Just a clear up… that first SG for 15,500, used to be mine. I got it from the original owner. That heel repair was not done by Glazier and doesn’t have carbon fiber in it. It was actually done at Gibson in the early 90s. I included the receipt for all the work that the owner had done when I sold it to JW. So should still be in the case documenting what Gibson did. It wasn’t a pretty repair but they made it solid. THAT guitar plays and sounds great with a typical 59 neck. Most people think those SGs have mega thin necks, where in truth only really the first and second year did.

Thanks for the clarification! Completely unexpected! Really appreciate you taking the time to talk about the history of it. Loved checking it out and all the other stuff there.

@@aflashfloodofgear actually the original owner got it while in the Army in Vietnam. He was part of the Army’s band at the time, and if I am remembering correctly, the Army supplied the guitar, and it was his to keep. So he played it throughout Vietnam, then back in the states after the war where he would play it regularly. In the early 90s suffered a heel crack, so he sent it to Gibson for repair of the heel, and have the headstock face refinished. At that point the pickups got swapped out for chrome covered PAtent #s instead of the PAF patents it had in it. Also the tuners were swapped for Gibson deluxe tuners. We guessed that Gibson did these (upgrades) as a favor as he said he never changed anything himself. So probably someone knew the pickups were worth some extra money… But that’s guess work. Anyway, I put correct tuners on it, and correct rear pickup ring (the other was a shorty). Otherwise all original, and that one just sounds fantastic even with those later chrome covered patent #s. I only sold it to get a more mint 61. But every time I go into Jimmy Wallace I need to play it… it’s a great guitar. People tend to overlook it because it’s NOT a 61, has a heel repair, and miss that it has what most people consider to be a more desirable neck profile. They never plug it in… but I can tell you that one is special…

I’ve had the pleasure of purchasing a 1956 Junior and a 1954 ‘72 Les Paul Custom (with the staple pickup). These are just 2 examples of the type of cool, all original guitars they have in the shop ! Spoke with Jimmy by phone and it’s the personal touch in making these types of purchases you have to have! The staff is outstanding- and getting the original cases was the quintessential “icing in the cake”! Thanks for all you guys do!

Burst was my #1 I look at the listing for that guitar on Jimmy's site atleast once a week,
That p bass was so square looking! Like litterally all hard edges! I never noticed that on the early ones!

Great stuff. I’ve lived and Dallas since I got out of college, in 1985, and I hate to admit 8t, but I’ve never heard of Jimmy’s guitar shop. So cool that they will let you not only touch, but actually play 59 Les Paul. My favorite from the videos, though, is that early Fender Strat. They are so cool and, like you said, it’s amazing how Leo just nailed the perfect electric guitar design, way back in the 1950s. So cool; thanks for sharing.

The Les Paul Custom was my favorite. I bought my Frampton Les Paul in 2001. I instantly bonded with it. The ridiculously thin neck, the resonance, and the sustain. I think that the Richlite fretboard adds to the playability of that super thin neck.

Very cool shop, i remember buying a les paul jr from my dads guitar player for 100 dollars when i was 16 in 77 and i was at a gig and the gutar fell and the headstock broke off.so i traded it for a ampeg svt mint
then my friend had it repaired and he told me it was a 1959 but i needed a big amp to go on tour in 81-83..cause i play bass and my marshall full stack stayed at home lt was a 1977 a&b cabs and a 50 watt plexi head....take care e ernie ...

While i will never own a 59 i am very grateful to own a 2018 True historic R9 VOS that looks a lot like that
59 you got to play. That 59 you played is my favorite look where it is lighter than a "Iced tea burst" but not real light Lemon
like Greenie or the appetite burst. It is a honey amber color. Gibson calls the finish on mine "Honey lemon fade"

That store not far from where I live. I’ve wandered around it a few times but I’ve never seen anything I feel is a worth the lofty asking price. Yes, it’s retail, i get it. But it feels like everything is 30-50% higher even though it’s a buyers market for anything that isn’t a ‘59 burst.

Really didn't know what I was lookin at in 1986 .. just about had a 59 cherry sunburst for 6 or 8 hundred..long story short the guy said at the last min man I can't do it after he talks me into it to begin with... If it didn't look so cherry I would not have even been interested. Funny huh.
