    JUST a tip...for the jigsaw cut...make two hole diagonally opposite ends..top right and bottom left( incase your wondering lol) then run the jig from one hole making a L or a 7 , you would need to insetrt the jig twice in each hole, whichever you prefer, no need to make the Milkeway galaxy bhahahha...BTW...good job guys also subbed

      Good luck! We have since learned that if your walls are crooked you may need to add some brad nails to the front. For this fireplace nothing was crooked since we built the frame ourselves.

    About as amateur as it gets but still turned out wicked awsome! Just a heads up you could always use liquid nail or another strong adhesive for corner straps if you really want zero nail holes, wouldn't think so but still going strong in a house used 10 years ago!

    Hello, thanks for sharing this detailed diy. Planning to make it soon just a silly question the fireplace is in level with the framing wood or is it level with shiplap?

  • @8Jory
    @8Jory 3 года назад +4

    Since they'll be hidden anyway, broader headed nails or ,even screws, would give better hold to help avoid the bottoms pulling up. Brad nails don't have a lot of holding strength since they're made for trim. They obviously work perfectly fine in this project. It's just that if someone installs this with them it would be best to avoid hanging anything heavy directly on the shiplap.
    I'm not trying to take away from this project, it's fantastic and looks amazing, I'm just the extra careful type.
    Cheers!

    • @moderngreyfarmhouse
      @moderngreyfarmhouse  3 года назад

      Yep I agree. Our brad nailer only takes one size. Hindsight we could have put some nails on the end under the trim. So far so good. We have the TV hung and just mounted the mantle right before Christmas.

    For the future, if you do wood trim and don't want to see the wood grain, you can always prime it with a shellac, hides wood grain great.

      Thanks! This is a Dimplex Excite 74". It looks exactly the same as the Dimplex IgniteXL, the only difference is the warranty period is 1 year vs 5 years on the Ignite. I watched a ton of You Tube videos to decide which fireplace was best. The you tube channel I found to be most helpful was this one. ruclips.net/video/gis1WuUW5gE/видео.html Once I narrowed down which fireplace I wanted I was able to find the Excite cheaper than the IgniteXL and I was sold.

      We bought a Wagner Paint Ready Paint Sprayer. I chose that one because I didnt want to spend a whole lot of money but I didn't want to have to dilute the paint like some sprayers require. I picked it up at Home Depot www.homedepot.com/p/Wagner-HVLP-Paint-Ready-Sprayer-Station-0529017/204218851?mtc=Shopping-B-F_D24-G-D24-Multi-Multi-NA-Feed-SMART-NA-NA-All_Paint_Smart&cm_mmc=Shopping-B-F_D24-G-D24-Multi-Multi-NA-Feed-SMART-NA-NA-All_Paint_Smart-71700000048001153-58700004793621602-92700041080546416&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhITs9LO96wIVFRLnCh10_A-gEAYYASABEgK9B_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

    Looks beautiful, great job…but tbh I’d be so worried using a brad nailer to hold all that up, I’m sure some of those brads are bending as the time goes by, I would really recommend at least a couple 15gage nails in a couple areas on each board. but it looks great 👍🏼

    where did you put your cable box and how do you access it? Also, how are you going to swap out the electrical connection for the soundbar when you want to upgrade?

    • @moderngreyfarmhouse
      @moderngreyfarmhouse  3 года назад

      We use a ROKU streaming device. I don't see myself ever going back to something that is not streaming requiring a large box. The ROKU and soundbar are in that black area in the middle. You can make this area as tall or as wide that you'd like it to be for your needs I wanted ours as minimal as possible. The ethernet and power outlets are accessible because we moved them up the wall and they are directly in line with the area of black, you just stick your arm in there to unplug/plugin. The moving of the electrical wasn't included in the video.

    I think without trim on the side, you can lift literally lift the ship lap from the bottom since it is only nailed on the top groove.

    • @moderngreyfarmhouse
      @moderngreyfarmhouse  3 года назад +1

      Yes without the trim brad nails would be needed on each end. Still much less to fill than some methods ive seen used.

  • @andrewstacey315
    @andrewstacey315 3 года назад

    Is that the same trim for the sound abr as what it is for the corners?

    • @moderngreyfarmhouse
      @moderngreyfarmhouse  3 года назад

      It's not the same, if I were to build it over Id use a trim similar to the edge trim which is PVC which has no wood grain exposed like the one i used.

    • @moderngreyfarmhouse
      @moderngreyfarmhouse  3 года назад

      It can for sure be done in one day if you are committed. But we spaced this out over 2-3 days. One day was an hour or 2 for cutting the shiplap to size. Another for completing shiplap install and the 3rd for paint.

  • @stevewhelan3770

  • @jerrybillings4720
    @jerrybillings4720 Год назад

    How are you holding the bottom of the boards? The part that goes over the groove with the nails?

    • @moderngreyfarmhouse
      @moderngreyfarmhouse  Год назад

      They are interlocking which allows the bottom to not require any nail only the grooves need to be nailed in. For this particular build we also added baseboard so we could add nails to the very bottom piece. We also trimmed out the sides so we could add nails under those trim pieces also.

  • @WMBLLC
    @WMBLLC 3 года назад +2

    Does not seem like sufficient nailing. Shiplap requires strength on the groove side. Without nailing it will lift over time. Especially if any moisture, humidity, and rapid climate changes, fireplace, is introduced to that area. Also 18 gauge brad nails do not have the required strength as well. 15 gauge by 2" finish nails are the minimum. I would go back and add nails into all those studs. Fill, sand, prime, and paint.

  • @rafatorres1420rt
    @rafatorres1420rt 3 года назад

    It would be better if you start from the top so you have a whole piece on top and the rip piece hide with the baseboard at the bottom.
    It looks good though

    • @moderngreyfarmhouse
      @moderngreyfarmhouse  3 года назад

      If we had started from the top we couldn’t hide the nail holes and that was main our goal here. We probably could have switched up how it was cut on top or bottom to make it look better
