  • An expired SON lamp is subjected to excess current and burns a small hole in the arc tube.
    Appropriate isolation procedures were in place.

    Excellent EOL, interesting how the arc is maintained when internal tube ruptures, the outer capsule must have a vacuum in which the hot sodium escapes into and keeps the arc alive for a bit. Hope you find some more nearly dead lamps.

    Very effective getter you put into that lamp now.

      A lot of fun if you smash the bulb and put the pieces into the nearest watercourse

    hey now that is cool! So was that sodium that deposited onto the outer casing making it shiny?

      @@ianhosier4042 cool. I wonder what would happen if the casing was vented. would the sodium react with the water in the air? that might be fun to see.

      @@SuperBrainAK I will try that, not much sodium in a SON lamp.

      @@RODALCO2007 I smashed an EOL sodium lamp whilst running and all you get is a cloud of sodium hydroxide as the sodium vapour reacts very quickly with the water in the air. The remaining sodium coated glass fragments went into the local lake.

    There might not be any wasps but I still like to watch this anyway.

    You should have added some water through the hole.

    I love the old Street light fixture on background she looks like a older street light seen in abandoned pump station in area location near highway biffurcation on Portugal with twoo lamps mounted on reflector verticaly in it, this unusual model but charmed

    Love the touch of the ammeter in the background and the way it jumps from nothing to 25 amps. The only thing it lacks is the mandatory kWh meter to see how many units that bit of fun gobbles up. NB: how much is electric per kWh in NZ and is it wasp season over there yet?

    • @RODALCO2007
      @RODALCO2007  2 года назад

      The mandatory kWh meter was within the box, not visible in the video. The lamp consumed 0.05 kWh during the process.

      @@ianhosier4042 Those experiments don't use too much power. High Amperage is only on for short periods of time. You can have a lot of fun with $ 1 worth of electricity. Our unit rate is NZ$ 0.18 / kWh

    • @ianhosier4042
      @ianhosier4042 2 года назад

      @@RODALCO2007 that's about the same per kWh as in the UK. Given the price of a pint down the local pub here is over 8 of your dollars, spending that £ (or 2 of your dollars) on electric instead of beer is better for my health, is much more fun (especially when it results in the creation of lots of smoke) and lasts a lot longer so you carry on electrocuting those wasps and blowing up those bulbs!
