The Most Iconic Ferrari: The F40 | The Big Thing with Magnus Walker - Ep 6

  • In this episode of “The Big Thing,” Magnus Walker is behind the wheel of what many would argue is the most iconic Ferrari ever made: The F40. The supercar with Enzo's personal blessing is perhaps one of the most instantly recognizable machines ever made and still, to this day, brings out strong emotional reactions for people on the street, as well as those lucky enough to be behind the wheel. These reasons and more are why Magnus considers it to be "The Big Thing."

    Minor correction for 5:10 - the 288 GTO Evoluzione wasn't made for Group B rallying, but for Group B circuit racing (similar regulations, different discipline), which unfortunately never took off. The same applies for the Porsche 959 and Jaguar XJ220.

      Really? Group B circuit racing? I love the group b rally era and the cars, I've seen a bunch of RUclips videos about group b rally, but I don't think I remember hearing about group b circuit racing! Somehow I missed that....

    • @KouneliSPL
      @KouneliSPL 2 года назад +2

      @@steventhompson399 It's really easy to miss, in part because people love to romanticize Group B rally so much to the point where any passing mention of any of the cars intended for road racing gets automatically attributed to rally. It's probably best to look for resources outside of RUclips if you want to learn about it in a bit more detail.

    A curiosity, the first F40 made in 1987 "between 20 to 25 units" before the new traffic rules of 1988, had the same power as the 288 GTO EVO "over 650hp" and were even lighter around 1080kg than the F40 manufactured after 1988 onwards, it had a maximum speed above 370km/h and did the 0-100km/h in the 3s flat! And the F40 is a hypercar of the time! The 288 GTO is considered the first hypercar of the world! And the story that no one has ever been able to reach 201mp/h is a BIG LIE!! A test back in 1988 done in Germany actually reached almost 211mp/h with a customer car! The Americans love to repeat that lie, so you are not american do do the same! Great content , amazing edition!

    • @Orcawhale1
      @Orcawhale1 2 года назад +7

      1. Those cars were special customers, who had requested more powerfull versions.
      Which would later form the basis for the LM and Competizione spec.
      2. The 288 GTO is not a supercar, it's a homologation special, there's a difference.
      3. The F40 is a supercar, not hypercar.
      4. The customer car story count as anecdotal tale, by a biased person.
      (F40's designer).
      If your going to parrot the F40 designer interview.
      Atleast make sure you get the facts correct.

    Great to see this car again, but the video was a bit short and less emotional than the previous Porsche video. In that one, you could feel the love that Magnus has for Porsches. It made it through the screen and held your interest as the story unfolded. Here I was left wanting more story and more feeling. Both were cut short.
    I suspect the owner of the car put limitations on where the car could go, or how long you had to drive it.

The F40 is indeed THE most special, unique and desirable Ferrari of all times, and I'm confident that status won't be broken any time soon, not even after 2037 at it's 50th anniversary. Because the first can only be the first, and a first can never be done again. Even the rarer and also very special F50 can't keep up with the F40's status.

      @TenMillionYearProgram42 2 года назад +1

      Double the F40?! That’s insane. The F40 is a legend; the F50 the sequel people say is ok if you’re a diehard… definitely would not expect it to fetch double what the F40 did. Maybe it’s a rarity thing? Ferrari kinda just ran with the F40, to the tune of around 1300 units. I think the F50 was limited to a few hundred. Certainly not the car the F40 was. F50 was sorta thought of as a”Big, ugly, vibrating piledriver of a thing,” to quote Jeremy Clarkson.

    There is footage of it apparently doing 200 MPH on the Autobahn but I know early speedometers can be quite optimistic. Hopefully somebody will be able to test that. I heard that the F40s we got in the USA were slightly more powerful but that’s because they were heavier with emissions junk. So maybe a US spec engine in a Euro spec F40 would likely be able to do 200 mph.

    I've never driven a Ferrari, but just judging by the specs I think I'd like the F50 better than the F40. Its got the V12 and the magnificent sound that comes with that engine, but it still has a manual transmission and is probably more raw to drive than the comparatively modern and polished Enzo. And cars like the 250 GTO are out of the question, I'd be too scared of damaging them to enjoy driving them.

    The predecessor (288 GTO) was made for Group B Racing (not rally, obviously), much like the 959. However this series never got going.
    F40 did do 200mph tho, and then some.

    My 2 favorite cars of all time are the Ferrari F40 and the McLaren F1. If I had to choose 1, I might have to go with the F40 just because it is just so damn sexy.

    The car is garish in a lot of ways. It doesn't look like it would be that stable going fast. It looks more like a car that some kid Drew up. But it is so distinctive. I don't know how close I ever was to one of them. When I was a teen I delivered papers and there was this family who had multiple Ferraris parked outside. They probably had a dealership I just remember them having a driveway that could hold three cars width wise and two cars lengthwise. There were always Ferraris there. But never an f40. In the same area I remember a lm002. It was one of the smaller houses in the neighborhood if not the smallest and parked in the middle of the driveway is a Rambo Lambo.
    I went to the LA Auto show the year the 959 was introduced they had a special whole section for it. I thought that was the car.

    Great content, Ferrari is the geeatest sportscar marque of all time.
    F40 is my favourite non American of all time. I was like 9 or 10 when it came out and for me it is the GOAT , the F1 is also the same status.

    The Enzo was on my wall and the center of my love for ferrari as a kid, but as I get older the F40 and the 458 speciale have probably de-throned the Enzo.

    F40 was very good. I dug the 312/512 BB Boxer but it was compromised with a tranny arrangement that gave it a high CG. F40 was low and had that crazy molded wing thing like a superbird. I think a guy figured out how to swap the belts without dropping it - was it 'ragarossa'? So I bought one in 1;18 on my first tour of St Louis. That hobby shop is gone I think. Thanks Mag for putting Gillette out of business - hate those guys.
