    These should be manufactured, My God! Do you have any clue how many people like me who grew up on this would shuffle to the local Wal Mart, Target, Best Buy, or even the average Game Stop for one of these???? You would be surprised, sure it would deplete the value of the original table top games but still we would be there like take no prisoners for one of these and share it with our kids.

As for making you one I wouldn't want to insult you with what it is worth. This took 80 + hours plus a couple of hundred dollars for the parts. It will be easier for you to build one yourself! Ahem, so you're butchering these classic Coleco LCD games which are probably going to be worth more than what you can easily have playing on your PC or scratch building a cabinet which plans are readily available? Really?

    • @nbhenry1647
      @nbhenry1647  8 лет назад

      Mad Conservative Crimefighter I understand where you are coming from. The one you see in the video was a non functioning game ready for the garbage. I simply repurposed the casing to make it better. On my other builds I do the same. Coleco only made 5 themed games and there is an avid collector organization out there, me being one of them. These are fantastic little games and I feel coleco stopped short on what could have been a more extensive collection. Enter the raspberry pi and small lcd screens and we have the platform to make more to add to the small line of original colecos. I, like many others that collect these, want more to add to our shelves. Simple as that. I would like to invite you to check out the Facebook page I have to see that this is all legit. I don't expect you to change your mind at all but maybe have a look at the work that can be done to resurrect these before they enter the landfill. Www.facebook.com/groups/oldmadenew

    Neil - I just acquired a broken Pac Man to start my project (I didn't have the heart to strip my working Pac Man). I'm just starting to research what I need and how to go about doing this - because - I have to! I'm going to use a 4.3" TFT screen and from my understanding, it can run on 9 to 12 volts. The Raspberry Pi B on the other hand, runs on 5 volts power. So, can you tell me a little about how you're powering both with your drill battery at 12 V? Originally, I was thinking of powering the TFT screen with a 9 volt battery, and using a micro usb charger (android phone charger) to supply power to the Pi. I would certainly love your input. Is there a better venue where I can bug you?? :o\

    • @nbhenry1647
      @nbhenry1647  9 лет назад

      Byron Wheeler Good you asked. The LCD is actually 5 volts. You have to pry out the voltage regulator on the LCD board and tie the Vcc to one of the capacitors for it to run with 5v. Here is a link that shows you. www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=17651 Now, the LCD in the video differs from the ones you get today. THere is a post I made on bartopmania.com/index.php?t=msg&th=873&start=0& that shows you the proper IC to remove. I found this all out only after making this one, but used this method on my Robotron. A good idea for you is to post your progress somewhere online so I can follow and help you through some tough spots if you like. First, don;t cut out the battery compartment, you can use 4 C cells to run it!!! As for the the usb charger make sure it can supply at least 750 mA for both the pi and screen together. Awesome!

    • @embryon1111
      @embryon1111 9 лет назад

      I'm still not sure on the power sources. The tvt and pi can BOTH run together on either 4c batteries, or a mivro usb charger, or a rechargeable drill battery. Mmmm......interesting. Anyways - what I am about to order the following. . . .tell me what you think. . .

    A mass marketed toy is not a historic relic. Be real. People who are pissed off about this are pissed off because they’re collectors and this adds scarcity to what they collect. Going apeshit on a guy who takes a busted toy he bought on eBay for $50 and turns it into the version of the toy any of us would have wanted when we were kids needs to face up to the fact that their interests do not take priority over any one else’s interests. Just stop. You want to preserve all these old Coleco games, even the broken and abused ones? Buy them. Simple.

      Huh??? I think I missed something.

  • @catdespira2238
    @catdespira2238 8 лет назад

    You just destroyed a rare 80s collectible. You're no different than a "flipper", those opportunistic scavengers who take rare arcade games, strips and guts them, throws in a flat screen and 60 in 1 card and then tries to sell them as "classics" to suckers too naive to realize they are buying something absolutely worthless with no future market value. Arcade games and novelties from the period, if not left in original state, lose tremendous value almost at once.
    As an arcade cultural historian and researcher, as well as an arcade game collector and preservationist, I don't mince words with people who destroy and devalue classic arcade games and 80s gaming artifacts for profit. What you've done and what you promote is negligible and horrible. You and your company are now on my radar as a "flipper".

    • @madconservativecrimefighte9456
      @madconservativecrimefighte9456 8 лет назад

      I associate flipping with house remodeling...not this.

    • @catdespira2238
      @catdespira2238 8 лет назад

      "Flippers" is a term used often in classic arcade preservation circles. Flippers are people who take arcade games, gut them and put in flat screens and multicades, sand the original side art off, slap on a cheezy sticker and sell a dead classic for top dollar to naive people who think they've bought a unit that will hold its value. Flippers destroy classic arcade games for profit because oftentimes the parts piecemeal (especially boards and joysticks) are worth more than the entire unit on the retail market. So the flipper makes money off gutting the game and selling the original parts and then again off making a multicade out of the cabinet.
      The guy above sort of did that with that 1981 one-time issue piece of gaming history. And he, too, did it for profit with absolute zero regard for what he was destroying. That unit usually goes for $150-$200 but in the box mint $400. His new "reconditioned piece" is worth nothing to a collector of arcade memorabilia and collectibles. He ruined it.

    • @nbhenry1647
      @nbhenry1647  8 лет назад +2

      Seems you and Mad Concervative Crimefighter have taken aim at this, which is fine. But remember that I do collect as well. We aren't talking about rare games here, there were millions of these scattered through the world. Second, they can be purchased for $25 to $45 on ebay. Good or excellent condition ones go for around $100. I doubt anyone would buy one for more that $150 unless it is still sealed and in original box. Third, there is a demand for what I do here, I rebuild the broken ones to something people want. Yes, I do profit, but understand the amount of dedicated work that it takes to put these together. THere is a demand for them and I'm filling it. I have the full line of these in great shape and I wouldn't even consider gutting them to make them into something else. Others I find, however, that look like they been dragged through a dirt puddle without any sort of care from the original owner can be made to look new again. Please understand that I love these games too. I'm not a mindless grunt that has dollar signs in my eyes. If you saw the work I do on my other builds then you will see my devotion to actually keep these around for as long as anybody can!

    • @catdespira2238
      @catdespira2238 8 лет назад

      Your "devotion" is for the sake of profit and not preservation. Although you have the right to seek commerce as you see fit, keep in mind that that does not protect you from criticism.

    • @madconservativecrimefighte9456
      @madconservativecrimefighte9456 8 лет назад +1

      I disagree on these costing 25-50 on ebay...prices have shot up across the board.
