    It's do-or-die for both Tsunoda and Ricciardo. If Ricciardo is instantly faster than Tsunoda after a hiatus, Tsunoda's career is over. But if Ricciardo can't comprehensively beat Tsunoda by the end of the season, it's hard to see Ricciardo having much of a career left in him either.

    • @ArthurZakaryan23
      @ArthurZakaryan23 Год назад +106

      I agree on both scenarios. Absolutely Ricciardo has to be beat Tsunoda regardless if he's not been on a F1 grid since last year. And if he beats Tsunoda handily then that could be it for him. Things though are a bit more complicated with Tsunoda from a backing point of view since he's backed by Honda but Honda's quasi RB engine program support will be ending in 2025 so I'm not sure how much that has played a factor to this point in why Tsunoda has continued to stay at AT even though he hasn't done a whole lot to help cement his place in F1.

    • @odin4227
      @odin4227 Год назад +127

      Tsunoda is sponsored by Honda, so it'll be seriously difficult for them to drop him if they wanted to. Not to mention, he's been massively complimented by the other drivers for how much he's improved this season.

      @mrgalaxy396 Год назад +88

      @@odin4227 I don't think he's at risk of being dropped unless Riccy boi does to him what Norris did to Riccy. But it will kill his chances at getting a shot at the main team, effectively stalling his career. He'd basically be in a position Gasly was for years, not good enough for the main team and warming the seat until another promising junior comes. He'd have to look outside of the RB camp to try and find a seat which is very unreliable and unpredictable if you're not a champion or a pay driver.

    To be honest, I think it is wise to leave Liam Lawson out of this opportunity. Rushing out of Super Formula doesn't make sense when; it's good practice to participate in a full season rather than 2 halves of a completely different championship, he could still win the super formula championship which is good for his cv, the jetlag and general pain of moving all of his kit and belongings from Japan to Fienza in less than 10 days, he didn't participate in the 3 days of testing at the start of the season which is essential for the feel for the car, because he's joining halfway through the season he is put instantly put under pressure to do what De Vries couldn't do with Daniel Riccardo breathing down his neck. Its the right time for Riccardo, he needs evaluating whilst Lawson needs to finish what he started.

    • @ChuyR.
      @ChuyR. Год назад +65

      The best marketing move for Redbull is to drop Perez, put Riccardo there, bring Lawson to AT for a couple of seasons and then retire Daniel to put him in the senior team. Daniel a couple of years in RB would be a huge marketing move.

    • @rars0n
      @rars0n Год назад +57

      I don't agree with most of the takes in this video. It makes perfect sense to replace Nyck with Daniel for the rest of the year. It makes almost no sense to bring in a rookie mid-season, especially for all of the reasons you stated. It probably makes the LEAST sense to leave Nyck in that seat for the rest of the season, as at least Daniel can be of help for developing the car.
      I'm sure they would have started the season with Daniel if they could have, but he didn't want that seat. Some time away has given Daniel some perspective and renewed passion, and an opportunity to unlearn some of those mistakes he learned at McLaren. I thought he was making a mistake choosing a reserve driver role, but this seems to have worked out to be a win-win situation for everyone, other than Nyck.
      This also gives Alpha Tauri a better chance to evaluate Yuki's performance given that the car is so bad. Daniel is much more of a known, veteran quantity than Nyck.

      Great comment. Liam Lawson is doing a fantastic job in SF and if he wins will have a strong argument for a seat next year. DR can both evaluate and develop the AT .. while both himself and Yuki will be evaluated by default.
      Puts more than subtle pressure on Perez .. but you have to think this was coming after a run of poor results.

McLaren had a car with braking that didn’t match his driving style and was just a blip in his career. Alpine and McLaren already hinted that Daniel was shockingly bad at giving technical feedback. So i don't think your #1 point is valid.
      I think it's more to do with Tsunoda and his wishes to go to Red Bull, Perez performing bad, their hesitation and needing a known driver to validate it. Nick was not a good comparison, the car is bad and they need something to confirm their choice. Given Nick has 0 points, they expect the car to not further improve and thus not scoring point for the remainder of the season, they changed something. In this case Nick out and a known driver in. That way they have more data when contracts are prepared (somewhere in september).

    Personally, I don't see Nyck De Vries being ousted just for his lack of performance on race weekends. It's no secret that the AT04 has been struggling on track and the recent upgrade package in Silverstone seems to be ineffective at the very least. Ricciardo being picked up for the rest of the season could be Alpha Tauris way of trying to get back on track with car development as much as it is an attempt to improve the teams points. Having an experienced driver that knows what it feels like to drive a winning car and the knowledge of how to give that feedback back to the engineers might be Alpha Tauris way of saving the rest of their season/preventing them from falling to far behind next season. This would also explain why Ricciardo was picked over another younger, rookie driver to take the spot.

It’s clear that after the tyre test in Silverstone (in which Daniel did times capable of the front row of the grid), they’ve put him in the Alphatauri to judge him against Tsunoda. I disagree with much of your assessments here. Nyck is 28 years old, with a lot more experience than any rookie driver, so they probably took a chance on him with the expectation that even if he started out slow, he would quickly improve and help the team by being a semi-veteran presence. He's had 10 races already and hasn't improved in any meaningful way, so it makes sense to cut their losses and switch to Daniel, who, after spending some time on the sidelines, has had his enthusiasm renewed and is now willing to accept the Alpha Tauri seat. Replacing Nyck with Daniel makes the rest of this lost season meaningful: not only can he help develop and improve the car, which will bode well for next year, but he also serves as a much better barometer for Yuki's performance in what is one of the worst cars in the field.
    Daniel is much more of a known quantity than Nyck and has much more experience. There is no downside to putting him in that seat. Meanwhile, as Checo continues to languish, depending on how Daniel performs they now have the option to replace Checo with either him or Yuki. They can make that decision much more confidently than if they just continued watching Nyck play pretend F1 driver.

Realistically De Vries isn't the problem, the AT is horrid and they won't score points either way, the problem is that Perez is not performing and there is no one to replace him, so that's why Daniel is at AT now and prepare him for RB in '24.

    With Alpha Tauri looking to develop more down the path of the Red Bulls next year it makes a lot of sense to have Ricciardo in the seat who can give feedback and aid development throughout the year. The marketing side of things is an absolute no brainer with Ricciardo being one of the most recognisable figures in F1. He’s jumping into a team which may have improvement levels similar to what Aston Martin had this year. And no big team wants to risk a rookie when they need immediate results.
      AT should be the best place for him to get him ready for RB, but instead they treat AT like RB now despite the car being absolute garbage.. it was one thing to replace Gasly and Albon for not performing in a top team, it's entirely different to boot De Vries for not performing in a team designed to be a learning environment.
      Makes no sense to expect De Vries to blow everyone away and lead the team when even a good weekend you struggle to get a single point out of that shitbox, him being replaced is clearly a move in regards to get Daniel ready to replace Perez next season if necessary, it's not so much down to De Vries his performance, that's just the excuse.

Good to have someone with Danny's experience and known speed waiting to line up. (I expect a switch at some point Perez for D Ricc. in / out of Red Bull vs. Alpha Tuari). 2 - The young driver program has been hugely successful. They have nurtured the next 'great' in Verstappen. They produced Ricciardo, Sainz and Gasly, all GP winners. Those who have passed through F1 have gone on to do other things (very well), namely, S Buemi and Vergne, both FE champions. One of the things that hasn't gotten a lot of discussion, and I think a key reason DR was willing to go to Alpha Tauri is that next year they plan to align closely with RB regarding any and all parts they are allowed to get from other teams. The feeling is that this will greatly improve the performance of the AT cars. I don't think DR is hoping for a return to RB next year, but 2025 when Checo's contract is up. If he can outperform Tsunoda this year, and then start being competitive against the midfield in 2024, if Checo continues to struggle, Daniel could get the call up for 2025. Especially that Williams was fitting Monza, so nobody knows how good it really was, because you couldnt compare him against Alex back then.
    And his FE seasons was never especially impressive, not even his championship winning one.
    So that "emotional" decision by Marko was always a slap into the face of all the RB Juniors, especially Lawson, who would have been better prepared for that season in my opinion.
    I dont think the driving talent is the problem in the RB junior programm atm. For me it is more about the lack of confidence in to the juniors from the people in charge at RB.
    Still I am feeling for Nyck, because he had no fair chance or time to learn and show his talent in F1.

    I don’t believe that DannyRic is ever going to be back in a RB car. This move is about them trying to figure out how good Tsunoda is and DR is a known quantity. I also think they may put Lawson in the car for a race or two to get a feel for him as well. DR needs to complete his rehab and it’s possible that with RB taking a more active role in AT next year that they may be able to hide him a decent car.

      I've been thinking this as well; I think Horner and/or Marko haven't gotten over him leaving after 2018. They're dangling the RB carrot to get him to do their bidding, but he won't get the seat (or I'd be highly surprised if he did). If he shows a return to form (or even better), putting him against Max is gonna be Senna vs Prost all over again...Ricciardo wants a WDC first and foremost, and the current RB is finally up to the task.

    I think you are also overlooking that Tsunoda could possibly leave Alpha Tauri next year. After all he is a Honda junior and three years has usually been the magic number for Red Bull to cut loose drivers that don't quite look good enough for Red Bull. With Riccardo there they will be able to evaluate exactly where he is as well as possibly mentor him to prep him for that seat.
    In my mind I wouldn't be surprised if he joined Honda at Aston Martin to replace Stroll. Having Riccardo in the seat now means they can not only bench the two drivers against each other, but potentially have a driver up and running ready to push and mentor Lawson if he does replace Tsunoda.

    This is much deeper than we all think, here is my honest opinion. In the first few races, Perez showed that he can handle Verstappen, and even be fast/er, what happened as soon as it became clear in the Red Bull team? Perez suddenly has all kinds of problems, and a few races later, this man can't pass Q3. RB knows that they will benefit much more with Verstappen than with Perez, that's why Perez is at the exit door, who doesn't see that, I don't know what to tell you... Ricciardo returns (very quickly) to RB in exchange for Perez. Perez wants to compete, but RB won't let him, it's crystal clear. Ricciardo has received all the instructions, you are going back to RB to do the work for us, read Verstappen. He is the only driver who has no problem accepting it because he has been up and down in his career, a very honest man, without a big ego, he accepts the task. That's the whole story behind this… Basically, it is obvious that Perez thinks he can compete with Verstappen for the first position. And RB doesn't want that, they don't need that "drama"... Their plan is, Max champ = next 10+ years.

      I think it was said before that Ricciardo's strength is down to trail braking techniques - something that he absolutely mastered in Red Bull making him capable of doing overtakes where he often out-braked other drivers.
      It's something that Renault initially didn't offered him but later on they started to fit his style, and McLarens simply just couldn't design a car around him to fit his trail braking style, making him looking a lot worse than he probably should be.
      I'd argue he's got a similar "problem" as Vettel in a sense that both drivers heavily relied on a set of car characteristics to maximize its performance - something that only Max and Alonso is capable of extracting 100% regardless of the car's flaws or otherwise.
      Let's hope AT04's brakes is a good one though. Yuki certainly did complain about it before.

    But he was just consistently slow and clumsy, with pretty much zero progress. They didn't hire him as a new fresh face that they invest several years into to mature his driving. They hired him under the premise of being a matured and complete racing veteran, who only needs to learn the controls of a different car. 10 races + pre-season testing later, and he was still slow and crash-happy.

I suspect that if Perez wasn’t still in second in the championship, Ricciardo may have may have been moved to the main team now in light of the rumoured very fast times he was setting in tyre testing. However, to drop Perez now means the team giving up getting the trifecta of first and second in the driver championship and the manufacturer championship. If Perez continues to fall behind too far and looks like missing second in the championship, I suspect they we’ll shift him out before the end of the year. They are ruthless in Red Bull.

    I think Ricciardo is meant to:
    1. be properly evaluated
    2. benchmark Tsunoda and
    3. put some pressure on Perez.
    It's a "to the end of the year to show what you got" situation, to clear up where everyone stands.
    All to bring some clarity for Marko regarding all drivers currently under Red Bull contracts, to see where the puzzle pieces fit right now (except for Max abviously and Albon who remains pretty unaffected). It's all about obtaining the most knowledge considering all hypotheticals.
    They want to know where Ricciardo really is and whether they could regain the force they once had with him, if they wanted to replace Perez. Tsunoda is in his third year and his perfomance looks good but only relatively. They want to know where his career could go because there ultimately are a lot of people in the junior pipeline, however, he doesn't quite look like they guy to replace Perez.
    They didn't put in their juniors now because they want both of them to go out and make happen what they want: get the title, earn the seat. Iwasa and Lawson have shown some good performances but they haven't gone and taken it. Everyone else simply hasn't shown enough or isn't far enough up the ladder yet, dropping out of the equation for now.
    It's a harsh treatment for De Vries but in the end, he knew, this was the deal he signed. He took it because of the included opportunities, knowing about the simultaneous risks that would balance them. He is 28 already, he was an F2 champion (albeit in a weak field), he was a FE champion - he has quite some experience outside of the big thing. Because of that he was adamant to not be treated as a rookie. He knew he would be evaluated in this way and he called for it and got the treatment according to the terms he and Red Bull had signed, simple as that.

    Gotta disagree with one thing here:
    The idea that De Vries didn't get a drive after his F2 title being down to a perceived lack of ability simply isn't true. He was sort of the original Piastri in the sense that he didn't have the money to make him irresistible, unlike Nicholas Latifi who got an F1 seat instead, but he did get signed to a driver program shortly there after. His opportunity was just one he had no choice but to wait for which is also similar to what Felipe Drugovich is facing right now; he might end up waiting just as long as De Vries did. Definitely a knee jerk reaction for Red Bull/AlphaTauri to sign Nyck, but the idea that there was writing on the wall about his ability is a bad take.
