Probably one of, if not the biggest design flaw in Fox and SN chassis is the K member bolt holes and random openings on the wheel side allowing dust, dirt, water, and salt into the frame rails.
Been there done that, I even replaced the steel tubes inside there on each side. Got materials from steel warehouse. This was a job at work that just came in for paint. The owner had no idea it was rotten.
Great work! That subframe is stronger now than it was out of the factory. I've got similar issues with my 96 Camaro, so I feel your pain brother. Keep up the Awesome work!
The strut towers on my 91 5.0 are in sorry shape. In the five years i have owned it, I have never driven it in the winter on our salty Indiana roads. Seeing this repair being done is quite motivational. I will try to tackle this job only after my 69 Torino is on the road......That one is another story! Thanks man!
AXE HEAD i got a 87 fox gt with 33k original miles 3rd owner but frame rails are as bad as the one in the video except both sides 😑 not sure what im gonna do with it
I have the same car ,2001 gt has the same prob. But I took a piece 1and a half by 2inches square stock 1/8 inch thick tubing and put that in the frame rail to stuffing it up too.
Was looking through your vids showing a friend of mines and came back to this vid. I got rust in my passenger tower and a few other places in my clean fox ill have to address down the line.
I'm ignorant of all the body work you're doing. What happens to the surface rust that seemingly goes in between some of the panels you're welding on? Do you treat it as well?
I'm not a professional or anything but I just replaced the frame on my mustang and had to fab up the the rust spots on both frame rails but those spacers for your kmember bolts were too big in diameter it's best to use something the almost the same diameter of the bolts so the bolts don't shimmy cause I made the same mistake
depends on how bad it is and if you are repainting the entire bay. the more/better work you do you can charge more. you have to figure out what your time is worth then price it. I charge about $2k for a job like this and repaint bay.
Yep that surface rust should have been blasted ,treated and painted IMO,especially where you have mating surfaces in a known problem area. That’s just me.
@@bmw171 exactly. Por15 doesn't really work all that well in my experience. If anything blast paint then once reassembled use a healthy coating of cavity wax with a long application straw.
Could take it a step further and hit rust treated pieces with weld through primer. Once completed follow up with internal frame coat like the one from Eastwood. Overkill is a good thing in this problem area for sure. Imo
I would really either turn up the welder or if you're using CO2 gas I would switch to stargon co2/argon mix. It will give you a much nicer, weld and better penetration. I would've also welded slugs in before you put the side pieces on and treated the metal really good and painted inside of the frame. nice effort, but not the way I would've done it. Sorry for being so critical. I'm doing the same thing on my son's 90 Fox.
I love it when people say nice work but the welds don't look that great.well it thin weld with layered metal it's not easy to work with trust me it not easy to weld been welding for 22 years
Why would you not sand and treat the inside rust? I’m doing same thing in my back yard and decided while I’m in there to treat the rust so no future issues. Por 15 is garbage rust Oleum rust reformer black with RP- 342 will do the trick and last.
I've been down the rubberized route, it never works, even tried "2 part" when I was in autobody trade, I've experimented with rustoleum with hardener out of a gun and its amazing lol, the red primer, "rustoleum rusty metal primer", with some hardener I had kicking around, way tough,
Is this a common problem? My 94 has lived its entire life in Texas. I haven't notice any rust, but now I'm concerned, it's a convertible and has been caught topless several times in the rain back in the aughts. Carpet was replaced about 6 years ago, and I still didn't notice any rust. The car has seen snow, but they use sand on the roads, and we're talking like maybe 3 days in its life it's been driven in it.

I have a tiny hole above the k member bolt and the plate itself that metal is only surface rust, so imma get that to bare metal but can I just replace the backside and replace it while the strut and stuff is still in the car?
Is it just me or does this guy do have ass work like all the fiberglass filler in another video instead of welding the panels fully and now not cleaning up the metal on the inside and using weld threw primer along with not welding the patch plate all the way around when it was clear some of the structure had been compromised more than likely I don’t know what I am talking about

nice video, i do notice you welds are not that great. Should turn the heat up and push the weld into the metal.

Great work! Thanks for showing us how it's done!
nice job on this repair. i did pretty much the same thing on my 94, but i didnt have the k-member removed.
awesome video. I literally quit on my Mustang because I had concerns about this area. As soon as the weather warms back up I'm going to get back at it

Thanks for the video- this is the best how to on RUclips

Solid work, man.
I thought you were going to put por15 on the rust
damn good job brought it back
Had to fix the exact same spot on my new edge was a good weekend project
Nathan Howe how'd it turn out?
Turned out pretty good. I cut out all the bad areas and just welded a patch over it. Im not going as far as you did with the mudding
@@tkoresto Is it possible to weld a whole front end on? I have a guy trying to sell me a front end.
I need to find a dedicated shop like yours, here down south

Excellent job. Where are you located?
I'm ignorant of all the body work you're doing. What happens to the surface rust that seemingly goes in between some of the panels you're welding on? Do you treat it as well?
You should step the agent panel, you should never see a weld or seam. If you grind you have just lost most of your weld.

agreed. it was 4am at that point and i used what i had. it will be fine. it should be a lot stronger than the factory ones.
in doupt, you can always use a flat bar as a big washer
He said he welded them in place tho
Im doing the same thing on my 93 fox right now lol
I'm doing the same thing on a sn95, but have no idea what I should charge the guy for it. I'm pretty bad at pricing

Probably not this kind of rust seems to be cause by the salt in the snow belt
Common for mid west or north East cars that see salt heavy
