Thank you from the southern US. We're not used to freezing temps here and our spigots froze - one affecting the cold water in our bathroom. Used your method and it worked liked a charm.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! We had a hard freeze last night in Washington DC and I completely forgot to leave the taps dripping, one of them froze and I was in a panic. This worked perfectly! I was able to unscrew the hose and though the tap was too close to the outside wall to rest on the bag on its own, I opened up the top of the bag and immersed the tap for about another minute, it loosened up the ice beautifully. Thank you again!!!!
Wow, this actually worked quite well. I had two faucets that were frozen and had tried a few things with no success, but this got them both flowing after about 10 minutes. Thank you!
It's been a tad cold for two week. I had to turn heating on. Thanks for the demo. Boiler overflow pipes have been freezing. Had to pour boiling water on to defrost it. 👍👍
I remember, when I was very young, my dad used to prop the attic trap door slightly open and leave taps slowly dripping to prevent freezing pipes. How times have changed. 😆
Hello, Ultimate Handyman. You're right, where I am in Canada, - 9 C is nothing remarkable. For our outside faucets, we generally have a shutoff valve inside the house, with a drain. One of winter preparations is to shut off that valve, and remove the small cap and drain the water out between it and the faucet. This valve is lower than the faucet to allow drainage. I don't know if this is a common practice in Britain, but it is here.. Or else!
I’m in 🇬🇧 and this is exactly what I did when I installed both my outdoor tap for my hosepipe and the outside “doggy shower” for washing our Labrador. All have inside isolators and all have drain plugs. I drained them all 2 weeks ago as we knew this cold weather was coming in the UK How did I know to do all this, I watched Richard on This Old House for decades 😊
That kind of cold seems so bizarre! I'm watching this from Atlanta and it's supposed to get down to the 12F which is very rare. They are warning us about pipes freezing so now I know what to do if they do.
It's not super common here - we had a new outdoor tap/faucet installed this year (UK) and had to insist our plumber include an indoor shut-off. In most of the UK we only get freezing weather a few weeks of the year, and it's even rarer to get the sort of weather where pipes are in much danger of splitting.
@@aussie2uGA I don't know what your construction is like if 12f is a concern. You can leave a tap dripping in the house overnight tiny flow will help keep it from freezing up. If you can shut the valves to outside hose bibs disconnect or drain hoses and leave the tap open. NOW is the time to locate the shutoff to your house and make sure it operates.
We bought a 1912 old two story house on the Canadian prairies and during the first week the water pipes to the kitchen froze. They were running up the exterior wall from the basement. I insulated the wall as much as possible and never had a problem since. High insulation is the key to frozen water pipes and winter comfort.
Hi, and season's greetings to you and your's, thanks for some great tips, it's been a bit brass monkeys lately, and not many people remember to isolate outside taps, at their own peril especially if their going away for Xmas. Many thanks for all your efforts to edificate, lol, us mere mortals in the diy world, keep up the good work. I would like to whish you and your's all the best for Xmas ,and a happy new year mate, kind regards Stuart Uk.

My kitchen flooded last winter because I failed to isolate the outside tap. Immediately downstream of the isolation valve under the kitchen sink was a non return valve. So that’s fitted recently during a kitchen upgrade to comply with water regs. So when the outside tap freezes, the water becomes hydraulically locked between the ice and the non return valve. The failure point in my instance was the compression fitting for the non return valve popping off rather than a burst pipe. I think that if water doesn’t hydraulically lock, then the freezing action will simply displace water back up the pipe, without causing a burst pipe. I’ve got drain cocks for both mains water and central heating embedded in the brickwork of my house. They’ll been exposed to deep cold in the 30 years life of the house, but no burst pipes, probably because no water gets “locked”.
It’s a “strong” solution, but not totally solid. Freezing cold will eventually make its way into a lagged water pipe, but it happens more slowly. This is a risk especially with stagnant water. If there’s a regular flow of water then lagged pipes definitely help. But if say you’re on holiday, then the cold will eventually freeze that pipe. Best solution in this case: 1. Lag the pipe 2. Isolate water supply 3. Drain any loft tanks 4. Vent the pipework (leave at least one tap/ shower open). Then if there is any freezing, then the freezing action will displace the water up the pipe rather than bursting the pipe. If you do get a burst then the damage is limited. Bear in mind that it takes as much energy to bring water from ice to liquid (both at freezing point) as it takes to bring liquid water from freezing point to 70 degrees C. If your pipes are lagged, it will take a while to freeze.
MY MAN!!!!!! I thought this was some BS hack. My pipes have been frozen for 2 days do to this polar vortex the southern part of the US is experiencing. I tried the heater and other stuff yesterday but today I tried the water in the Ziploc bag. It didn't seem to be working but about 30 seconds after I took it off water came gushing out of the pipe! My plumber showed up 15 minutes later pissed because he thought he was going to charge me some outrageous fee. Sir, if we were closer I'd buy you a beer!
Excellent vid 👍👍👍worked great Can I ask what type of spanner I need to undo nut on faucet?? it looks like it has hexagon shape and my normal spanner isn't working
Outside tap: Fit an isolation valve under the kitchen sink in our case and don't forget to turn it off, when it's likely to freeze and then open the outside tap. Crikey! S'not been that cowd over our side of the pennines.
I doubt it, but the empty pipe is still connected to a pipe that contains water. In the right conditions, there is a chance that the pipe will conduct and eventually freeze the water in the pipe. Last week a mate of mine had a burst pipe in his garage that was lagged!
I’m afraid I’m not a big spender when it comes to clothes 😂 My ICI jacket is 30 years old, the bob hat was free and my combat pants are £20 from Matalan 😂 I’m sure I got contacted by a workwear retailer a few years back, but I’d rather not go down that route. I did look into Merch too, but I tried several of the “off the shelf” merch providers on RUclips and the quality of the merch was not up to standard and expensive!

Water expands when it freezes, once it starts to thaw it goes back to its normal size. Warming a pipe will do absolutely no damage at all. However, if the frozen pipe has been damaged, it will become obvious when it thaws out 👍
I’m a bit delicate this morning, after a few too many Benedictine coffee’s last night.
I hope everyone has a great Sunday 👍

Thanks for the video. Is insulating the pipe with foam before these weather conditions a solid solution to prevent frozen pipes?
Yes, that will help in most cases, but yesterday a mate of mine had a burst pipe and that was already lagged with foam insulation!

I normally just use an adjustable spanner (sometimes called a monkey wrench). The nuts are often brass though, so they are easy to round off!

Can a outdoor hose tap actually freeze. If it's been isolated. And drained of water??

Been using this method for over an hour with near-boiling water. Still frozen.
Blimey, what is the outside temperature?
In that case it seems possible that the pipe feeding the tap is also frozen.

20 mins and stated heating up extra hot but not boiling in microwave.

Normal tap water temperature in plastic bag would work quicker.
Using the bag trick i only a trickle out
It should thaw out after a while 👍

this is ridiculous, the pressure from the ice with this method would bust a pipe even worse... better to let it thaw on its own slowly
