  • A ride-a-long video showing and explaining the 4wd system of my 2016 Super Duty. I show the electronic rear locker and manual locking hubs, and to operate them with the electronic shift on the fly (ESOF) 4wd system. I also talk about and show the function testing I do with it every month.

Thanks for having this Video, I bought a 2015 F250 Super Duty and there was no instructions on the 4x system, you explained it perfectly

Ford needs to bring back the manual shift on the floor four wheel drive system. Not everyone likes the electric shift on the fly they only offering now. they should get rid of the locking hubs if the electric shift crap is so great.

My f350 has manual 4X4. It's great! I too agree.

Excellent video, thanks! Most people never use their four wheel drive, and never cycle them periodically.. then wonder why it's unreliable when needed. Nice truck!

Old video but... When you manually lock the hubs, the four wheel drive system is connected. Even in two wheel drive. The entire four wheel drive system is turning. It's just being driven by the wheels instead of the transfer case. It absolutely does cause wear and tear on the four wheel drive system even in two wheel drive. Don't lock the hubs unless you think you'll need four wheel drive on that trip.

I always heard, and do, that periodically on straight pavement you should engage the 4x4for half mile or so to keep everything lubed and functional.
Only while going straight down the road - no turns.

I do that on my 2004 f150 just to check it out. Didn't know you had to do it. Just bought a 2020 f250 and trying to get info about it

I like this RUclips Video better than any of the others posted. I have a 2012 F-250 Lariat and I thought my "On the Fly was working but after engaging the "On the Fly" it seemed to be giving me a On Dash warning, that I was not driving fast enough???

No. Hub goes from auto to locked.

  • @thomassanders7540

If the front driveshaft is turning does that auto medically mean that the front is in four-wheel-drive or can it be that the hubs are still not lacking

Will the rear locker stay on at any speed or will it automatically kick off at a certain speed? Thanks for the video.

+David Hillbrand good question....I don't recall there being anything in the owners manual about it...and I'm not going to test it out! My guess is that it would stay on up to any reasonable speed. But I would be seriously concerned about damage and loss of control if you were going very fast and made any amount of a turn.

David Hillbrand if I remember correctly it kicks off at over 45mph

David Hillbrand well 25 26 miles an hour the real Walker will block itself and come back on around 20 miles an hour it's a new owners manual

The eletric rear locker usually turns off at about 20 MPH and will give a notification.
And please do yourself a favor and don't use it on dry pavement, something will give, most likely your diff or axle.

This guy doesnt know what hes talking about ford had locking hubs while there wasnt electronic 4wd to lock the hub is almost like a locking diff

    • @DennysCountryLife
      @DennysCountryLife 6 лет назад +7

A locking diff is totally different from locking hubs. Manual locking hubs do not turn an open diff into a locking diff. It just allows the axle shafts to transfer power to the wheels. In these trucks with the locking diff option, it actually makes both rear tires spin under all circumstances, unlike a posi-traction or open diff. If you don't know the difference, posi is not the same as a locking rear diff either.
