  • After several negative interactions with Cuban men, coupled with preexisting stereotypes, I'm left wondering if Cuban men in Miami generally have a problem with Blacks?

Autumn A yess! Cuz black and African American is not the same thing. All African Americans are black, but not all black people are African Americans. Cuban is a nationality just like AMERICAN is. You got white Cubans, black Cubans, and mixed Cubans. Shit ya even got Asian cubans and Cubans of middle eastern decent. And one thing about black Cubans( unlike other black Hispanics) is that they KNOW they are black. Cuban black people tend to not be in denial of their blackness.

I may sound stupid but im not used to living somewhere where you actually see so many successful black entrepreneurs. My husband is from ny and didn't understand becuz I believe he says it's really the Jewish ppl that are racist and I tell him down here just pretend the Jewish ppl are Cubans and ironically there are alot of Cubans that are jewish. They live in all the expensive neighborhoods like coconut grove, miami beach, coral gables, etc. Its crazy I can go on for days. But on another note miami has always had alot of segregation, and im a bit biased because im like how can black Americans complain when they have treated us haitian Americans like shit. But growing up visiting my grandfather and his sister, I always remembered how bad his sister treated us and I always felt it was because of our skin. She would make us sit outside on the porch when we would visit my grandfather. They would always argue about how she treated us. This video just make me realize what that was really about. Born and raised in Miami and I can whole heartily tell you that your feelings are not wrong. I have experienced it my whole life. My husband was fired from his job because of their hate for not only blacks, but ESPECIALLY Haitians, which he is. He was a program director for the ymca and in charge of 5 sites in a predominantly Cuban area. This was a promotion he had just received. The employees he was now in charge of were all older Cuban women. They were suppose to hire an assistant director to manage the site when he had to go to mandatory daily meetings at their corporate office. They refused. The ladies at the sites wouldn’t speak to him in English and then would complain to corporate that he wasn’t giving them proper directions. An incident happened at one of the sites where an employee and a parent got into a near physical altercation and when my husband arrived he defused the situation. They turned around and called corporate and told them that it was my husbands fault. The whole staff! Mind you my husband was at the corporate office when the incident took place. And they turned around and fired him. He had a wrongful termination suit he could file but he was so hurt and upset that he didn’t want anything to do with them. I felt terrible Because I pushed him to take the promotion even though he had hesitation because it’s a Cuban area and he knew there would be issues. Go to any grocery store in Hialeah or coral gables. They only speak Spanish and literally won’t even bother speaking to you in stores. They are honestly the reason we moved from Miami. They are nothing but Cubans who have come over and think they’re white. They vote republican and are super nasty. Look at the incident recently that went viral with the Spanish employee calling the lady a nigger. They have too much power in Miami for their attitudes to ever change.

I just saw this post and found it very fitting to what's going on now. To your question, the answer is yes. I used to travel often to Miami & South Beach during the early post Gianni Versace days. Most Cubans, Puerto Ricans, etc, are not only prejudice towards African Americans, but to their own darker skinned kinfolks UNLESS they think you are rich or well-connected. Then, they will eat up you with sugar on top with over the top kindness. I went to Miami the week after Memorial Day, I was lounging poolside and started a conversation with one of the Cuban hotel workers. She expressed how they all were glad "those" people from last week had finally cleared out. This was a very nice hotel & "those" people had paid good money to enjoy the amenities at that hotel. That's the main reason why I don't vacation to popular places, especially during major events or holidays. Miami has evolved over time, it is now very catering to high end real estate developers & people that can actually afford to buy those million dollar properties. Me personally, I could not live in Miami. It was not built for us. Most recently, I got into an online debate with a "light, almost white" Puerto Rican about racism. He told me that racism is a state of mind. If you don't look for it, you won't find it. My response was, Chile bye!

Suddenly you're "playing the race card" when theses same people have no problems doing it on you. Mexicans view them as thieves who stole their land which they now shamelessly call Southeastern USA but which was once a part of Mexico. The rest of Latin America, with the exception of Puerto Ricans, view them as bullies who are constantly meddling in Latin American internal affairs by supporting ruthless dictators or arming revolutionaries to overthrow Latin American governments. Cubans, in particular and Venezuelans, strongly dislike Anglo Americans because of their constant bullying tactics. Cubans have been suffering the consequences of their embargo for more than 50 years and bitterly resent their occupation of Guantanamo. In fact, Castro was eager to start a nuclear war via Russia because of his hatred for them.

If you are a black person from Colombia, Cuba...you are seen the same way as a black person from the US or Jamaica. The language spoken does not change anything. If you are a brown person speaking spanish, you are not a latin not a spanish person. You are either a Colombian, Mexican..

It's a historical thing where the Spaniards and Portuguese created a "Brown" class in order to create a false hierarchy. (I didn't realise it's impact on my own family until I learned about this.) They gave these group a sense that they weren't like the slaves but they weren't like the full blooded Spaniards or Portuguese. They were indoctrinated into seeing blacks as less than, but they KNOW they aren't white so they cleave to the "master" in hopes that he won't notice they are brown. I hope this is making sense. It's the caste system which exists in black culture on steroids. Like Eva Longoria's family used to cus her cos she was too dark - ie letting the world know that they have black ancestry. It's a big mess.
+funkydineva A bit of history for you.
I could explain further but it's draining! They have to treat black people bad to maintain their perception of their place in the world. But whites will NEVER accept them. They just keep hoping.

One of our own gets unjustly fired and we talk behind their back "well she shouldn't of..." "well he had it coming with..." No y'all! That's why Hispanics are on the upwardly mobile because just like Jews and Asians they protect eachother, they hire eachother, they promote eachother, they help eachother to the fullest but we want to be the only one to come up and we want to cling on to other groups and get mad when they shake us off as not one of their own, because we not but we get mad nonetheless. We need to band with our own people and stop trying so f*cking hard to "include" Hispanics. Hispanics are on a path back to whiteness and that's fine. But we wasting time trying to have them come over to our side when that's never going to happen. We need to let them be and focus on us.

Blacks have been told to assimilate with white America, not knowing their own heritage, language, ethnicity. Now they bring the workd in and tell you to accept or get with the "PROGRAM".
When you fibd out who you really are. Then it will all make sense.
As for blacks mixing in with others. I'll say this.. Black women are looking for security. Something alot of black men don't have.. White and Latino women aren't looking for that when they are with thise same black men.. The war on drugs played a major role..To me they have played my people's intelligence like a piano.. The women wanna be accepted by white America as intelligent and half the men are turning out gay do to hormone meds from young and being yold it's ok..But this generation will not understand.. You’re not alone. I know exactly what you’re talking about. I’ve lived in Cuba and Miami. Afrocubans and afrolatinos as a whole have it rough both in our home countries and in America. I’ve had white Cubans try and downplay my heritage and treat me like I’m less than them and they just left Havana two weeks ago! Most white Cubans in south Florida are the descendants of those who fled Cuba right before the revolution because it threatened their wealth. They send money back to Cuba for their families and that’s created a bit of a divide. So when those family members join them in Miami, they already have this preconceived notion that they are better than black people (African Americans and Afrolatinos). The problem runs deep and needs to be addressed within our community!

Now there are also Afro-Cuban but we not talking about them when it comes to discrimination because very rarely do they resort to that type of shit some do but most dont. I’ve seen it growing up too, I’m Bahamian but grew up in the states and it’s so true it’s sad. I especially experienced this while at work. I work for an insurance company. Every time I call a Spanish speaking customer they immediately ask for an interpreter as soon as the conversation gets under way. Now mind you they spoke perfect English when they first answered but refuse to talk to me in English. Then towards the end they always go back to speaking English like they didn’t need an interpreter to begin with.

Growing up in an Afro Cuban household in Miami, I will confirm that yes white Cubans DO have a problem with black people (black Cubans too) Also having white Cuban friends growing up, it was always an issue with parents, and their disdain or disapproval was only eased over when you speak Spanish. But even then That only goes but so far 🙄I don’t know what the problem or hate is rooted in, but the mentality is very dated. They don’t want their kids dating black folks and we definitely are seen as lazy and beneath them. Surface level answer but your feelings aren’t invalid.

One obstacle is that the offspring of racially mixed marriages usually predominantly resemble the person with the dominant genes. Grandparents want to physically see themselves in grandkids. But that genetic dominance usually makes that difficult. It is also difficult for black grandparents whose kids marry a white person if the kids look North European as sometimes happens. I have read and heard African Americans expressing that feeling numerous times on RUclips and in writing. I resemble led my mother who looked predominantly Taina and my father was constantly complaining about it. He wanted a child that resembled him at least in some significantly obvious way.

Im Cuban and to me your just a compatriota 🇨🇺 we Cubans owe out independence to black Cubans who made the majority of the Cuban liberation army against Spain. Manuel Céspedes freed his slaves and called them citizens which incited out first war against the racist Spanish empire. Our general Antonio maceo was a black man. Jose marti our version of Goerge Washington spoke against racism and believed that Cuba would be a country with racial harmony with both whites and blacks living together in peace. But the racism TRULY stems from our Spanish ancestors most Cubans today both black and white mix with each other a lot now. And back in the day parents would fight the shit out of they’re kids who were in love with black men because they stereotyped them as bad people and “criminals” our racism had been embedded in out community due to Spanish caste system. And even after independence that Spanish racial mentality still exists, I guess Jose marti was truly right about the Spaniards all along.

I have had issues with Enterprise in the past even though I had an email from the Regional director. The customer service representative in the local store still tried to deny my rental after I showed it to her. She wanted to validate the information herself by waiting on the Regional director to response to her text message. She was so upset when he told her that I could rent the vehicle and had the most disgusted look on her face when she read his text. He probably got on her for questioning an email that was sent by him. The most recent issue with Enterprise was they didn’t have a vehicle when I went to pick up because they were waiting for renters to return. I was late for my meeting in another city due to the problem. I have modified my rental for pickup next month to pick up a day in advance to ensure I will leave on time. Now my employer or me may have to pay for additional day because the inventory management is inadequate, so it seems.
Another issue I had with Enterprise in Los Angeles had me HOT. My friend had never seen me respond that way. I was a long way from home and the woman didn’t want to rent to me and I had prepaid for the car via online through a discount program offered by my credit union. She told me that a major credit card was required and at that time I didn’t have one and I called that specific location before I secured the rental so I wouldn’t have any problems at pick up. All I was required to show was a plan ticket and the confirmation. I don’t know the ethnicity of the woman but she wasn’t black.
I cringe when I have to see the racial bias during business transactions and it is hurtful to be prejudged based on skin color.
I hope your body heals 200% better after being involved in a car accident.

No that was definitely racial. Ask yourself would he run a white/Spanish person’s card without confirming with them first? He even went over his black coworker’s heads.

It's not just Cubans in Miami. Latin Americans have this similar complex towards black people in general. I see this in interactions with Venezuelans, Colombians, and Puerto Ricans here in Orlando. Hell, Even Brazilians. You see it in the workplace. They're very tribal and stick to themselves. You have to remember that they come from countries with these colorist attitudes, and they refuse to adopt American norms when it comes to race relations.
Also, don't think for a minute that Afro Latinos are any different. They'll bleach their skin to keep the Latino identity before seeking any kinship with fellow black people.

Ok I have to admit this my father who is Cuban had a child with a Austrian woman and he is so proud she came out white he is from Cuba and lives in Miami it a strong color bias within the Latin community and they even have a song about it growing up about how the black man wants the Spanish girl don’t give him you’re sugar pit bull remade it it’s called the anthem it’s deep rooted within our community to stay away from black men and there basically seen as lower and not good enough and it’s horrible so when a Cuban male just like white males see you being successful with big checks nice rentals it kills there little racist misogynistic ego and they probably don’t believe you are legit and a criminal but you are beautiful inside and out you’re talented you built you’re platform alone they are madddd

Dineva. Yesterday I posted a video on my channel entitled “The Dark Truth about The Dominican Republic vs. Haiti”. As a Dominican Woman myself, I vouch for all of this. The truth doesn’t stop with just The DR, it definitely went on to Cuba, Puerto Rico and etc. So it’s no wonder why the condescending doesn’t stop with just Haitians. I hope you watch the video. It’s very informative

I’m a traveling Respiratory Therapist and been in Miami for 4 months now. I’m Black Native American 🇺🇸 ok. I think we need an area in Miami for us to feel comfortable because really this is America I think they should know English too. Some act they don’t speak English but do when a Spanish person comes in and speak English and Spanish. I don’t care. I just make my money and be kind and ignore that behavior. I stick with Jamaican and Haitians they always say they feel my pain. They say just get your money and let it be. I do be at peace now. I used to get offended but I’m saving lives rather they like me or not!

You don't have to give a fuck about these people.
When they step outside of Miami the game is over.!!!
