In this interpretation, it's extremely debatable. In some chinese groups, they are regarded as brothers. However, in many interpretations, they switch between just being friends and being actually related. Since the original book, while stating they "are two halves of the same mind," are never stated to be related, nor do they act like brothers. So yes, it could be argued that they are essentially the same being. It could also be argued that its a metaphor since they are both celestial primates and were on conflicting paths of destruction and enlightenment. LMK is a much less serious interpretation than most, as it's a childrens show. Things are going to be simplified, so really, they had two options for these two. Make them explicitly related, or make them not related at all. Since the nuance would be too much for younger audiences. (Especially since it's internationally translated, meaning it would reach audiences that know nothing of JTTW, nor the culture around it) And it seems they chose to make them unrelated. As this show had so many chances to call them "brothers". But they never do. (outside of the specific chiness translation where Wukong calls Macaque "brother" once, but it was in the brotherhood scene where it was likely referring to the brotherhood sort of brother. The scene is changed to "monkey bros" in the english translation. "Bro's" being more of a friend term in western worlds) they are only ever referred to as best friends by everyone. This shows fandom used to be very friendly with some of the lower-ranking staff before it became popular. And from what i remember, a few of the lower ranking artists made jokes about it, and one even drew some fanart of it themself. (I wasn't here for this part. it's just second-hand stuff. I've heard). However, the director has been on record stating that they won't ever do shadowpeach due to them being culturally brothers in some areas. But they never state them to be brothers in this show. Another nail in the coffin for them being unrelated is Macaques voice actor making jokes about it on Twitter and reposting some shadowpeach fanworks. So i doubt this show has plans to write them as related, since i dont think Macaques voice acror would've been allowed to keep the tweets up. In conclusion, it's complicated. And i think both sides can co-exist in this fandom. No one should attack shadowpeach shippers, since they aren't related in this interpretation, as long as they only ship them here, its fine. And no one should attack people who view them as brothers as well- they are in some chinese cultures and it would be disrespectful to ignore their existence.
