This film is fantastic! Its Quality of camera angles and sharpness...Its Sound recording that clearly can be heard with conversations and racing engine sounds - not faked like literally all of the many others of auto racing films I've seen...and, finally, a story about one of my favorites of my "top five" that should have won the Indianapolis "500" Mile Race.
At just a few months shy of being 19 years old, I was there at the race event, sitting with my dad, an uncle, and two of his friends of businesses in Atlanta. (One, was the general plant manager of a Ford assembly plant who's employer - Ford Motor Company - supplied the Paddock Penthouse tickets)
Our viewing area was in clear view of driver, Lloyd Ruby's pit. We all saw the tragic mistake Ruby made in leaving too quick before the fuel line coupling was to be disengaged. My uncle was pulling for Ruby like he had done the past two years (1967 & '66). "Hard Luck Lloyd" as the sports media was calling him would have given eventual winner, Mario a great run for first place yet...I think the Ford Indy turbo had somewhat more power, let alone Andretti's Brawner "Hawk" design had in aerodynamics. (Besides...Andretti and his team and sponsor was on a winning streak)
Oh...of my "Top Five Should Have/Could Have Won Indy", they are: Eddie Sachs; Gary Bettenhausen; Jim Hurtubise; Dan Gurney; and of course, the "star" of this episode- Lloyd Ruby. I would imagine that three of those guys would have had tears in their eyes if they had won the "500"... especially at the "Victory Banquet Award Dinner" the night following the race. Lloyd would have been one of them.

I do remember the winner. I mean, who doesn't? But, most importantly, I remember, very well in fact, Lloyd Ruby's friend and very loyal Crew Chief. Or as they used to say the "Chief Mechanic." That Man is; The great Dave Laycock!
