  • "The rest are doo-doo!" Coming off his victory at the 1996 ITF World Championship, Total Eclipse (Keith Bailey) wrecks shop at the 1997 DMC American Final, Club Vinyl, NYC, April 15th. Bailey was one of the heavy favorites going into the competition (along with East Coast champ DJ Craze), but finished runner-up to DJ Slyce, who came from nowhere to grab the title.

      No doubt, but I still think Craze would've taken the title if he hadn't had that problem with the needle. Maybe things worked out for the best, because if Craze had won, he would've beaten A-Trak at the World Final, and A-Trak may not have returned to the battle again, in '98, which means he may never have joined the Allies, etc, etc. It's like something from 'Back to the Future'!

  • @IndieDJ

    In my opinion, he probably would’ve won had he showcased his scratching more. Crab scratching was the new fad at the time and every championship routine had it then. Kind of like with vert skate comps of the later 80’s, where you wouldn’t stand a chance if you didn’t do a McTwist. But anyway, Slyce showcased dope juggling and crab scratching. So I’d imagine the judges viewed him as the more complete DJ. I believe this would be a recurring thing in the world final as well. In my opinion, DJ Akakabe was by far the most skilled DJ. Yet he didn’t even place in the top three. Most likely because he had no scratch solo whatsoever. However, the top three DJs all did tons of scratching. Most notably the winner (A-trak) who went heavy on…you guessed it, crab scratching. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    The trick at 3:14 can be dated all the way back to cash moneys 1988 dmc eliminations set when he used "Im Bad" by LL Cool J, where he spun around, and perfectly timed it to where he would stop and land on the beginning of the track, Pretty soon, Miz would pick up on this and use it in his dmc sets the next year with Steady B's "let the hustlers play" and obviously with cash being one of miz's biggest influences, he followed in his tracks. philly aside, this trick was done by a battle DJ from the bronx dubbed "ekim" in the 1990 northeast regionals, 1 year later the trick was then used by multiple members of a group called the "xmen" with Sean C, Rob Swift, Roc raida (RIP) and Mista Sinista doing their own versions of the trick while still having the same concept.

      Did you battle? I battled, on and off, from '97 to '03. I should've really been on the '99 UK DMC Final tape, but was well and truly robbed by the judges at one of the UK heats that year.

    • @jonathanbailey1597
      @jonathanbailey1597 6 лет назад +1

      J-Boogie Brown I did battle sporadically. Did the 2000 Birmingham DMC regionals. It was a farce, and the DMC lot turned up hours late, were rude and dismissive but it was a laugh. I was well oiled by the time I went on. I met DJ Quest there who won the nationals in 2003. I got him a few gigs off the back of it. I was more interested in doing local stuff and running my night, but battling was good. I used to know everyone back then, Perverts, Gimps, they all played at my monthly. Halcyon days!

      To be fair, the competition was so crazy and close for DMC 1997. I remember watching my VHS tape for the first time and I thought Total Eclipse was gonna win, but then Slyce did that Billy Jean routine. I've never seen or heard a beat juggle like that, off of a Michael Jackson song, no less. You can even hear everyone in the audience gasping and someone shouting "who's fucking with that?" after he finishes the juggle. The wow factor of that funky beat juggle was too much. And don't get me wrong, Craze also destroyed that year. To me, 1997 was the best year for DMC DJ Battles. Craze, Total, Slyce, Shortkut, Mysterio, it's too much. The funk and showmanship is what I really miss about DJ Battles nowadays.
