42 yrs ago my husband and I fell in love, this was our theme song! There was one slight change, we had to sing it as “Luke & Diane”. Lol! Only 9 short years later he died from a heart attack brought on by PTSD from the Vietnam War.
My Grandparents died in 2018, I was Crying Driving Home One Night Someone next to me Blasted this at the red lights, i rolled dpwn my window looked at them stopped crying and just gave them the Biggest smile as Happy As I Wish I Always Could be, from that moment i just learnt to accept Life is Life An Ohh Yeah Life Goes On!
Yes but do you think about what that means? I mean, it is so profound and most people realize it at different times under different circumstances. But yes there are still some good times, but the thrill of living being gone means we've come to the realization that this world, this life, is not what GOD intended. I pray for HIS return.
I feel you...I lost my day exactly two weeks before my 5th bday in a car wreck....I WAS BLESSED with a WONDERFUL stepdad... lost him when I was 19... massive heart attack at 34...😢 😢
Yes. Thank God the 70s and 80s are long gone becuase so many people thought that "partying" was the main goal in life back then and all it did was make people unable to cope when times get tough. People today are much more consciouss that partying all the time gets you nowhere and can hurt you in the long run.
Your math is way off. If you turned 40 in March/april/may of 2023 then you were born a year AFTER this song was released on John Mellencamp: American Fool in 1982. So you’re off by 7 years🤦🏽♂️
I was growing up in the era. We we’re truly the last of the Mohicans. The last of the end of an age. It was the donning of cell phones, the internet, and good video games thst I think ultimately started the change
Life goes on it’s own way..... even though the thrill of living sometimes seems faded away...... but hey! Hope remains!..John thanks for this fan favorite.
@@sheldonwalton5905 It's the lyrics. If you just read them--- they're horrible and some don't even make literary sense "Diane' debutante backseat of Jackie's car" Plus, it starts in the "heartland" and Jack's gonna be a football star-- (just ignore the horrible word choice for the Tastee Freez stanza) then he wants to run off to the city and then want the "Bible Belt"-- which is not synonymous with the Heartlanad to "come and save [his soul" The song doesn't really tell a story-- it's just a collection of words. The only thing redeeming is the catchy tune and refrain.
When I was playing I was Jack and Diane by Jake Owen, my father told me the songs kind of familiar and has same beat like John Mellencamp Jack and Diane. That brought me here. Amazing
Or the Bible is a work of fiction and we just die. Or the Koran or the Torah or the Mahabarata are true... just enjoy the music, it means more than invented religions

“Hold on to 16 as long as you can” is the second worst piece of advice I’ve ever heard. I did that for way too long and it was absolutely detrimental to my life. As one could imagine. A better piece of advice would be “you can’t be 20, on sugar mountain”

Kind of a depressing song in the end, longing for youth. I do that too, but I also feel like I could just have begun living 10 years later. Look forward to tomorrow and don't subscribe to this mind set. It rob me of many years where you think you are dead end or down and out.
Wow, I must have been in an extremely good and hopeful mood when I wrote that. I feel completely the opposite, to the point that it's almost funny that a person like me would ever write that comment.
Given the year it came out and the lyrics, it's a wonder the Religious Right and Nancy Reagan didn't get it successfully taken down. John Cougar Mellencamp from Seymour Inidiana was an highly outspoken Liberal Democrat.

Speaking about time, this one is for the survivors of America held hostage and Angola or whatever. Maybe Idi Amin? Small things post Carter's loss of 1980.
Not true. Its about life in general. The song had to tie it to sexuality to be "rock n roll" even though sex is held up as a general "high point" in existence. You learn that life isnt about sex and that it is not indeed the most exciting thing about life. Its just hormones.

How this song ever became popular ir bewildering-- the lyrics are ridiculous.
Break it down. What's...wrong with it? And, is it more the music than the words? The beat?

Suckin' on a chili dog outside the Tastee Freez
Diane's sittin' on Jackie's lap, he's got his hands between her knees
Jackie say, "Hey Diane, lets run off behind a shady tree
Dribble off those Bobby Brooks slacks and do what I please"
2:10
