  • Toyota GR Yaris vs Toyota GR Yaris Rallye/Circuit Pack. The much overdue Rallye has finally arrived down under! You all asked for it, so we simply HAD to get these two together for the definitive test. Scott Newman and the team headed down to the Bryant Park hillclimb track to pit these twins against one another over the twisty 1.4km course. Do the Rallye's Torsen LSD's and better tyres change the game? Or are red cars faster?

    Hi y'all, Scott here (the presenter). Thanks for the many comments, it's certainly generated some discussion. Many asking why we didn't swap the tyres over between the cars. The first reason is because we were limited on time, the second more important one is I didn't even think of it, because it became clear from the first corner that focusing on the tyres is burying the lede. The Rallye handles completely differently because of its diffs. Yes the time difference would have been much less if we'd swapped tyres (let's say the Rallye goes a second slower and the GR a second quicker for a 1.4sec difference) but the Rallye is just so much more adjustable and enjoyable. It would still be fun but with less grip (maybe that would make it MORE fun!), whereas the GR would still be inherently compromised, albeit faster. But also, feedback noted and if we do a video like this again we'll be sure to swap tyres!

    • @Dave-gl6jb
      @Dave-gl6jb 3 года назад

      Thanks mate. Love to see a second video showing the pros and cons of both cars. Like a long drive on some Aussie roads and end with some track fun. PS In the end us base GR owners know the Rallye is a better track weapon but for the road a base with better tyres is enough for most of us with our driving skills.😎

    • @tarche2
      @tarche2 3 года назад +1

      Why would you swap the tyres? The tyres are what came with the model. Swapping the tyres is like swapping the suspension, wheels and diffs then testing the same car against itself. The rally/circuit pack has all those different parts so needs to be compared with how it comes out for s true test if the extra money is warranted.

    Can we just take a minute to appreciate how good you've got it. The Fiesta ST in the UK is $10,000(Oz) more in the UK. The new price for the basic GR is $7,000 more. But moreover, the price of a GR is about 1:1 the average salary of a job in the UK. In Oz the Gr is about 50% of the average Oz salary (depending on salary data source). So it's dirt fucking cheap.

    • @MultiTrikz
      @MultiTrikz 2 года назад

      Unfortunately the Oz average salary is blown out of proportion due to the increase in Chinse making 100k+ a year, realistically its closer to 60k - 70k a year. The majority of people will be paying the Yaris off over 5 years or more.

    So tyres would be the quickest thing to modify. It would be interesting to see the base spec also on Michelin pilot sport 4 s tyres.
    Other simple enough mods:
    - tune
    -exhaust for sound and power.
    -light alloy wheels while you are busy changing tyres
    -Remove the rear seats and everything out of the boot for weight reduction.
    -Last mod to the base spec is aftermarket LSDs :)

    Great to see the comparison on the same day/track. The suspension and tyre seem to control the Rallye front end far better. Tyres are the most important factor, but they won't change the attitude of the car regardless of how close it gets to a Rallye.
    The 'base' model at $55k makes the Rallye a no brainer; but the $40k launch price vs $56k comparison is the real calculation.
    Basically a question of if you want a mild Yaris, a road/track Yaris or you want a track Yaris. The latter of the three is probably best achieved by getting the cheapest car and suits people who like to modify things. You'll also have change for a year of track days. Standard GRY boys are a bit salty, but shouldn't be. They also shouldn't be kidding themselves that tyres will solve all things.

    • @Dave-gl6jb
      @Dave-gl6jb 3 года назад +3

      Yeah Well said mate. PS That's why it's called a track pack overseas or circuit pack. Base GR great road car just get rid of the Tyres. You like to drive fast more often or track your GR then Rallye. Simple.
      PS still want to see a fair race on same tryes but will happen sooner or later.

    • @rob105motorsport
      @rob105motorsport 3 года назад +3

      @@Dave-gl6jb Cheers. I think the hardest part about a comparison is that it'll be heavily dependent on the track. The Rallye is about 1.5-2s faster with a pro at the wheel at my closest circuit (109.9 vs 111.4). But, it's far more open than the hillclimb in this video.
      One thing that's interesting is everybody being fixated on times. I wonder how many people will really be held back by the limits of the standard GRY even with the Funlop tyres and (safe) understeer. The base GRY (or Fiesta ST if you've seen the Piston Heads comparison) may be a far better proposition for most with a greater residual budget to get out and use it. Then you can upgrade components/car once you've mastered it. Nobody is racing, and I'd argue that hot hatches are a lot about fun/reward. I still like the idea of a GRY with LSDs/suspension, but personally the $60k was too much relative to itself and other options, so I've got to wait out the hype.

He (a very experienced spanisch car reviewer) said that tires make half a second difference but he would still recommend the standard Yaris for daily use and only to get the circuit pack if you intend to track it. I have to say, in europe, the track pack is "only" 5k more than the base so for me it was a no brainer, especially with discounts, the track pack is basically for free. But 16k is a lot haha i would definitly get the standard but on the track the circuit pack does make the difference according to the review added above. Yeah look, this is pretty lazy journalism. Stating that "the extra mods on the Rallye are absolutely worth the price" when you haven't run the comparison between the two cars using the same PS4S tyres on both is fundamentally flawed.
    Putting a set of PS4S on the GRY would cost around $1,000. This will likely make up 3/4 of the time difference you experienced between both cars as delivered from factory. This means the differentials, wheels, and suspension are responsible for significantly less of the difference, while making up significantly more of the price.
    Do the same test with both cars running the same PS4S tyres with everything else being stock, then compared the times and see if the price difference between the GRY And the GR Rallye (minus the cost of tyres) is "absolutely worth the price".
    My guess? It isn't.

    Here in the US I was recently offered a GR Corolla Core with no LSD at MSRP. I almost went for it, but after finding this video during my research of how transformative the LSD is, I told them I'd pass on it and either wait for a Circuit Edition or a Core with an LSD. Sure I won't be one of the cool kids with a GR Corolla for a few more months (maybe longer), but I want to experience this car as the best it can be rather than something that is clearly compromised.

    The Torsen LSDs make a BIG difference in corners during motorsport use. The benefits of LSD are even more obvious in corners for FWD or RWD. Salty? It's some owners of the Rallye that shit me. They think they are superior to the base GR owners. When I bought mine at $40k there was no other option or talk of a circuit pack coming to Australia. That aside after 5 months of ownership I am stoked, and why would I be salty? I got a bargain and I spent over $15k less. I am sure if I spent another $15k on mods I'd have a car far quicker on the track than the standard Rallye. Why it's even made out as a big deal idk. No one is bagging WRX owners for not owning an STI. Let's face it, how many people are going to track the car? Most don't or won't, so why does it matter. And if you are seriously track or targa focused, my bet would be a base, and with the money saved you get to fit your own performance bits to suit the set up you require. I would go as far to say that the GR "base" with, PS4s, mca coilover kit and Rear factory torsion diff ($47k all up) you'd knock those 3.4seconds off no problem.
