This is amazing how he is working alone and not tangling the line and still has control of the boat. It is a history of what he probably learnt from his Father and Grand Father. Perfect video!
Not a day I don’t go to the manacles and think about nigel . I now own Pedden. He would be so pleased to know that . Nigel was a gentleman in the true sense of the word
I went to school with Nigel and fished with him in the summer of 81 , During that Summer I could see Nigel wanted no more out of life than fishing , he lived for it , what a character. Yet another fisherman taken by the sea , RIP mate
Great video and fisherman, I could watch this for hours. This is the fish people should buy..not those caught by gigantic trawlers. This is sustainable fishing! Sad to know this hardworking man drowned.
Sad news I am afraid - Nigel Hill drowned at sea while fishing on Monday 28th of March, apparently pulled overboard by his fishing gear - a constant risk for all fishers, and especially for those fishing solo. This is the most popular of all of the RUclips videos of fishing I've done, and Nigel's strong character stands out. He will be much missed by all who knew him. Malcolm MacGarvin.
Such a shock and so sad. I grew up with Nigel, he was indeed a unique man, with a sense of humour and a bit of tongue in cheek mischief, I remember quite a few of those cheeky comments that came my way ☺! I feel so sad, he was such a nice, friendly chap, taken way too soon. I really feel for his brother and sister David and Jane and the extended families and also his friends. Rest In Peace now Nigel and fly high with that black back gull who used to watch and wait for you. I'm sure you'll be looking over all the fishermen and am equally as sure they will be missing your presence for many years to come 🐟 X
you just broke my heart. i was coming to post what a joy it is to see a real man at his tasks. a true outdoors-man and i admire him as much as the statue of david or any other great work. thanks nigel, for living.
Back in the seventies I was a pro. fisherman. Four hands[ me & 3 others] handlined 802stone [5 tons & 2 stone] from 3mile buoy to Lizard on the ebb in 6hours. The NEXT day a Looe 4hander had 1380stone [8&ahalf+++tons] off Salcombe. We would regularly take 300-500stone per day back then but it was destroyed by the Scotsmen with their mid-watering & purses.......told to come here [Cornwall] to mop up & pay their HUGE Highlands & Islands Development Board boat loans. Still makes me sick to think of that.....Cornish pissed all over yet again.
Thank's Lee - If I remember rightly Nigel had a good period about a week before. but I was pleased at how it captured Nigel's personality - and it really was a close second best to actually going out on the boat for those who don't have that opportunity - great sunrise!
Seems a bit sparse! I can remember in the mid 60’s early 70’s fishing out of Newquay on day boats and catching mackerel on hand line feathers. Six feathers to a line and getting six every lay out! Enough bait for a full day for six anglers in 30 mins. Happy days!
Im so confused on this rig setup haha , could someone that understands it kindly post a picture/sketch please. Is it in effect 2 straight wieghted rigs attached together end to end that are fed into the water and fed around ?
Hi Thomas - I had a look too, and can't see much, this was the closest www.linecaughtmackerel.org.uk/the-fishing-gear.html If you are really interested would you like to drop an email to me at malcolm@pisces-rfr.org and I could e.g. link you up with Dylan Bean at Kernow Sashimi, who Nigel lands to - perhaps they could help you source one in Cornwall, get it posted over?
+paul walters Didn't hear Nigel say this, but Oxford English Dictionary has: whiff 2. Angling. To angle for mackerel, etc. from a swiftly moving boat with a hand-line towing the bait near the surface. 1886 Globe 22 July 3/1 When you ‘whiff’ at Scilly, you whiff for pollack. & whiffing n.2 (also attrib.). 1836 W. Yarrell Hist. Brit. Fishes II. 172 Hand-line fishing for Pollacks is called whiffing. 1863 C. A. Johns Home Walks 164 We generally threw out our whiffing lines as we cruised about.
cheers for that, when the boat owner said we was whiffing I said speak for yourself :) , we did get 4 stone of mac in a few hours and some Snook I think he called them....type of needle fish.
It looks like he is using feathers in this video. If you look up "Mackerel Feathers" on Google, you will find them. You can use many different types of bait for mackerel. Feathers tend to be most popular as you can put many on one line to increase your chance of catching a fish. Other ways are Lures, Spinners and raw bait. Mackerel's natural prey are whitebait. Whitebait are very shiny small fish; so any bait that resembles whitebait will do. Hope it helps.
Forgive my ignorance, but does he catch all those w. one hand line?...it looks like there are more lines in the water.....and what do the mackerel bite on,when he is not using the lance bait....bare gold hooks, like a pilchard rig? ....i think i see some artificial jigs....he tips them w. the lance bait?
Yes Nigel uses just one line, in a continuous loop - it has one weight, then a series of metalic lures (reflected flashy light) with hooks, then the rest of the loop is line without hooks (so that the loop gets down to the right depth). Its getting pulled up through the shoal in a constant circle, and in the breaking dawn light the mackerel are in a feeding frenzy for a short period, and they go for the flashes. The fishing goes quiet soon after dawn - Nigel thinks that by using lance (also called sand eel in UK) he can prolong the fishing for a bit, but it is mainly without bait. There are gurdies for those who want to mechanise the process.
Malcolm MacGarvin thank you so much for the reply.....now the whole thing makes sense to some degree...the only 2 questions remaining would be, where exactly does one place the weight(my guess would be in front of the metal lures to pull them downward)....and the whole line on the spool would have to be a connected double line(to form the continuous loop)...and you just feed out enough of it to get to your desired depth?....Sorry to be so nosy, but this stuff fascinates me, since i like hand lining to begin with....;)
I think the weight might be below the lures to keep the tension? - but you'll be able to see that from the video, as you should see the weight coming on board and then him throwing it over again - it makes a splash as it goes on. I didn't see him making any adjustment to the line, I think the depth at which the mackerel are will be fairly constant - if the loop is too long, you will just have an unnecessary gap. I remember Nigel saying that there was quite a knack to getting the technique smooth.
+schlaznger -I just hear Nigel refer to it as fishing "on a loop" Having just checked Sabiki on the web to write a reply, it wasn't clear from the wiki that the main line in Sabiki is a continuous loop - other than that it sounded similar, with one weight and individual hooks.
sandeels (sand-eels) Ammodytes - also known as sea-lances or just lance. I've some photos of them, and a fishery dedicated to them just along the coast at St Ives Bay, for angler's bait, here www.pisces-rfr.org/UK/Cornish_coastal_inshore_fisheries_photo_library/Pages/St_Ives_sandeel_ring_netting.html#52
Food and knowing where it comes from son. Farmers husband and care for their livestock, but they still send them to market. There is no "irony" in loving the things that sustain you or the lifestyle of harvesting the sea.
+Hoang Phi - he is a commercial fisherman - I don't think he will make much of a living with catches only of that size, although on other days the catch is larger
what did you record a guy ??? .. my god do you know how to use camer ? .. look your screen on that old guy and his head and body .. no seay, not what he is throwing into water, when he is pulling out, what he catch .. my god .. disaster
+Matija Gluhak - fair comment, thanks. One of the challenges of filming on a very small boat and limited ability to change position, going out on it and seeing the method for the for the first time, and limited wide angle on this type of video camera. On balance most people seem happy to see it with its limitations rather than nothing at all.
This is amazing how he is working alone and not tangling the line and still has control of the boat. It is a history of what he probably learnt from his Father and Grand Father. Perfect video!

What happened?
@@iloveamerica8541he was found over the side of his boat in 2016 after it was noticed going round in circles with no one onboard.
RIP Nigel, a true Cornish fisherman , tight lines, from wales,

Really good video the real deal sorry that Nigel has passed
I think this is one your best videos Malcolm, sadly the fish seemed a bit scarce as was the case for the last few seasons.
Thank's Lee - If I remember rightly Nigel had a good period about a week before. but I was pleased at how it captured Nigel's personality - and it really was a close second best to actually going out on the boat for those who don't have that opportunity - great sunrise!

Good Job mate. Looks like a lot of work though. Thanks for posting. God bless.
wonderful video like it so much

enjoyed the video. thanks
I cant quite work out how the "loop" works? Is it an actual loop or is it a straight section between two lead sinkers? Does anyone know?
What was his final tally here in kg? A lot of the U10m lads up here have fitted jigging machines for the mackerel season.
RIP Nigel better fishing up their mate
why it wont tangle the line with the hook?\
NICE JOB!
Very interesting video. Any idea where I can find a diagram of the rig he is using in this video? I'd love to give this a try here in the US.

Hi does he need a cat a license for hand lining mackerel, nice video !!
What boat
when i did this down Cornwall i'm sure they called it "whiffing" is this correct ?
+paul walters Didn't hear Nigel say this, but Oxford English Dictionary has:

gary jenkins pleased you liked it Gary. Quite a character is Nigel.
malcolm macgarvin what bait use for mackerel please I need you help when I'm fishing never found mackerel
please let me know

LEONARDO PEREIRA bait usually isn't used for mackerel, it can be caught easily using the feathers(mentioned above) or a hook shaped like a little fish
do u use hook size what sir

yes, that is what i meant by "in front of"...in order to pull them down....but i will look at it again...fascinating stuff.....
What type of boat is it?
Awesome.
Is the fishing setup called a Sabiki rig?
+schlaznger -I just hear Nigel refer to it as fishing "on a loop" Having just checked Sabiki on the web to write a reply, it wasn't clear from the wiki that the main line in Sabiki is a continuous loop - other than that it sounded similar, with one weight and individual hooks.
Malcolm MacGarvin Oh ok now I understand. After your explanation it makes sense what I saw. Thanks for the help.
+Malcolm MacGarvin No mate it's a loop with Mackerel flies/feathers attached. Sabiki are smaller and usually used with a rod.
+Lee Winger Thanks for that clarification Lee
What are lanceies?

tutorials for the rig and how to pls xD
Dad had a gurdy on his boat
More mackerel
Right on my bird
best
Rips hooks out their gobs
Gg have GB
The guy filming was talking a lot 😂
'I love all forms of wildlife". I wonder if irony of that statement is lost on him as the dying fish thrash around his feet?
Food and knowing where it comes from son. Farmers husband and care for their livestock, but they still send them to market. There is no "irony" in loving the things that sustain you or the lifestyle of harvesting the sea.
You ought to be able to do better with a homemade sabicki rig and a rod & reel.
D Wetick you missed the point. You cannot have such huge number of feathers on rod and reel
Kill the fishes when you take them into the boat!!!
greedy
+Hoang Phi - he is a commercial fisherman - I don't think he will make much of a living with catches only of that size, although on other days the catch is larger
+Malcolm MacGarvin just using that cooler its not comercial fishing lol bait or personal use probably
what did you record a guy ??? .. my god do you know how to use camer ? .. look your screen on that old guy and his head and body .. no seay, not what he is throwing into water, when he is pulling out, what he catch .. my god .. disaster
