That was a gorgeous vessel as she should be being a Hans.
That would have been a real joy to live aboard and sail, just stunning, fast and comfortable.
    What more could you want?
Fair winds, following sails, safe travels and God Bless...

You said something profound that really hit me: "just do it"!
I'm 50 now so, basically, I'm half dead. Therefore I want to sell my home and get a boat big enough to live in full-time, preferably a 48'. I've narrowed it down to either a Rassy, IP, HC or an Amel. There's a really , really nice, 1988 HC trawler for sale that is absolutely gorgeous, but the price is a bit out of my reach right now. I could try to take out a loan, but I want to avoid that as much as possible. Any tips Sir Tim?

I watch a number of RUclips sailing channels. I follow Sam Holmes and Wind Hippy, for the smaller boats (less than 30 ft), How To Sail Oceans and Magic Carpet, for mid-size boats (30 to 40 ft), and Adventures of an Old Sea Dog, and Sailing Wisdom, for larger boats (40 ft plus). I think I have learned more about yacht design by watching these channels (and yours) than I have even going to school to study it.
I have learned that Beam says more about a boat's true size than length.
I have learned that IOR influenced cruising boats make damned decent live aboard boats, as they are sufficiently seaworthy, they have a decent amount of on board space, and they have the performance corner pretty much nailed.
Their only drawback is their huge jib. I'd be inclined to split it up into two smaller ones. But I have seen evidence that a sufficiently durable roller-furling jib can work quite well (just don't skimp on it).

Enjoyed the video. Regarding the "checklist" the first question any sailor in Europe will ask is "what is your program?" You allude to your program of sailing the Caribbean and living aboard, but for anyone else, that is the question they need to answer. Do they just want to kick around their local waters? Do they want to do the Med? Cross oceans? First define the program and then, as you say, just buy something that can get you started on your program (provided you can convince your partner😞).

Good episode, but not one of your best. You seem to have occasionally confused the two different 43 footers built by Hans Christian. There’s the Hans Christian 43, all of which had canoe sterns, and there’s the Christina 43, which all had a transom. Same builder, totally different boats. An easy mistake but you usually research things better.

i asked this question once, a year or 2 ago. thinking you might have taken it wrong. thinking i might have asked it wrong.
what do you call "fast" and why?
so many boats are listed for sale as "fast" and of the many i have inquired about, when asked, refused a straight, or even semi straight response..
the most recent boat i bought, didn't need explanation, i didn't even need to ask..... records and published documentation are self explanatory.
but. i am looking for a second boat, and I do want fast. fast, safe, and somewhat comfortable, budget minded ocean crossing machine.
so, what is fast, in your mind? and why? please help define this.
    thank you kindly sir.
    (I ought to email you......)

    • @toddwever4916
      @toddwever4916 Год назад

I know I'm not Tim, but fast is not an easy answer. Mono hull fast is slow compared to a catamaran. Length has alot to do with speed as well. A fast 22 footer is slow compared to a 90 footer. Generally speaking light displacement is faster than heavy displacement. The Hans Christian Christina that Tim was on will do 8.5 knots and that's pretty fast for a heavy displacement cruiser. Hope this answers some of your questions.
