of attacking soldiers.
The objective for the king is to escape from the board, or to a corner space of the board. The objective of the attackers is to capture the king before he can get away. A great challenge!

A big fan of tafl games, thanks for covering it :)
The game has a huge imbalance.. One sided
I've seen many different set up and sizes to this game over the years. All still fun. Some where the king is not armed. Some where the board is small (7 x 7) and others where the board is quite large (19 x 19). Fidchell and Tablut being the common ones that most play. Alca Evangelii is like the Saxon Board but is played on the intersections instead of on the squares. All are very interesting to play.
immensely interesting!
The same Linnaeus who came up with the classification of species?
Smart guy.
your vids are so fascinating!!
Still need a Bahama Taxi peg board
Hmm, so it's essentially Nefltalf on a smaller board with a slightly different rule set?
I just recently discovered New Venture Games. Wow! Have backed the current Kickstarter. Eagerly looking forward to receding the games after the Kickstarter ends ina few days. BTW, great video explanation of the games! I enjoy watching the rules presentations.

Thanks, Lyle - welcome aboard!
@@DavidMMcCord: I used the following games in the classroom with my Reading students: The Great Dalmuti, Fluxx, Killer Bunnies, and Clue. I taught Elementary, Middle School, High School and College classes at different times during 37 years teaching Reading to students from many different nationalities.
@@lylewilliams1371 Excellent! Many of our customers are educators and institutions, I'm proud to say. The Great Dalmuti was a big hit with the Scout Troop a few years ago. The newer Scouts prefer Uno or Age of War.
I learn of the game playing Mount and Blade 2.
New video!
Have you done a playthrough of Brandu?
Is it one of your products?
I hope all those direct copies by big companies acknowledge that they are just reproducing a game that has been around for centuries...
Does it really matter? Most things are remakes whether the "creater" knows it or not.
