This is the best looking watch ever made in my opinion. It's a close race with the vintage Rolex Big Crown, but this takes the cake. It's impossible to explain to a young person who wears smart watches or no watch at all these days how influential this watch was in the 90's and 00's. Every guy wanted one. Watches were a statement and status piece, and this was the king of the mainstream. Glad to see it's more out of the limelight now. Makes it more appreciated.

Totally agree! I remember seeing this watch in Goldeneye and looking at it in the boutique window as a kid and thinking one day I'll own one. And now I do!

Wish the current gen wasn't 42m. It may only be up 1mm but for some reason looks and feels so much bigger on the wrist

Biggest difference is the new one with 14mm thick vs only 11mm for this one.

These just don’t age. They have kept so much better than the Bond movies themselves.

My two grandpas have died before I was even one year old lmao, it is what it is... Just found out by my mom that her dad had a Seiko, I don't know what model it was, but I wish I had it, something sentimental, a "piece" from him.

This watch is growing a lot of hype in 2024, especially the 36mm midsize with the blue Bezel.
They go live on a website & in most cases sold a few hours later.
Grab yourself one now before price sky rockets

Sometimes I wonder why they gave Brosnan the quartz in Goldeneye, but for all his other Bond movies after Goldeneye, they changed it to the automatic one.

Goldeneye was a decision made independently by the costume designer because they knew some ex-Royal Navy men, and anecdotally they wore Omegas when they were in, not Rolex. Quartz also makes more sense for someone doing Bond's job. Omega had nothing to do with that specific movie.
For the later movies, I believe Omega paid to keep Bond using their product, and the autos were more expensive than the quartz models. Therefore they likely provided the automatic chronometer versions to try and drive sales of those models.
Funnily enough, history has gone to show that the Omega Cal. 1538 in these is practically bomb-proof, and even 25 years later are outstandingly reliable, even for quartz movements. It's not hard to find accounts of them running flawlessly without servicing since being bought new in the 1990s. That costume designer on Goldeneye 100% made the right call it seems to me.
Bond influence or not, I've even seen some of the armed police around London wearing obviously well-used Seamaster 300Ms more often that you'd think!

@@NeonMako Fun fact. Sean Connery as James Bond was wearing Rolex watches! Indeed my favorite Bond actor Pierce Brosnan was the first to wear an Omega Seamaster. 😇

Quartz makes more sense for Bond, its tougher and more accurate than an automatic.

It was price, and ignorance at auto V quartz that did it for me. Would I buy a quartz now, no, but that is a tad snobbish of me. Still a fantastic looking, timeless, accurate, class watch!

Thanks for this discussion piece, really enjoyed the format. I’m in Glasgow, so nice to hear some Scottish voices for a change. Added the SMP 300 Co-Axial to my collection in 2019. Much prefer the classic styling of this watch to the current iteration, which is slightly too big for my wrist. The bezel font also seemed a bit ‘cartoonish’ on the counter top alongside the contemporary Submariner.

Kicking myself because I saw one a long time ago in a jewellers in Newcastle. I wanted it so bad but it wasn’t long after I had spent £500 on a Raymond Weil half price in a sale on 0% so I did not want any more debt. The right decision at the time but DRAT & DOUBLE DRAT Mutley!
