  • What a finish!
Anthony Van Dyck prevails in a thrilling finish to the 240th running of the Investec Derby, with the first five home separated by just a length and wide across the track in a memorable conclusion to the greatest Classic of them all at Epsom.
Anthony Van Dyck is a remarkable seventh winner in the Epsom Derby for globally-renowned trainer Aidan O'Brien and the Balldoyle operation which has dominated this race in recent years like no other. In the 2019 Epsom Derby, O'Brien trained five of the first six runners home and seven of the first 10 to finish were all trained in Ballydoyle.
While not first-choice jockey at Ballydoyle, Seamie Heffernan is an integral part of the team in Co. Tipperary and this Derby success ranks as one of the undispued highlights of his riding career so far - his 30th victory at Group One level.
The remarkable Galileo - winner of this race in 2001 - has established himself as arguably the greatest thoroughbred stallion in the modern era and Anthony Van Dyck is his fourth winner of the Epsom Derby, following New Approach (2008), Ruler Of The World (2013) and Australia (2014).
2019 EPSOM DERBY FULL FINISHING ORDER:
    1 Anthony Van Dyck (13/2)
    2 Madhmoon (10/1)
    3 Japan (20/1)
    4 Broome (4/1)
    5 Sir Dragonet (11/4F)
    6 Circus Maximus (10/1)
    7 Humanitarian (33/1)
    8 Norway (33/1)
    9 Line Of Duty (25/1)
    10 Sovereign (50/1)
    11 Hiroshima (150/1)
    12 Bangkok (9/1)
    13 Telecaster (5/1)

So people are suggesting Aiden O'Brien should be limited in the number of runners he has in the Derby? If he was limited to 3 runners there would have been 9 runners & you think that would have made the race better? Which 4 horses should he have scratched? The winner, the 3rd, the 4th, the 5th the 6th or the other 2? How does it make the Derby a better race by doing that? He won most of the Derby trials- was 1st & 2nd in a few. If he didn't run them all the people who are complaining he disrespected the race by running too many would be arguing he devalued the race by not running the trial winners.
    Good grief.

I think people just get fucked off that they never get the AOB runners right. Straight up yeah, I don't think he knows which is his best horse sometimes. I was on sir Dragonet and I still think its a better horse than AVD, just didn't happen today. To even suggest restricting an owner to one or two is ridiculous. AOB just happens to have a sick amount of horses that are up to the grade... What do we suggest, trainer equality where random trainers get to punt horses that are listed quality at best just to make up numbers. Lol. Bollox 😂

Japan had a troubled trip or may have ended up winning this race too, because he was closing faster than anything else in the field. Since this race he's won the G2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal-Ascot at his own leisure, coming home in almost a cantor in that race, and has beaten some of the top French middle distance 3YO's to win the G1 Grand Prix de Paris. Even though he got just denied here at Epsom, I think he's looked like the most talented middle distance 3YO colt that O'Brien has in the yard at Ballydoyle so far this season and I won't be at all surprised if the 3YO weight for age break he'll be getting at York in the Juddmonte International proves to be all that Crystal Ocean wants and then some, IMO.

    cheers,
habitat was unplaced in his first race & then finished 2nd when heavily odds on 2nd time out, but he became the best miler in europe that same season, while see the stars only finished 4th in his first race, but those who beat him didn't go on to become superstars like him.
it was both comedy & phoenix' first race as 2yo's, when the latter was still young & raw, but he improved to run both too darn hot & grecia magna close in the autumn.
in ireland recently, he thrashed both those horses by 3 lengths & more.
i don't doubt that comedy is not a good horse but he has not met anything as comparable this season so far.
however, it will be a mouth watering clash i'm sure.

This year's Derby looked bog standard. The abysmal running of the two fancied English trained runners (who couldn't even beat the 1OO/1 no-hoper) didn't help matters. Btw the winner of the Melbourne Cup is probably in there somewhere.

after today's derby, i think 'phoenix of spain' must be the best 3yo in europe, although i believe persian king is running tomorrow in france.
broome looked a shade unlucky today but the st. leger will probably be his target, as with humanitarian; these two could meet in the queens vase at royal ascot or york in august before then; the others in the derby, may clash again in the irish derby or the king edward at ascot.
watch out for pablo escobarr, nate the great & cape francais, 2nd, 3rd & 4th in the lingfield trial behind anthony van dyck.
ps, i backed annapura & avd, both winners of the trials at lingfield.

Broome had clear run 4f up the straight. Never hampered... Okay had to go wide round the field, but didn't seem to affect him. Think he's just an out and out stayer? Further they went the closer he got. Others would argue should've been placed closer to the pace.

Dreadful Derby. If they ran that race ten times, you'd probably get eight different winners. Dettori or Atzeni would have won on Mahdmoon

Debtori would definitely have won on Sir Dragonet. Third Group 1 this week where Moore went too early. Clearly, he doesn't learn from his mistakes. Hayes extracted every last ounce from Madmoon. He out rode everyone else in the finish. Another quality Irish jockeys. Actually, Hayes probably have won on Sir Dragonet.

Using times to prove a Derby was a strong Derby is stupid. Lots of poor Derbys have set fast times, because they where run on fast ground with a tail wind. And lots of very strong Derbys have had slow times due to softer ground and a head wind. To many factors come into it, to be using times to prove your point.
Personally my instinct is telling me it wasn’t a vintage Derby, with how bunched the finish was and the form of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd going into the Derby. But I think it would be wise to wait and see how they get on later in the season before jumping to any conclusions
