Saw this film with my father in a theatre 1978 (My Pop was Intel Crypto) I was 14. I found it tragic, Painful to watch at times and in hindsight a very real portrayal of the Military mentality. Four years later I enlisted and served ten years and the movie makes more sense to me now then when I watched it as a 14 year old. This film never gets old to me, It's exposure to the non veteran of the value that the trooper really has in the eyes of the command is priceless. We were nothing to them

I agree, the director actually found him in the phillipines fishing with his phillipino wife, getting drunk. Saw his tattoos, found out he was a vet and former DI, and asked to be an actor in the film, the rest is History!

It's Diego. I was at Parris Island. In fact, during the scene where the D.I gets on the bus to "say hello," he tells them 'You are now aboard the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California. When you left you were under your mother's care. You are now under my care. You will not eat, sleep, blow your nose or scratch your ass unless someone tells you to do so."

S.T. L. Right you are. In a way, San Diego seems more difficult than Parris Island. At P.I., you're isolated and just don't see anything civilian for months. At MCRD, you see those damned freedom birds everyday.

Scott Adkins The DI always yelled at us for "EYEBALLING MY AIRPLANES!". We had a doofus who decided to leave during Boot Camp. He went straight to the San Diego International Airport next door. Stupid idiot was still in his cammies (they take away your civilian clothes when you get to MCRD). The MPs grabbed him as he was eating breakfast in the airport. Our DI thrashed us damn near all day because of that moron.

Women aren't getting let in combat arms in the US military. Compared to many other militaries around the world, American women can't do much at all. Various European countries, Canada, NZ and soon Australia will have women in the infantry and armor. The British let women in field artillery and combat engineering. It hasn't done them any harm, all these countries have deployed on operations too.
The US is too conservative to go down the same route, and it would be expensive to implement.

The actor playing the series drill instructor does gives a convincing portrayal, but most likely was never a real marine. In the marines, its not "the ground," it's "the deck," or, in this case, "my deck".

Haven't seen this movie in ages. What is that DI's name? He was a real DI way back when.
He kind of went Hollywood there for awhile after this flick unfortunately he was type cast for these exact same roles. With that demeanor can you blame them?
He even came out with an alarm clock that yelled out profanities in his voice like 'get the fuck up maggot you worthless piece of shit'.
Almost bought one but didn't think the wife would've approved.

I remember this movie when it came out. That's the way boot camp should be. Now days, if you swear at a Private, he might cry to his congressman, "He hurt my feelings! We have a military that's filled with a bunch of sissies. And they are a direct reflection of what our nation has become over the years. That's why other countries piss on us whenever they can. They know we're not really gonna do anything about it. Heaven knows, we don't want to OFFEND anyone. Pathetic.

@Brutle1111 I never served but my dad did and I grew up around every race and nationality of spouses and kids of servicemen. Teachers at school too and staff in the Exchange/Commisary bowling alley etc. Small towns with their homogenous makeup (only "americans" and no "foreigners") don't appeal to me.
And yes my dad was stationed in the P.I. twice married a Filipina after my Japanese mom passed away.

@briank383 Watch just a few seconds after the privates start coming out of the huts; you'll clearly see some kid with skeeter wings (a single stripe) yelling at one of them. Isn't that an E-2? Even if he's an E-3, I thought you had to be at LEAST an E-5 to be a D.I.?

@opfor97 That's true. But, ask yourself one question. Could the clerks and jerks of today's army hold off the German Army, the Waffen SS like the clerks and jerks of WW2 did during the Bulge? Back then it was was every swingin dick was a rifleman first and foremost.

Not sure when it started. They did it in the 80's. You had firing lanes. Probably 20 yards from a guy firing down the lane as you ran for cover, four second rush. Then you opened up down the lane as he ran for cover.

As a son of a WWII vet, I can relate to this scene. Being in the L.A. County Sheriff's academy back in 1979 is reminiscent of those times. Back then, the academy was hard ass shit talking and High stress to make it through. Today these kids are soft and will break down and cry if the academy was like this. After 44 years ( Sgt. II) and retirement brings me fond memories of these times.
