Why does the shul look like a Catholic Church? We don't light candles like that. And where's the mechitzah?

"tuttay" is what you get when neither the director, actress nor script supervisor is Jewish. Only question is, how did David Groh let it slide?

I'm pretty sure the white power guy wasn't really a nazi either, David Duchovny wasn't really an FBI agent, and that reanimated dead into golems isn't actually possible. That's the beauty of theatre, of acting, of make-believe. People pretending to be something for the sake of the play. That is one of the things that separates fiction from things like documentaries.

@@tolo84 Theatre is beautiful when the dramaturgy is competent, not so much when you have an actress pronouncing a word wildly incorrectly multiple times in a scene. If you have non-English words in your script, you need someone with a knowledge of that language to go over it with the cast. I'm not saying, as you seem to think, that Jewish characters can only be played by Jewish actors; I'm saying that having one cast or crew member with a basic understanding of Yiddish could have saved them from blowing this.

@@babababad Yeah ideally there would have been actual speakers, but I don't think they blew it by mispronunciation as long as the spirit of what they were trying for was intact. Which, to me as a non Jewish person, it seemed to be. However as a Scandinavian I'm brutally accustomed to people mispronouncing my language in film and shows, so whenever they show anything of us I'm just happy for that reason alone. They probably just were looking for cool story ideas when the topic of golems came up. The Calusari episode is very much that way too.

You are both right! There are so many great quality scenes in murder mysteries, thrillers, romantic literature and dramas in old cathedrals and churches - its great to see a top quality x file ending in a synagogue. Oprah once said that the answer to breaking down prejudice (back when she use to be great, she read one book a week and before she was corrupted) was do normal shows, stories and just casually have black, gay, jewish, Chinese characters being treated EXACTLY the same way. I could probably find footage of her saying that if I dug deep. she was so right. Chris Carter developed an amazing show here - simply one of a kind. he had many episodes about the African community eating livers and living for hundreds of years, the Native American Indian community turning into werewolves, the gay community being aliens that seduce everyone and get aphrodisiac clay from underground, the jewish community suffering loss and raising the dead as a sort of Frankenstein... as well as good old white Protestants turning into radioactive fluke worms in storm water drains. ha ha. I mean the guy was AMAZING. he didn't leave anyone out. it was all in the true unapologetic spirit of unending determination of searching for the paranormal. and the two leads were very chalk and cheese. Duchovny was a Russian Jew and Anderson was an Anglican Brit. Their chemistry was amazing. The Jewish woman who is the grieving bride in this episode is beautiful, I love her character and she plays it well. But all of Chris Carters episodes contain the cast mispronouncing Native American words, Japanese words, Yiddish words, Chinese words, and especially Russian words - its funny and a tad juvenile - but the X files wouldn't be the X files without it, and the nativity is a blanket equity (as Oprah mentioned). NONE of these plots or characters are cheap! they are brilliant diamonds, just a bit rough.

@babababad I agree, but understand--this was pre-internet. Short of digging up a Hebrew speaking Orthodox Jew to hang out on set--and paying them a large fee that could blow the budget for the episode-- this was the best they could do. It's a really beautiful episode.
