- Scales of Justice is a three-part Australian drama miniseries, made in 1983 by director Michael Jenkins. It was one of the most controversial Australian mini-series ever produced, examining corruption in all levels of law enforcement.

Thank you. I have been looking for these for so many years. I remember watching it when I was about 13 and it had such a powerful impact upon my perception of the country in which I live and also on the standards by which to judge a well-written and well-presented TV drama.
This and Blue Murder are the best crime docu dramas ever made, I reckon.

We study Shakespeare, Toni Morrison, “Cats Cradle,” “The Invisible Man”, etc for what would be our GSEs in California. So interesting. I’m trying to think back to an American show that I could compare, but it’s difficult, because we were in our, “the policeman is your friend” phase of television.

@@annamarielewis7078 I just found this. It very much reminds me of "Hill Street Blues," which premiered in 1981. The documentary-style camera work, the gritty look, and the realization that all cops are not Mr. Friendly.

I was shown this whole series once in the early 90's. It stayed with me, and even now I see it reflected in my world. And it was never mentioned again. I searched high and low for it, and today i found it again! I can only imagine there is very good reason it has been buried. It's far too real.

I was checking Caryards nearby, the night they filmed this at "Con & Nicks" Servo Arncliffe along with a moonlighting NSW Detective(who was one of many investigated by IA)Ironically filmed in & around the St.George Area infamous for its "shonky" Cops including several PolComs. We couldn't work out why "Federal"(White caps)Police were involved, not local General Duties Cops? Years later, I'd wear the same fictitious State Police uniforms in "Fat Pizza"(ABC Props Dept)My Casting Agent the Late Joy Hruby appears in an episode. Spot on,re: corruption!

Mate this is a great show, I was getting pinched a year after this show was made so all the cop cars and the way the cops acted brings back some memories 😂😂😂😂I was 14 when this was made, it is the most realistic and best Aussie cop show I've seen and the actors like bill hunter make it great.
Back in the days when the Australian Broadcasting Corporation could afford to make such outstanding drama . It didn't take long before Murdoch Inc' and his henchmen , the Liberal National Party , rode into town , slashing , burning and horse whipping a once world wide , highly regarded corporation , into a quivering , subjugated , emancipated outfit of political prisoners , to her new owners .

This is one of the grittiest , powerful and realistic Australian Police Drama ever made. Scales of Justice is well acted with a fantastic cast . It so much reminds me of the old school NSW Cops back in the 1970s -80s. Thank you for uploading this gem of a production on youtube. Any chance of uploading the two other episodes ?

I didnt know what to expect but this was absolutely freakin hilarious.
What's not been mentioned in these comments so far is that the incidences from which these three episodes of Scales of Justice were taken were sourced from the contents of a the Wood Report, a royal commission into corruption in the NSW police and each comprised of actual events sworn under oath to have occurred within the various levels levels of policing that are portrayed!
In other words, it's all based on fact, is true and really did happen. When this show aired nationally on ABC-TV the NSW police declared they were officially boycotting the ABC for the entire time period for which it ran, as they liked what it revealed about them so very much.
To their shame, from that royal commission into corruption there wasn't one criminal conviction made, nor any type of realistic reform reported, apart from there being a new NSW police commissioner installed. That police commissioner was imported from the UK.
It was commonly rumoured that this was because they couldn't find an officer with seniority in the NSW police force who wasn't at least in some way effected by allegations of corruption. (Under the new commissioner nothing changed anyway!)
A well known criminal interviewed for the Wood report stated that in the underworld it's commonly asserted that the difference between NSW and Victorian police officers is that with the Victorian police you could still tell that they were cops.
The former most decorated of all NSW police drug squad detectives, Roger Rogerson, was later incarcerated for his part in numerous international drug trafficking operations and to this day resides in a state prison on a life charge for the murder and (drug) robbery of a NSW methamphetamine dealer.

This is gritty stuff and very accurate. I do not know about Aussie police, but what I know about their British versions they are just as bad/good and a lot more corrupt and racist.

I loathe Australian drama. The term is synonymous with overacting or is it just bad acting. But this show is probably the best cop show that has ever been. It's all said below in previous pots. Similarly the theme music is the best ever and I mean this literally. Part of its brilliance is that it suits the series to a T. I should find out who wrote it and congratulate him. I wonder if Americans and Brits too I suppose can appreciate the show it being so Australian in character. Yanks please watch this and give your opinion IYW.

Australian police have always been armed. In this series the issue sidearm is a S&W .38 revolver, now replaced by a Glock 22
If this is a true portrayal of police conduct, very much like S, African brutality & corruption, I don't want to watch it. I lived thru it in S.A.
