My favorite Baltic capital by far, loved my time there!
So did we :)
I’m in Vilnius right now. We drove here yesterday from Riga and I gotta say this city beats Riga any time. The old town is so clean and the buildings in such good condition that one has to love it. Everything is cute and beautiful and near and for a Catholic traveller this city is full of amazing places like the chapel of Divine Mercy where the original painting is placed. A city full of amazing churches with a lovely park by a cooling stream. Cafes and restaurants are all around. Service is better than in Latvia and people don’t try to screw you over. Nothing is crowded except for the bar street at night. A fantastic family holiday location.
I Just came back from vilnius and nida. Fabulous city.
Wow the Baltic states (Latvia,Lithuania,Estonia) Seem interesting
they are. i lived in lithuania for 3.5 years and got to explore a lot
GeneralSPatton Games Ya i agree.. Im going to check it,out
@@woltersworld Where didn't you live??
Yesss we are going there very soon all the way from Australia . ❤ thanks
Have a good trip!
Thanks so much! :-)
Hope you enjoy it. Past few days we have rain, but it should stop now and sun will rise again :)
Haha, have a good time! The rain is over and gone over here haha :)
Wolter did great job naming the top places, but also try to visit Hill of Crosses and Romuva!
Hey Mark i love this,video.. Its a different city than the popular typical cities.. nice to see a smaller one get some credit. Lithuania is on my to see list
Glad we could show some other places
How exciting to see Lithuania. My grandparents were Lithuanian, some day I want to go there!!
Good idea is to go from Vilnius to Kaunas. Then take boat trip to Nida (amazing trip not to long and can see many beautify nature) and from Nida to Klaipeda many buses
Druskininkai, Birstonas is great place for cheap and great SPA day (30€ per person with one treatment, accommodation and breakfast)
Thank you for doing a video of Lithuania! It's a small unknown country and it's always nice to see it get recognition! Would love to see a 5 things you'll love/hate to get a foreigners perspective.
I was told all my life that my ancestors came from Poland. A couple of years ago, I came across my great grandfathers draft card and it said his birthplace was Wilna, Poland. Not knowing where that was, I looked it up and had a hard time finding it. Eventually I found out that it is no longer Wilna, Poland but Vilnius, Lithuania. Would be nice to go there and see the land of my ancestors even though it is no longer Poland.
Possibly because the Vilnius county was occupied by Poland.
@@eimantas314-rblxOccupied? Between 1922-1945 Wilno was in Poland and was a major administrative center.
@@pawelpap9 because poland occupied Wilno
We love and enjoy tourists, so please come visit 😀✌🏼
By far the BEST travelling channel ever. Thanks for your great know-how and humor. Great tips, as always!
Thank you :)
You got the life, Mark! I love all of your vids! Thank you!
Im going to Vilnius tomorrow. That video helped alot. Thanks !
Vilnius looks gorgeous!! My great grandfather is from Vilnius and I can't wait to visit someday.
Lithuania love
aciu
Perfect timing! Heading there for first time in two weeks.
Have a great trip
I'm in Vilnius right now! It's beautiful♥
ooh Vilnus looks nice
It is :)
Lithuania is definitely on my bucket list! You're such a great inspiration for my channel. Keep it up Mark :)
I went there last year. If you hang around there at 2am there's this weird drunk guy who tries stealing phones. I tried getting the police involved but they did nothing. Be vigilant.
I liked Kaunas better actually. nice train station, nice people. Very hilly
Hi. If I go to Lithuania, can I find my family history/records? My Grandparents left Vilnius around 1910 to come to America as did a lot of other Lithuanians. I don't know the reasons why, but many came to work in eastern Pennsylvania in the coal mines. Would I be able to look up records on my family someplace there? Thank you.
Joseph Krizauskas not sure where maybe just maybe you can get some information from "Martyno mažvydo biblioteka" its one pf the biggest librarys and they very big storages of lithuanian history. By the way most people that left lithuania in 1900 to 1990 is bevause SSR and russians, bolshevicks(don't know how to spell it) were attacking and trying to occupy lithuania.Maybe thats why
P.s. sorry for bad english im 12 year old
Wow so unexpected. I waching videos on your channels and booom new upload covering my country. Nice !
:)
Lithuania is my ancestor's homeland from 100 years ago, so I need to go
That's cool. It's really fun to visit the homeland. We always get a kick out of seeing where our families are from
Me too. My great grandparents came over to the states from there around the same time. Definitely want to pay a visit sometime soon
@For Land Why are you going trough videos on Vilnius and comment shit like this? You poles have *no* dignity.
@For Land You can also educate people on how poles are racist bigots who are leeching off EU and don't show a single spec of respect to them. Or how you tried to kill the lithuanian language and culture in general.
You got what you deserved. C'est ça.
The most EU money? What?.. A shithole? According to you I would guess, which isn't credible at all. If we look at the facts, Lithuania has a higher GDP/capita than Poland, don't even bother, not to mention Vilnius has a higher quality of life than Warsaw.
You are fueled by anger and fail to account for the facts. That's the problem with you poles, that's why no neighbouring country likes you. You are juvenile neo-nazis who live in your own little world. Please leave the EU and stop leeching of it if you won't even think of showing respect.
Also you think pretty high of yourself if you think EU LEECHES of you xD.
Love your videos! Good to see your view about my country! Thanks
Aciu
im planing next summer to visit vilnius, riga and tallin ,thanx for info
I love this town
The Baltic's make for a great travel destination, stayed in Jurmala Latvia last year and had a great time! Really enjoy your videos Mark and look forward to each one!
Jurmala! I was hoping we could get there to film on this trip but it didnt work out. Was there years ago and had a nice time
Wolters World I recommend you take a trip around Latvia. It takes several hours to travel by train or bus from Riga to other cities. Jurmala is good in summer. Sigulda and Gauja national park in autumn, especially in october, when leaves are yellow. If you want to see real latvian traditional holiday go to Latgale in 23-24.06 (Rezekne, Bauska, Daugavpils(here most of people speak russian :)). Ventspils is friendly for children (very many attraction parks are here), an also good if you want take swim in Baltic sea.
With ❤ from Riga, Latvia.
I'm looking forward to staying there in September. I always check out your tips first before I go somewhere new! I'll be flying with Ryanair from the UK, which wouldn't have been my first choice, but it was very reasonably priced. By the way, I loved Helsinki. I got back from there last week. The biggest surprise for me was that everybody I met spoke English!
Just watched a video on Vilnius and it looks amazing definitely worth the trip very nice
Thank you for going to Lithuania!
I lived there for a number of years and it was so much fun going back
I'm Lithuanian, but I've lived in the US for all my life (adopted), and I yearn to go back to learn my roots. I've visited before when I was young, but I hope to come back.
I appreciate all the things you touched on, thank you.
glad we could :)
You are very welcome
Children might like "Vilnius toy museum"(google). You might see historical and soviet time toys. Allowed to play with most. Just behind the corner near the Cathedral square.
Most people don't know that you can visit TV tower and can have a great view. If you have binoculars you might see Belarus.
Anykščiai is a great place to visit with kids. Especially the outdoor "Anykščiai maze park"(google). There are plenty of other activity around. Though it is more suitable for a car travelers. It is easy to make a pit-stop on a Vilnius-Riga road.
ahh the beautiful architecture and rich history of Lithuania! such a gem. don't know what i'm doing with my life, I need to go backpacking through this place! :D
It is a cool spot for a weekend visit
So helpful Mark thanks so much 👊🏼
I'm surprised you didn't show any pictures up on the hill. The views from up there are absolutely gorgeous. I loved Vilnius and I went there in the dead of winter.
Your videos are legendary
Thank yoh
One of the most inspiring cities in Europe.
Thanks for the cool tips!!!
i am lithuanian and lived in Vilnius for 9 years. everything what has been said in video is so true! especially marking your bus tickets.... those guys who check if the tickets are valid are really rude so make sure your tickets are validated or you will get in trouble!
Thank you Mark.....part of next years trip involves Riga..Vilnius and Tallinn .....just a taste of the Baltics...Plan Amsterdam...either Hamburg or Koln .......then a wk in our beloved Berlin......then on to the the Baltics......keep the vids happening.....love to learn more about Amsterdam....and Riga.....from Australia...xxoo
Well hopefully I'll have all our Baltic videos out soon
really want to learn more about the Baltics.......our little dilemma is more after Amsterdam....now i recently saw a vid you did on Frankfurt the 10 things youll love or hate about Frankfurt kind of put us off.....for all the right reasons....so before heading to our Beloved Berlin for a wk...its a toss up between either Hamburg or Koln do you have a vid on Hamburg?.....and i will make a promise here that when we do go back to Berlin i will try the infamous Currywhurst....in which i only found out about 3 months after we got back from Europe 2017.....when i started following your Vlogs.....Your Vlogs are great...i love them all.....you make alot of sense with your tips....keep up the good work.......regards from Australia
Some great tips! Going to try and make it there next year
It's worth a visit
More videos about Baltic countries please : )
I have plenty more coming :)
Mark, I am planing a 7 to 9 day trip to the 3 Baltic states, any tips for an Itinerary Baltic trip?
I wish you would do more videos on the balkan region...i think that place has some amazing sites
I am heading back next summer for Serbia and Slovenia. Will have more Croatia videos out later this summer
how bout albania
I have been to Lithuania and I will go to the other baltic capitals this year. Public transportation worked very well and we used 4 euros in total for our traveling costs becasue we only used the buses and in 2015 it only cost 1 euro for a one way ticket :) I think it would be a cool idea to try to cover al the Baltic capitals in one mabey 10-14 days vaccation.
Great city and very cheap need to go back soon .
wow I was there the same time you are! wished I knew!
Great tips, we go in september to the baltic states
By car from holland
Awesome. Have fun!
Driving the Baltic states is a fun experience. As of this moment, Lithuania seems to be the only one building motorways that are 4 lanes and divided. So far Klaipeda to Vilnius is completed but projects out from Vilnius to Panevezys to the border and Kaunas to Panevezys aren't really complete yet. Still, a lot of progress has been made. Latvia and Estonia on the other hand will be fun.
Greetings from Ottawa! Great video, as always! Lithuania is definitely on my list, was in Riga a couple years ago and loved it. How many nights do you recommend in Vilinius? I’m hoping to go next year as part of a possible Poland / Finland / Stockholm trip.
Just a weekend will take care of you.
Wolters World thank you!
Im lithuanian and i say go to Šventoji its near tge sea its rlly cool there. Warning it has tons of people... so stay in Vilnius
Going for a week at the beginning of October while I travel eastern and central Europe.
Cool. Have a fun time
Thanks, I definitely will. Part of a 7 week trip from Finland, through the Baltics, then link up with a friend in Krakow and head to Prague, Vienna, Slovenia and Croatia.
thanks sir,, i am coming 2019 March 25
When Wolters World posts a video for a place you are visiting next week :-)
:) it's our traveling soul connection :)
Thank you Wolter! Planning a visit soon wow St Anne’s Church ! Catholicism is alive there!
Visiting Vilnius was probably one of my most interesting trips even though I only went there for like 7 hours and walked around mostly in the old town. For me who comes from a fairly rich country (Sweden) seeing the buildings and the arcitecture outside the window on the airport train and outside old town was quite a contrast compared to the center or back home. Almost every building seemed to be in a very bad shape but just to experience that contrast for me was an experience itself. Well worth a trip to Vilnius even if it's just for the day.
Lol I'm from the us (the supposed best country in the world) and I actually think the buildings in Lithuania look a lot better than the ones in the states
@@cisco999 lol the US is not even close to being in the top 10 countries in the world
Wondering if anyone can help me out. Is it cheaper to pay for a hotel/hostel upfront when we arrive or beforehand in the Uk? Thanks in advance?
Church of St. Peter and St. Paul are the most interesting church in Vilnius :)
I like finland but cheaper unusual cities are great go before the main stream
I was surprised by all the luxury shops , cooped a nice EA7 tracki hahahaha
The thing i like the most about Vilnius is its low density, 200 year old wooden architecture, cute little buildings and green spaces. Sadly locals do not appreciate these things and often wooden houses are demolished and trees cut down to make way for boring dense and tall glass cubes that you can find anywhere in the world. :(
When I look at Riga where I live I think that in Riga we do not really appreciate what we have. I always love visiting Vilnius because seems like you there care more about the tiny details and fixing up stuff even if it might not seem super remarkable. Plus, it is nice to relax in that low density, 2-3 floor old town part as Riga with its turn of the last century ''canyons'' of the huge and splendid buildings (but many still in bad shape) does not allow you to relax as much. I think Riga still is the most interesting of all the Baltic capitals architecture wise (yeah not much of baroque which is why I prefer Vilnius to Tallinn in Baltics, as the Tallinn old town is pretty much the same as the one in Riga), but the thing about Vilnius is that for a long time after the glory years of the Polish Lithuanian commonwealth it was sort of a backwater, which helped to save a lot of the old town, at the same time there is not that much newer architecture like art nouveau and early 20th century functionalism (since Lithuania's capital was Kaunas and they build those buildings in Kaunas). Also Riga has very interesting ''workers'' suburbs further from the center but sadly it is not really a walkable distance for tourists, so it is hard to organize there ''Užupis'' of our own sort for tourists. And generally Riga old town today is mostly a tourist trap, while in Vilnius it seems to be generally more ''local'' and ''alive''
lkrnpk Vilnius old centre still remained its historical cosy feeling. Sadly every year we demolish tens of more than hundred years old wooden houses in historical suburbs that are replaced by modern ones. This means that we will have old baroque town that suddenly ends and after that point we have high glass buildings. We are loosing that historical city transition from old rich people houses in centre and old workers houses around it. Even this year we lost an old town building from late 1700s because it was only one floor high and didn't have any ornamentation or splendour. Some locals though it was just an unusual soviet warehouse and many wanted to see it demolished and replaced by totally black 4 floor high modern building... Some do not appreciate centuries old buildings even after ww2 when we lost so many of them :(
Labas Labas
It seems like people like you just cannot move on with the time. Those old wooden crooked buildings look like a proper slums and bring nothing but the shame to our beautiful city. I view Vilniaus as a modern contemporary dynamic capital and not some WW2 memorial. You have plenty of that in countries like Russia.
baktom city without history losses its value, so does separate city districts. Wooden architecture is very unique (beautiful woodwork, decorations, age, materials), it is only widespread in northern European regions, we must protect it as much as we can and fight against standard boring glass skyscrapers that are built the same all around the world. These new large buildings destroy old town panoramas, make it feel smaller and less important, even though, old town is UNESCO heritage site and the only most important part of Vilnius. If they would built modern buildings further away from historical center and respect heritage there wouldn't be any problems, but for some reason they try to squeeze as many as possible right in the city centre... Moreover, with all these new developments we are destroying these few left precious green spaces :(
After all, why are you comparing our wooden architecture to Russian? There are tons of beautifully restored wooden buildings in very developed countries like Sweeden.
Please don't be short sighted and do some research about wooden architecture heritage in Lithuania. Other countries protect traditional architecture, we must do this as well.
Labas Labas
No one is allowing and no one is building skyscrapers in the old town - there's a new city centre on the right side of the river, no one's crossing that line. Get your facts together.
Hi! Love your channel. What makes Klaipeda cool? Is the service in Lithuania as rude as the rest of Europe? thanks Mark
Is English spoken in Lithuania at restaurants hotels etc.
Thom L you will be fine young generation learn english at school
My wife is Lithuanian, we travel there every year for short holiday. Please dont worry English is widely spoken, especially by the youngsters. Lithuania is a beautiful country and well worth a visit if you've never been.
im from marijampole i recomend coming theres some cool stuff here and its the cleanest city off lithuanija
I was there in July..It was only 58 F..steps from the sopranos restaurant
Do they have Uber or is a taxi better to get around? Do most people in the city speak English well if you don’t know Lithuanian?
Nicholas Sanderson get a free Taxify app it’s better than Uber. That’s what i use when i visit Lithuania it also works in Latvia and Estonia
You were in Lithuania? Such a shame I didnt meet you :(
Vilnius is best to visit on the day of Saint Casimir. You can then buy a lot of local products and handicrafts. Also, it is worth to see the Hill of Crosses, the Sharp Gate and the Ross Cemetery. I have not been there for a long time.
BTW The Grand Duke of Lithuania was often the King of Poland. From 1573 to 1795, all the Grand Dukes of Lithuania were the kings of Poland. Ladislaus IV was also called the King of Sweden and won the crown of the Tsar of Russia.
Szymon Zieliński Wilno was built by Poles.
Arcadius no it wasnt
I must disappoint you. They did not know who they were because there was a different concept of the state. The best example is Adam Mickiewicz himself wrote in Polish, "Litwo Oczyzno Moja". Only today would probably have a Belarusian passport. In the fifteenth century, Lithuanian was dominant in Vilnius, one hundred years later Ruthenian, and in the seventeenth century, Polish. It should be noted that there were no major migratory movements, deportations, etc. You understand this problem.
Aidas Mikalauskas Rus propaganda in school 👍👍
Arcadius lol what kind of russian propoganda would be that? So you now in our society we have very bad opinion about russia. We even banned some of russian tv channels.
Did they fix Gediminas castle?
Bummer... I just got to go up right before they closed it.. anywho, I enjoyed my time in Lithuania. I like how helpful everyone was. My favorite street is Mindaugo G. where that big Maxima is. Lots of hills to walk up!
Walter, did you say you work here? Wishes from the opposide side of the Cathedral:)
I worked in klaipeda and Vilnius for 3 and a half years
I live in here live in Lithuania here
I enjoyed visiting Lithuania a couple of years ago, but I have to say the food outside Vilnius was pretty poor.
Kaunas and Klaipeda are ok as well. But as a Lithuanian I agree with you, best food is in Vilnius! :)
2:53 Wait a minute... Is that Trump wearing Adidas?
Vilnius kinda looks like Greece.
sivalo the sergal Not really it’s just the Cathedral that you see in this vid
But it's much more Italian looking, compared to to other Baltic countries which have German architecture. It's because Italians were the architects of many of the baroque buildings.
WE miss the 5 Loves and hates theme/motif, ...
i've been living in vilnius for 5 months now, why am i watching this 😅
O iš lietuvis?
Make a video about Belgrade , Serbia
Going next summer
looks like a nice place. Did I see Caleb on an Embrel commercial? The little fellow on there sure looked like him.
If you did they must have kidnapped him
The cancer drug?
Omg, just don't do that Tallinn-Riga-Vilnius trip in one week, as some are trying. Those are ancient medieval cities, you can't just "check!" your travel box like that. You have to spend way more time there, explore bars, restaurants, learn some secrets, meet new friends, get drunk with them, and avoid "statue-statue-museum-church-next country" type of a visit.
3 minutes ago! 45th view!
well it isn't tax season so you have free time ;)
I’m
I live in Lithuania, Vilnius, some tips were good, but some things said no so accurate tho!
Mark, I watch your videos to see the beautiful places you visit. I don't watch your videos to see a picture of two men tonguing each other.
I agree. There are so many wonderful sites in Lithuania. But instead, Wolter's world decided to add the scene of Putin and trump tonguing each other for almost 5 seconds. I am not surprised with that since wolter's world is an illuminati member.
The trump Putin wall painting was in all the newspapers in Lithuania last year. It's actually them blowing smoke as they changed it from the breshnev kiss like in Berlin from years ago
I am sure it was in all of the newspapers in Lithuania. But the point is viewers are more concerned about visiting interesting locations of Lithuania rather than watching pictures or photos of dirty jokes associated with politics.
Thanks for the explanation.
you are welcome.
as a local heres 2 very important tips
tip 1: have money since youre from other country you have enough money to feel like a king unless youre poor
tip 2: vodka is like holy water
Gediminas tower is closed for now because they destroyed all the trees and it started to go down
Aldona Klivickiene
It has been already restored and reopened for tourists.
Yes, but I wrote it 1 month ago when it was closed
Let's not overlook the thousands of Jews buried underneath Vilnius.
Aš 100% ne lietuvis -^-
here's a fun fact. Vilna was the Jerusalem of Europe. They slaughtered 100,000 people at the Ponnary. The Nazis had lots of help by the local population. The later jewish cemetary is covered by the soviets with a sports stadium as in many locations. To mention the fun of these locations and history , but not the major locations where this happened is wrong. I also don't suggest picnicking at the Babi Year ravine and forgetting about it either.
My great great grandparents and nine of their adult kids and all of their families were slaughtered there. Two siblings made it to the United States in 1908.
Vilna was Polish, then Russian and now is Lithuania. The modern day citizens are enjoying the farms and businesses of my family and the architecture developed and paid for by the Jews.
When you are in Berlin, Poland, the baltic states etc , you can educate your kids on what the real history is all about. Figure out what percentage of Vilnas population was executed before you go dance on their graves.
The half of its population that was murdered are in the oil pits with a memorial by the cute castle.
Geh-DIH-min-as not Geh-dih-MIN-as please
To be honest, apart of TV tower Vilnius is boring :) You should visit Kaunas in summer, we have Lampėdžiai lake with a lot of activities around. Also Kauno Marios, good for fishing and hiking around. And a lot of nice routes for cycling.
LOL dont compare your village with Vilnius
Buddy, come on zero info about the city....
Wilno belongs to poles XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Im so funny amirite
Wilno. Beautiful Polish architecture. Polish city before.
Arcadius not rly
Breslau. Beautiful German city.
Its not Polish idiot. Its Italian, city built by Lithuanian ruler investments.
1MuchButteR1 Idiot you can say to your mother. Lummox. Change your books instead study russian propaganda.
1MuchButteR1 As my Polish culture is such a different from yours lithuanian, I will not offend you my neighbor with beautiful city with Polish monuments. Say hello to my Polish nationals living there ✌️✌️Thank you 👍👍
Pro tip: this is the least interesting and welcoming Baltic capital. Tallinn>Riga>>>Vilnius.
