My biggest gripe other than mentioned is not staying in first person when you carch the fish. Before the fish is even netted or pick up it swaps to third person with no animation
That is very immersion-breaking.
Yeah man! Needs to show us lip em
@@FoolisH409There’s literally no fishing game that does that.
I think I would have been wayy cooler if it was a dlc for hunter, call of the wild. Would have been cool to do both fishing and hunting in the same game
Definitely not the game is already buggy them doing this would definitely make it worst.
That's not how bussines works, they know what they are doing.Make you buy 2 games (one if u already own cotw) which are basically the same games, like you said this feels more like just a dlc to cotw
When i bought it, i thought it was an DLC. sad mad.
A DLC wouldn't have been very good because all the mechanics are different. Fishing would have been made very basic, not to mention a huge project to make fishing work on all their maps, and redesigning every map in order to have access to boats. The amount of work they'd have to do to make fishing a DLC, would be more work than just making a stand alone fishing game, so they did that. Plus, they'll make more money overall compared to selling a DLC. I think 'The Angler' is actually more feature intensive than 'The Hunter', so it might actually be more realistic to do the opposite. To add wildlife and basic hunting abilities in The Angler, but honestly I'd just be happy with them adding wildlife for the ambience, not necessarily hunting. Would be nice spotting a deer drinking on the shore, and some ducks feeding in the marshes to go with all the ambient sound of animals the game has, but no actual animals. That's weak.
Yes that would be cool
Passing on this game after watching more of it doesn't look any better than the ones I already play I'll just save the 30 and get a box of bullets for squirrel or goose here in a couple days
Actually jealous, I’m so busy this fall I am missing my dove/quail season! Ironically I have lots of ammo… just no time!
@@AgentXRifle damn sorry to hear that bud I'm trying to take advantage of the free time while I'm still young hope your able to get out at some point and have a good time
As someone who fished around 6 days a week - the main thing for me is the time it’s taking to land fish and also the strength of the line breaking is so so off - especially when people are breaking off on 5-8lbers on 20lb braid
Just like the bullet physics in thier game.
Yeah sadly every fishing game seems to have way over exaturated fight times
@@jb.fishing fishing planet is superior imo
@@madhatterentmt6146 nope russian fishing 4 lol. u can have a 40lb setup and a 60lb carp wil take like 30mins+
@@angelospieard220 special fishing operation 4?
I'm pretty disappointed in theAngler. I was really hoping for an industry leading fishing game or if not that at least something that looks and plays as good as Call of the Wild. I dislike everything from the fishing mechanics, fish models and animations after being landed, and seeing the fish poorly animated in the water just totally turns me off. The environment looks bland, which is a shame because I do think the water itself looks very good (and considering Call of the Wild took my breath away with many of its maps just has me scratching my head as to what went wrong here). I play Fishing Planet super casually since it's so greedy with its monetization and was looking forward to getting invested into this game. Maybe with future updates it might be something, but right now all my hype is gone.
Games awsome
future updates you mean the 200 dlc's they plan to release and charge $5 to $10 each one those updates you are looking forward to?
Literally disagree with everything you wrote
@@plaguem4rine the whole game is so unrealistic it’s ridiculous
If you play fishing planet no wonder you said this. Shut up dude no one cares about what you think.
Looked interesting at first, after watching videos though the actual fishing gameplay seems to lack any real challenge even compared to more casual fishing games.
Isnt that what call of the wild is all about in general though. Call of the wild hunting also lacks any real challenge at all.
@@MS-wz9jm not true at all
@@jayhob1114 it is completely true. All you have to do in Call of the Wild is sleep at a lodge to drink zone times and bam. Infinite farming. It’s just a fast-paced target range.
@@ZachRoDah if you want to play the game that way. You cant make the angler more challenging
@@sigstenbockgard8080 Only way a fish can get off your line, is if they break the line. They can never shake the hook. There isn't even a challenge to fighting fish. Only took me a few big catches to realize all fish movements are 100% predictable. When catching any fish that takes drag, pump when they run until they stop running, then drop rod and start reeling. You'll see the tension drop to near zero while you're reeling, which 100% signals the fish is about to run again, so pull back on rod and bingo, fishing tries to run. Repeat. Every fish behaves the exact same way. Once you figure this mechanic out, every fish becomes Glass Joe, and all challenge is lost.
Yes, they could make it plenty more challenging, but as it stands fishing in this game is 100% cookie cutter for all fish. This means, they made it as little of a challenge as physically possible.
Tournaments and online events would be huge,
Some form of photo album in the short term but long term a trophy lodge
Less large fish as I think diamonds are too common
Fixing the camera in the keep and the car
Adding far more rods and baits
Overall I truly believe patience will prevail and it will get better the devs really try to listen and evolve
Tournaments to see who can catch the biggest fish would be amazing! They could also do this with the hunter cotw, first to bag a great one (and/or the most amount of diamonds) wins (both tournaments would be on fresh starts with no dlc installed besides reserves, starting after they finish the tutorial, unless they can figure a way to skip it). They can do these tournaments by map as well, a tournament on each map in both games
There’s probably more that can be done like tournaments by animal, by weapon/ammo, etc
I also want to add some things I hope they change:
Fix the driving
Make the water clearer
Add a pole carrier and bell
They really needed to just add this to COTW: Hunter as an add-on dlc ... having it be a totally separate game is a huge mistake
Just as I said before the Angler won't make it alone and it seems like I was right
I agree the way they released it right now, how unfinished it is I think it would only be passable as an add on in the COTW lol
Im gonna have to hold off on this game. I think it could do a lot better than what's currently there. The devs certainly can do it, but rn its not hitting for me.
They should add fly fishing and maybe a map that is in an ocean with a tiny island and maybe a map in the plains with farms so you can go fish in farm ponds or big lakes and rivers and if it rains to much the roadside ditches flood and fish can get in there
I've said this elsewhere, but there are two communities here: theHunter community (for whom this game was essentially made) and players of other fishing games. theHunter players will probably enjoy this, at least at first. But for anyone who has played any other fishing game regularly, even "arcade" games like Ultimate Fishing Simulator or Dovetail's games (Euro Fishing; Fishing World Simulator; The Catch, etc.), is almost certainly going to be bored with the simple fishing mechanics in theAngler. While not quite as basic as the fishing in Red Dead Redemption 2, it is pretty close. EW needs to apay attention to the fishing community also if they want this to be even a moderate success; openworld and fishing with buddies are all pluses, but the core experience needs to be the fishing itself, and that is currently lacking.
Fishing Planet is not better. You adjust the break to the fish and then you just keep pressing the left mouse button till you got the fish. Takes zero skill.
For me, the best fishing game is russian fishing 4 at the moment.
@@Platoon1sc 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@Platoon1sc Sadly, I agree. I hate the P2W mechanics, but it's honestly by far the most realistic one out there.
@@Platoon1sc I was hoping someone told you wrong and made me discover a wholesome game. I really don't enjoy the way finding the hotspot is the mist important thing in the game
I don't think I will buy it, looks like alpha version of some game for me, too bland.
Lack a lot of stuff I expected from this game. Don't think people will give up on Fishing Planet for that, maybe only the ones who like arcades a lot.
@Thomas fishing planet is far more of a sim than this game what are you on lol
@@alexbarboni6619 thats not saying much though :)
Comparing this to the casual play style of theHunter is really helpful! I think I'd like to see many of the depth/realism improvements you mentioned before I consider picking it up, but perhaps there's another group of players that will enjoy the more casual nature and that'd be exciting for EW too!
Talking about having an aquarium for the fish I actually remember a game I had for the Wii when I was younger that was fairly realistic for the time and had multiple aquariums for different areas
Hey man love your videos. Just one tiny piece of criticism if you don't mind, your thumbnails have a red border around them but I've missed heaps of videos because the red makes it look like I've already watched the video. It could be just me but its better to bring it up just in case theres a bleed of viewers .
Keep up the good hunt!
Dude same
I think fishing should have always been added to call of the wild😢
would be good to see some fly fishing integrated, and sea fishing for that matter too.
"TheHunter" and "TheAngler" should be one game to begin with.
The biggest thing for me is that the game doesn’t have (as far as I know) new game slots, which is very disappointing because at sometime I may want to restart but I won’t want to loose all my trophies, especially when they eventually add trophy lodges and/or aquariums. Which is also my biggest con for The Hunter COTW as well for the same reasons.
Gotta be honest, while I was beyond excited for this game, I returned it a little over an hour after having bought it.
same
Maybe I had set my hopes too high, but this looks weak in so many areas. Such a shame!
It's a great idea of a game to get non-fishing-simulator players like me into the genre, but wow does it look like it needs a lot of love. Motion sickness from the camera following the rod is an immediate 'no' from me until that's fixed. The lack of lodges, f12 snapshots of a crash test dummy and no album to then review them in seems like a very big misstep. The water itself (and this may by YT compression) looks spongy and not as good as the shaded used in Hunter COTW. Catch a diamond of each and then, er, done? I think EW has a good idea in this game, but it needs a lot of work and some idea of when things are coming (lodges, maps, more species, remade player character models) before it will get my money. Thanks for the honest review.
My friend and I both decided that we’re not longer buying this until there are some major updates:/
This should have been a DLC for the hunter or a lot more developed....
I know better than to question your integrity, but there is just not enough content or realism to justify buying this as a standalone game/sim. There is simply too much to criticise, too much of an arcade feel and too little realism to make me even consider it.
Nobody is above their integrity being questioned. Those who are truly void of corruption should have no issue being questioned. This video was made in very poor taste without the consumers best interests in mind.
This is super helpful, thanks.
Question, me and my friends are looking to all get this game. When you go into multiplayer can you play with certain players or are you just put into a random server with other people playing multiplayer.
The game feels unfinished in some areas and that's what makes me wanna wait a while before I seriously considering picking it up
The game is literally "early access" beta. Probably why it feels like that. You're still better off picking it up while it's on sale now and save $10.00, plus get the free DLC expansion map for Norway before they charge full price for that too.
@@skydriver5709 yet they dare to ask full price..
@@Houtka86 To my knowledge, just about every non-independent game becomes available for "pre-purchase", where manyt people pay full price for a game even 6 months before it's even released and playable.
But here they let you play while they're developing, which to me is a lot better. And to be honest, The Angler is already a lot better than games like "Fishing Planet", where everything is blocked behind a paywall or level wall.
You're free to wait to pick it up, although it's guaranteed to be one of the top (if not the top) fishing game on the market. And right now it's on sale... but if you'd feel better waiting until it's full price and the DLC isn't free anymore, you're free to be the genius you apparently are.
@@skydriver5709 so what's your point considering my point exactly?
@@Houtka86 You never had a point. You took a game that's in early access, and by definition "not finished", and decided it was worth your time to say the game feels "unfinished".
smh...
Ice fishing or winter map where you could, would definitely have me stoked to get this game
That would be sick
This helped me alot, thank you! Going to buy this game for sure😎
i wish it would’ve been a a dlc where u can fish on the maps of hunter cotw
No... it's not, especially not at $30. In its current condition, maybe worth it as a $5-$10 expansion to theHunter.
I really wish this could have been incorporated into the hunter call of the wild, the game looks fun but I'm not hugely into fishing. However if it was in hunter then it would be nice to be able to take a break from hunting and go fish for a bit, or imagine you're fishing on the side of a lake and having deer or a bear or whatever come up next to you and start drinking. Stuff like that would be an awesome experience that you don't really get from any other games.
30 is way overpriced for so little content and compared to competitors that are free it' comes no where near
Agree with all your points, the first thing for me is realism of fish, when hooked
Im probably gonna pass on purchasing this game bcuz i would rather just hit the Allegheny river near my house and fish IRL 😂 And i already have Fishing sim world and i dont play it that much.. honestly i wish EW would have focused on The Hunter cotw game instead of making this game..
No judgement there! Having the chance to go for real can’t be beat!
If I buy this on steam or epic will I be able to play my saved account on xbox when the game comes to console as well?
what do you mean jumping in a boat w a friend cuz u cant even get on the same server when you click to join your friends from the apex connect menu
Not Spooking fish due to the wrong equipment is the #1 problem with this game. It makes the game just a little too easy. Just fixing that alone would make me enjoy this game so much more
After playing this game a while, I noticed a critical flaw. There's a single mechanic and behavior pattern for all fish. No matter what size or species. There's no randomness to fish behavior, and every part of their behavior is on a short loop.
When fighting a large fish that takes drag, you'll notice it. You pull rod back when the fish runs until they stop running. Then you lower rod and start reeling. You'll see the tension bar drop to near zero after a couple seconds of reeling, which signals the fish is about to run again, so you can pull back on rod in anticipation and catch it to wear them out as fast as possible. This repeats over and over every few seconds until you've landed the fish.
Same on every fish. Same pattern, every few seconds. There's no challenge to landing fish once you realize fish are 100% predictable.
A few more gripes:
1. Character arm placement when fighting fish. You can't see anything because your arms are in your immediate front line of view. Not lower where they should be so you can see over them. You'll find yourself trying to angle in order to peek through the small gap near the bottom of your monitor, to even see the fish you're fighting in the water. Pull back on the rod when fighting fish, and your character's hand will fill 80% of your display. It's like they put their hand directly on their face. So stupid.
2. Too many big fish, and not enough fish in general. I was mostly focusing on Rainbow Trout, and out of 10 fish caught, the average size is about 6lbs. 6LBS! There's also no schooling behavior. Just single, sporadic fish scattered around the water. Every fish is a participation trophy, basically. This would be like in 'Way of the Hunter', if the average deer was a 12 point, and all doe had at least 4. >.>
3. There are 4 reeling presentation patterns. Constant, Stop and Go, Jigging and Twitching.
Only Constant and Jigging attract fish. After more than 500 fish caught, zero fish were attracted to stop and go or twitching. All fish are caught with Constant and jigging only.
4. Unnatural fish habitats. I checked out the DLC and went up to the farthest, glacial melt pond I could find, which was above numerous high waterfalls that would prohibit fish migration up stream. Know what the pond had? Atlantic Salmon. 20 pounders.
154. It's an online game where you can fish with other people... but there's no chat. No voice chat. Not even text chat. So anyone you group up with, you just stare at each other and randomly do things. OH! But there are 2 dance emotes, and you can do jumping jacks.
Any developer should honestly feel ashamed for releasing a game like this.
Are there any special variations of each species (like fur types on the hunter cotw)
Fishing is a side game, look at Zelda, Red Dead Redemption 2, Skyrim, ect. This game should have been a DLC for CotW, by itself it’s very lacklustre
@Thomas ya not in front of a computer it isn’t lol
@@iceyreelz3228 then it isn't a game for you. That's alright.
I know I'm certainly not interested. But others might be.
I'm sure if they could have they would have made it dlc. But as buggy as cotw already is I'm sure it just wasn't an option. And honestly I'd bet EW didn't even want to make this, this feels community pushed
I don’t know, I may be biased because I’m a fisherman but either way I believe the money would be worth it. That’s like saying call the hunter basically should’ve been a DLC as well at least that’s how I see it.
@Thomas agreed
I'd really love to see what you think of Fishing Planet. That's been my number 1 fishing game for a few years.
The whole motion sickness part was spot on. I wanted to try the game out more, but all of the camera movement with the rod and the driving mechanics were just so hard to look at. And like you said it's just really sad because it would've been super easy to have an accessibility option to where the camera doesn't follow the rod, and even the option to go third person in vehicles (which they literally had in thehunter).
It really is just poor game design when devs can't figure out proper motion controls, it isn't hard at all and yet they've somehow messed it up by not adding even simple things.
good tips nice one flinter
If you play COTW with spotting turned off, as well as all of the helpers and tracking, it's a really hard game. I would put it in the simulation category. It's there as an option if you want the challenge. The fishing game doesn't have a hard mode.
I don't want to trash the work the devs have done cause I know they've worked hard to get this game done, but this game is just not gonna be an option until there's some kind of challenge and an aquarium for saving trophies.
it depends. i was pretty excited for it, but after watching more gameplay, i dont know. guess we will see!
I can’t play motion sickness games, thank you so much in pointing that out 👍🏼
Ultimate fishing simulator 2 just came out as well. It's a true simulator. It's still in early access but things will get fixed. Highly addictive game.
Fantastically honest review, thanks.
Wait is it only pc rn? Because I saw on Xbox website taking about it I’m confused
I think multiplayer does share fish
I was playing it with my friend and we both saw the same fish by the shore and when he hooked it i could see it struggling, when he caught it he snapped into the photo pose and could see me jumping behind him from that screen
Just want to say well done on the review. Presenting the information in an objective, honest way so that all potential buyers can make their decision is really the best way to do it. Appreciate the video!
Also so you can change the way the reel it isn’t always left handed cause it eycks
Helpful video, thanks. Think I'll wait for the xbox series x version. By then it'll be long enough to make my mind up. Looks fun though and I love COTW. Waiting for WOTH fixes for xbox.......
Is there any release date for console
Do we have a timetable for a release on console?
Open map, 12 players....no matter what game it is, I bet we can have a fun time.
I bet its going to be a riot!
Hell yeah brother! I will see you on the water
Thanks for the honest review!
They still need to add fly fishing, bottom rods and feeder rods
Would love to see a comparison against Ultimate Fishing Simulator 2. It seems to be the one that I have heard most people asking about beside theAngler as they both released at around the same time.
unfortunately that one is kinda shit too
@@BeetleBuns Well that sucks
@@Riyame My honest opinion... Out of the fishing games out there right now... I still think Fishing Planet is the best one... But that only classifies if you don't mind the insane grind to level up and unlock better areas to fish and better gear. If you don't like the grind it will get quite boring unless you want to spend a ton of money on DLCs.
there should be a gameplay slider, like arcade to realistic mode
I will say using the ps5 controller with the adaptive triggers makes fighting big fish really fun
All the money in the world and they can't make better water than games from 2004.
They can. It was never a priority.
I'll wait for this to go on sale.
Do u have a sonar on the boat ?
Can you fish in third person and drive the boat in third person?
Will it have story missions?
Got it for 15 today. That's a fair price for the state the game is in. I was able to run it on the Steam Deck although it ran pretty badly. If they fix that and manage to make the fishing more exciting, I'm happy.
i own it not as good as some others i have the fish dont look any thing close to the fish they spoused to be im still getting used to it when i get good ill do a vid but icaught 2 very small bass and cant seem to cast past 9 meeters yet
It depends, will you play the game enough to get your money’s worth.
This game needs a lot of damn work, but I do like exploration. I think it’ll be like NMS and have a good comeback
Is the hunter classic on Xbox one?
Hey, when do we get these clothes in Hunter Call of the Wild... 🤪
Honest review, I respect that!
I wish games like this had a "dynamic difficulty"... Have it start out easy to help you learn the game... Then get harder as you get better at the game. Sure let you catch a lot of fish early but make you work for it later. Feel the same way about theHunter.
I really think they should’ve delayed the launch a little bit and worked out some issues with it… I think ima get fishing planet instead.
flinter would love fishing planet if he want a realistic fishing game
Should’ve been an add on to the hunter COTW.
What consoles is it for?
Good information, thanks. Really torn on this game. Completely engrossed in way of the Hunter right now, even more so when they get this patch out. But was thinkiing of picking up the Angler but IDK I think I might just wait to see if they do any improvements. IDK, guess still a little torn.
let me help you, DON'T BUY IT.
yet...
How do you play multiplayer I can't add a friend
Uh yeah sorry this game is atrocious at this point. Maybe with some extensive work this could be something huge but it's pretty much a let down. People can spin it a lot of different ways on RUclips and give lip service but really?? Watch the game play. Glad to see you gave it pretty much straight Flinter
This wanted to be COTW DLC so bad but I'm guessing implementation proved problematic so they just pumped out a standalone. Feels that way anyway.
Just picked up ultimate fishing sim 2 for 9 quid, I'll probably get this in a few weeks after my holiday, much prefer hunting but I have never hunted IRL but I have fished. EDIT: maybe its a case of 'Oh shit, Way of the Hunter is amazing!! Look over here everyone!'.
Out now 24.99 euro on Steam.
When is it going to be released on ps5 ???
Good video Flinter, thank you for posting it. I still find this game more interesting to watch than woth. Guess time will tell which one gets better or if neither of them do.
I really thought they'd deliver something better than this. They made a big deal about fancy new spawn systems, temperature and so on but from the videos I've seen it really isn't worth it. Not even a proper animation for netting the fish, just a black screen.
Everyone saying they gonna hold off on buying the game until the devs improve it. But the devs won’t improve it if no one is buying their game. You have to support them as well as give them feedback
Worth it or not. I'm buying it.
Great video
I am disappointed with the graphics. After a The Hunter experience I was expecting something extraordinary. As a fisher myself, I just can not accept those robotic hands movements especially during spinning drags. People just don’t stand like this when they’re holding rods! During the pull one slightly moving hands, the rod…and damn! Jigging is not about moving the camera up and down to move the rod)) It’s about the rod being moving up and down while the FOV being stable.
Once again..graphics…sheet, the world is just empty and dead, and that water makes me recalling games from 2005 like Oblivion (though the water was better there). In games where the only activity is to observe nature - nature should be great, like in the Hunter! Come on, guys)
For those who don't already know about "Fishing Planet" it is actually the most realistic fishing game I think the market has to offer and get this, it's FREE. Definitely worth checking in to if you want to fish from your computer.
I made my decision as soon as it got announced. I’m buying as soon as I can!
Is this a PC only game?
What other fishing games do you like?
If it comes with different boats anf electronics i would consider it. I dont want to bank fish all day.
hmmm it's just a tough sell for me. I've been sitting on the fence about this one since it came out. As an avid angler I've just always felt like fishing is so hard to replicate in a game. I feel like vr would be fun for this. especially if you could have some kind of rod/reel controller haha.
If you’re a proper fisherman, you’ll love this game. It’s the closest thing you’ve got to real fishing. Once you get use to the menu’s and stuff, it’s bloody awesome.
