  • There’s no doubt that compressor diving is a dangerous activity. But for some divers in Taytay, Palawan, it’s the only way to put food on the table.

Makes you wonder what the local government is doing. I also came from a family of fishermen. The cousins and nephews of my grandfather in Samar also had to dive with old compressors and flimsy water hoses. They got old doing that and no help from the government whatsoever. We pay huge amount of taxes, we give these people power who live in mansions, but can't even supply decent diving gear to local fishermen? I mean how much would it cost to actually procure decent diving gear every couple of years for these fishermen, compared to their luxurious lifestyle? And even if it hurts the budget a bit, the returns would be 10-fold. Imagine our local fishermen competitive enough that we don't need to import supply from neighboring countries? Best case scenario we could even export some supply if the industry is nationalized. It pains me to still see fishermen engaged in this dangerous kind of livelihood. This shows that "sipag" and "tiyaga", most of the time, would only get you as far as it can, but we still need our government to really work for our kababayans to get out of the poverty hellhole. Rags to riches stories are more of exceptions than an actual surefire thing. Thank you for publishing this documentary, and I hope it would spark some action from the LGUs concerned. At the end of day, all we can do as ordinary citizens is to continously learn about the plight of the masses, our poor kababayans, and join them in voicing out their needs.

Ako lang ba? Yung naiyak? I feel for them. Poverty really makes it easy to choose living in danger over being safe but with nothing to eat. I really hope one day, an innovator, a scientist or anyone with skills and technology know-how be able to help develop a system, or a way for them to dive safely. Until then, let's all pray for their safety and bountiful harvest for their dive days

I have friends in Polillo Island that use those same fish traps and compressor dive. You have to understand that these are standard gasoline or diesel powered air compressors, not designed to give clean air for breathing. The air is unfiltered and it's going to taste like fuel and/or oil. They put Coke or Pepsi inside the air tank to make it taste better. After time those steel tanks also start to rust inside, the taste of rust and burned fuel is not appetizing and not good for your lungs. They use surgical tubing to breath from and it can kink while you're underwater, they are careful but stuff happens. Dangerous method to fish. I wanted to try it when they went spear fishing for Lapu Lapu, but they wouldn't let me... too dangerous they said. Much respect to these fishermen it's a hard way to make a living.
I think the guy with paralysis got the bends. If you're underwater long enough, even at 30-40 feet you can get the bends, I believe. Also, certain types of predisposing medical factors can cause anyone to get the bends easier. It's not so common in shallower water, but decompression sickness is possible. If the diver's are underwater long enough, maybe they should stop midway up for a 10-15 minutes to decompress.

I recently purchased a 30 foot fishing boat. I made a few repairs and now I will put a coat of varnish. My wife said we need a compressor for certain types of catch. She knows because my father in law is also a fisherman and so my wife has learned and knows a lot. This is why I searched RUclips to see how it's done. The advantage is that you can stay down longer. the disadvantage is the danger. if I purchase scuba gear I will need to search how to make a tank filling machine. I'm not aware of any scuba tank refilling anywhere close to my house. The disadvantage to scuba tanks if a limited air supply. I will have to do some searching and pondering to come up with the safest and most effective system. Good video documentary

Compressor fishing become the boon here in province of catanduanes that crippled numerous fishermen it was disheartening when we hear the news of people passing or just become vegetative specially if it's a family member or community member, but got no choice as overfishing was rampant this forces fishermen to fish farther. Currently it was banned here but many still do it secretly as bills ain't paying enough.

Damn, compressor diving is so dangerous, the only thing going for them is that they usually have a straight shot to the surface if the pump fails. And compared to the kids gold mining on compressors in the jungle they are at least able to put their kids into school so it seems like they're at least making a bit better money than the compressor gold miners. I've been homeless before for a few years and seeing stories like this still makes me realize I've lived a sheltered life.

Nasa remote place sila where other opportunities are beyond their reach
as kuya said, kaya pinupush nila kahit delikado yung trabaho, "para sa pamilya"
The traits they possess are very praiseworthy. Aside from "Sipag" at "tyaga" para sa pamilya, another commendable character of them is that regardless of how dangerous their job looks like, we still can hear how grateful they are in every provision from the sea, whether their harvest is plenty or not.
"Sa grasya/awa ng Diyos", as said, nakapagpatapos na yung isa ng ilan sa mga anak niya thru this job.
I'm assured that they are safe in God's hand.
He is the creator of the sea, air and land, He's in control of any of His creation, esp. His people. Lalu na ang rangal ng trabaho nila.
One of them mentioned the accident of being unconscious while doing the net-things underside, but he said, "Siguro mahal pa rin talaga ako ng Panginoon"
He definitely does! Y'all are loved and safe in His hands!
Praying for more divine intervention in your area!
*If people can't/won't help their fellowmen in their needs, God takes over.
