  • In this video, we troubleshoot this Magic Chef MCWC50DST wine fridge that intermittently stops cooling and displays the error code "EEF". Thankfully, it was a pretty easy and inexpensive fix.

I had a relay go bad on my 24 year old side by side Kenmore fridge/freezer and the appliance tech charged me $96 including a $5 part! So this if I can get the right one on Amazon as your link is saying no longer available. Will be nice to get the 15 plus year old beverage fridge going again. Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks for the video. My fridge model number was similar. My part number was QP2-4.7 start relay refrigerator PTC. I orderef it on Amazon and changed it. Took just 10min to change. Thanks for the video again.

Hi, Joe Good Evening ! Yesterday I just was so happy to watch your video about repair on MCWC50DST wine fridge. You explained somethings to do troubleshooting the cooler which won't cool at all. Now I have same issue on mine and I hope you have smart brain to help me out if you can. I thank you in advance. Here are my issues:
    1) My Unit made by Vissani not Magic Chef, but model is identical to yours : MCWC50DST; the problem is staying the room temperature around 70-71 degree all the time no matter what I have done to fix it by a) replaced the starter and overload protector, the results are all the same"no cooling" and unsucessful and failures !!! b) When I plugged in the power, the compressor and condenser fan are turning on and working as usual. c) Opened the microcomputer controller board and took a look seems there are no damages the circuit board etc.
    2) My temperature panel setting looks like working such set and red and white , light buttons are all working but I never showed to the "ERRR" message on display of my unit.
    Here are my questions :
    1) How to do the tests on terminals or pins on PCB board to see it communicate to the compressor and condenser fan ?
    2) Is there temperature sensor or probe sit in the inside of back panel?
    3) Where is the evaporation coil and fan inside the back panel to generate the cool Air?
I am sorry to ask you too many questions, please read them patiently and I am looking forward to hearing from you if you have all the knowledges about the wine fridge.
    Have a nice evening!
I am in California and Sorry to bother too late evening!
    Regards,
    Ping(Paul) Lin

I have this one, it came with the house. It didn't work when we got the place and I finally got around to checking it out.
I had no power to the compressor/fan. I pulled out the control board and the main load relay had a bad solder joint and it overheated the little solder there and opened up the power flow.
I resoldered everything and put it in and it worked! I let it run, set at 61, it cooled from 66 to 60 or 61 in maybe 2 or 3 hours. I set it to go to 57 to see if it could, went out for an hour, when I came back I had EEF.
I cycled power, everything running again, back in cooling mode.
While it was in its 2-3 hours run I checked internals, compressor warm but by no means hot. Fan running, coils reasonably clear. After EEF, restarting, and running 10 minutes, line into compressor very slightly cooler than ambient, line to coil very slightly warmer than ambient.
Any idea? Is it a refrigerant issue, taking to long to get a certain T delta?
    Thanks.

Hi Joe. I hope you're still checking the comments. Excellent video by the way. I noticed that the full number on your PTC starter is P6R8MD ORT1805. The one in my wine cooler (same model Magic Chef) is P6R8MD ORO507. I found one on Amazon that matched my number and just ordered it. There are a lot P6R8MD parts with different trailing numbers. Do you (or anyone else reading this) know what the difference is? Thanks.

Thanks. Great vide. I have the same unit. Original problem was that the fridge has power but was not cooling or running compressor. I replaced my starter relay and the overload. After plugging it in the compressor came right on but then stopped after 10 seconds. Then a minute later it runs for 10 seconds and stops again. It cooled only 1 degree since I plugged it in about an hour ago. So I took the back off again and when the compressor comes on, the fan runs. But alas, 10 seconds run time only. One thing I noticed in your video is your starter relay replacement number is slightly different than mine.Yours is ORT1805. My original top number is the same as yours but the bottom number was OR0705. I couldn't find that part as I replaced it with OR0703 which ironically is the same number as your original part. So I'm thinking these starter relays are interchangable and my new relay should work with my fridge. Lastly, the time between each compressor start is longer and longer since than when I first plugged it in. Without timing it the unit sits idle like it was when it first died. Lastly, when the compressor does come on for its very short time, after it goes off I can hear gurgling sounds in the back of the unit like water is running or dripping inside somewhere. I don't know if that's normal or not. That lasts for about 30 seconds or so and then stops. What would you recommend?

That almost seems like the overload is kicking in... Maybe the overload is wrong or the compressor is over-amping for some reason. I would stick a current clamp on the power wire to the run terminal to see what the running amps are and compare that to the nameplate on the compressor.
      Some possible causes for over-amping:
      1. Are you sure the condenser fan is turning? It should be moving a decent amount of air... when I picked up this wine fridge, it was turning very slowly. I took the motor completely apart and oiled the sleeve bearings which fixed that problem.
      2. Plugged metering device (on most fridges, this is a capillary tube), restricting refrigerant flow and causing high head pressure
      3. Plugged filter dryer.
Both #2 and #3 require tearing into the sealed system, which you shouldn't try unless you know what you're doing.
I suppose there could also be something wrong with the control board, or the relay on it that runs the compressor.

I bought both the relay that you replaced and the overload below it, but now I need to find a video that gets in close so I can see how to put the new parts on the compressor 3 pins. You did only the relay and put it in so fast I couldn't see what you put it on and you didn't take the overload part out so I can't tell how it's seated before I put the relay on the other two connections.

Hi Joe, I changed out the PTC Starter and the HMBC58ST runs pretty good put it wont turn off. The Refrigerator is set at 4 deg C which it cools to but continues to run. Eventually, it starts warming up to 8 deg C. Is it possible there is a thermistor that is defective? thanks, Dave

    Hi Joe,
Just picked up a used Magic Chef wine cooler and I get the EEF after running a few to 24 hours.
The wine cooler gets cold to 46F - 52F but then goes into EEF mode then resets back to temp display and cools.
Does this issue sound familiar to you.

As a follow-up I ended up having the same problem again with that EEF error. I could find nothing wrong with the refrigeration system so I built a new computer to run the fridge and it has been running fine since I did record a video of how I did it but unless you're pretty handy with electronics it may be more cost-effective and easier to just buy a new factory computer. Not guaranteeing that's what your issue is

Hi, I have a magic chef wine fridge like this one and I have the same issues except for the compressor clicks off every 1-2 minutes for about 2 seconds and then it clicks back could this be caused by that ptc relay?

Check to see if you are getting 120 VAC at the compressor terminals. If not, test the compressor overload and replace is faulty. Sometimes they fail when the PTC relays fail
